I wish, when they were mentioning John Hughes portraying Brian's Dad, that they would have mentioned that Anthony Michael Hall's real life Mom & little sister play the same roles in the movie. Probably why she was so good at scolding him and of course, his little sister throwing a dig at him just by saying "yeah" was such the stuff of siblings.

While the stereotypes spoke to our generations (X and Millennial), a remake (if done with the same sort of attention to detail) could resonate with Gen Z and Alpha. We just wouldn't be the target audience, and that's perfectly okay. Not every remake is made with our gen in mind, and we gotta accept that.

I love this movie, it has so many iconic details. Having Carl the Janitor be the man of the year back in 1969 is a clever detail, and makes you wonder how he got into his current position.
@TheoRae8289

My first high school principal became a car salesman because the stress at the school was literally killing him. So health could have been a factor. Mental health also could have been a factor. A janitor I'd known from 4th grade through the end of high school (because he transferred locations) was a golden gloves boxer and a brilliant man who quite literally lived in the boiler room because something in his mental health prevented him from maintaining a stable home. He stayed with his sister during school breaks. I had a home life that bordered on being like Bender's, and Steve was one of the few adults in my life who looked out for me growing up.

Re: Bender not having a lunch: I noticed that one real quick because I had to go through Summer School between 8th and 9th grade without lunches. Thankfully that misadventure was only two weeks, but it still sucked and further fed into a bunch of disordered eating that I still deal with 20-odd years later. Allison's first "line": I swear you can see the moment Andrew crushes on her (or that it becomes apparent that he liked her) in response to that "HAH!" She definitely didn't need that makeover, because Andrew already liked her from the moment she balked at Claire. (Edit - I gagged a little because I didn't even notice him cleaning his teeth with that brow brush) The scene of Vernon giving all those extra Saturdays to Bender: Look in Bender's eyes during that scene. He actually *does* want those Saturdays because they get him away from his family. Like pay close attention to when Vernon asks if he wants another day. There's a beat of silence and you can see sort of a mounting desperation, almost panic, in his eyes before he says yes. There was a cry for help there that Vernon was too far up his own ass to see because he didn't give a shit about his students. Judd Nelson knocked that role out of the park.
@brentage5000
@brentage5000 2 жыл бұрын
There's also the little hesitation before that one "Yes!" Once you know Bender's backstory, you can tell he's not seeing Vernon in that moment at all but is back at home with his real dad shouting and threatening him. His voice in that moment seems so close to tears that if Vernon had leaned in even a little, Bender would have either cringed and curled up defensively or actively struck Vernon, either of which would create all new problems.

I fell in love with Judd Nelson when I watched him in his role as Bender. A little trivia, Judd Nelson was the oldest member of The Breakfast Club. He was 24 at the time. It was obvious that Bender was from the wrong side of the tracks. His Father must have started abusing him at a very early age because when Vernon started his rant in the closet, Bender fell back in terror. Interestingly enough, when Vernon said, "Who are they going to believe if you hit me", the other kids were witnesses to Vernon's abuse & Bender is most like still a minor, even though he looks older because he shows a tough exterior. Although Allison looked like a bag lady, her choice of lunch items was something only a person with means would waste their money on. Both Allison & Bender preferred to be in school, in detention, on the weekend, because it was a better alternative to being at home. Brian probably enjoyed this detention also because it was probably the first time he talked with schoolmates about something other than their studies. I think Andrew liked Allison just because she was different than all the other girls he hung around with. He asked Claire if she was going to Stubby's party but didn't even expect the others to be invited. Only Claire was in his click so Allison intrigued Andrew but he couldn't see her face. It was also obvious that while Vernon had a position of authority at the HS, no one, including the Teachers, respected him. He, like Bender's Father, was an insecure bully. The only differences between them were a college degree & the ability to bully multiple people vs the Wife & the Son. I always wonder & would like to think that they did indeed stay friends. I missed the multiple uses of Shermer HS, the Library rules, Andrews bird, & Claire's brush. For the latter one, I thought Claire probably had multiple brushes in her purse.

I agree with you, Andrew gave her that interested smile the moment she said "Ha!". He was instantly into her. By the way, to ease your mind, albiet a year after your post (love the interweb!) There is a deleted scene, where Carl the Janitor tells all of the kids how he went from being Man of the Year to becoming the janitor at his old school. He then goes on to tell each one of the kids a horrible prediction about their own futures. It's a very revealing scene, but the overall feel of the movie would have been a little too dark if they had left it in.

I'm glad you guys are very perceptive regarding this movie. In 1985, when this came out, I was a youngster. Well, I was 25. I was very much into Howard Jones, tears for fears, Simple Minds, of course, Police, Yaz, the Fixx, and ABC, Pet Shop Boys, Bronski beat, and for a rest after too much partying, (X), Brian Eno....Music for Airports. And the Starck Club in Dallas Texas where I lived. I was a bit of a smartass, i would, many times, ask my boss, "Why"... Do we have to do. Whatever, this way. She did consider my way, a few times. Hope you enjoyed a bit of what that era was like for me. Thank you so much for letting me relive a bit of it... & That's just one facet of it. In every scene (and in the deleted scenes, found elsewhere in KZbin) in which Bender interacts with Carl, he shows a comfortable smile, definitely no antagonism there. At 10:23, the narration says that the janitor caught the VP snooping through students private records. I don't think so. They are clearly in the basement. Vernon is looking at a record jacket for someone named "Mr Tierney." Perhaps he was being sarcastic calling a student "mister," but I believe he was looking at staff records. That's why they were stored in the basement. Student records are kept in the administrative offices upstairs.

I never noticed the Library Rules. I noticed that a younger Carl was once in a school photograph with other male students wearing jackets and ties. Made me wonder, "what happened to him" that he grew up to be the school janitor? I noticed that John Bender didn't have a lunch. Perhaps if Andy had already warmed up to John, he would have offered John one of his sandwiches ('cause his Mom had packed either two of three of them).

Also the line on the locker “I don’t like Mondays” Is from a female school shooter in the 70s who opened fire on an elementary school she lived across the street from. She had a very rough life They asked her why she did it and she said: “I don’t like Mondays”

As an English teacher, naturally I notice that the letters on the wall designating the Librarian's Selections (or Librarians' Selections would be fine too) are missing an apostrophe (or the apostrophe is too small to be visible).

Carl the janitor catches Vernon going through the STAFF'S records, not the students'. Another interesting tidbit is that the woman and little girl who play Brian's mom and sister are in fact his real-life mom and sister.

Brian's flare gun did not destroy the elephant. The elephant he made did not work, so he failed class. He knew his parents would not accept that and he had a gun in his locker to possibly end his life. Apparently he could not get hold of a real gun so he had a flare gun which went off in his locker.

Most of those, the only way not to have noticed them was to not have watched the movie at all. But, yes, hardly anyone noticed "blow me" written in soft pencil on a sheet of paper shown for a fraction of a second because of being viewed from the distance of one's seat to the movie screen or because the graininess of video tape and low-res of '80s TVs made it literally invisible, i.e., you tend not to notice what's impossible to notice because you can't see it.

Not a bad list - I must have watched this movie 100 times in the 80's. Just to mention, you did miss a pretty good fact. You discuss Brian Johnson's father picking him up, the fact that he doesn't speak and the fact that it is a John Hughes cameo; it may also be interesting to some that the woman and young girl that play Brian Johnson's mother and sister in the beginning, are Anthony Michael Hall's actual mother and sister.

The door breaking symbolizes a pointless departure from reality. Glass doesn't shatter just because one person with a low voice yells. Except for the fact that high school students in the 1980s from such different cliques wouldn't have talked to each other at all, the rest of the movie is fairly realistic. At least it doesn't defy laws of physics.

I knew most of these things. As for the gun, it was not there to destroy the elephant lamp, it was there because Brian was in a very dark personal place where he felt he could not continue, but nobody today even still wants to talk about our young people choosing to make a permanent action to a temporary situation, and even the magic word can not be used as the algorithm will flag and remove my post.

Brief glimpse of Dr. Hashimoto's desk, and under his name it says 'Dr. R. Hashimoto, Guidance Counselor'. It is also implied Allison Reynolds sees him a lot. This is a nod to the film's production supervisor, Richard Hashimoto.
