With a talent and a personality too great to be contained in any one life or character, Dame Maggie filled a long career with sparkling humanity, crisp wit and a profound insight into the art of living the truth with beauty and goodness. Her humour revealed a deep humility, and her beauty changed but never faded. On to higher stages, Dame Maggie, your legacy on this world is secure. Applause as you exit into a great golden light💐💐💐💐

It's been days already, but I still am so very emotional at this, our very shared loss. I've loved her, always, but just am not prepared for this, still. It's not that she was a legend or a woman excelling in a business that retires you at 40. No, it was something else far more personal. Maggie Smith was the pinnacle of the individual. She, I'm realizing now, was a beacon in one's long, struggling journey to find out just who you are, indeed if you can know it by the time your time is up. I think she did. I will treasure her every performance and those I've yet to know and feel. I will tremble at her magnificent control over words and emotions. I will stand in awe with the heart-rendering reminder that she was once a little girl, a child like all of us were, who somehow, through the vagaries of existence and a pluck for the theatrical, became that Miss Jean Brodie long after that role was fulfilled and its awards presented, a teacher of such eloquence of inspiration and determination of love. God bless you, Dame Smith. You meant far more to me than I ever realized.

My work involves working with schoolchildren at times and every time I do, I channel Maggie Smith's Professor McGonagall to keep them in line. She played a Scotswoman so well that I believed she was Scottish for years, and I'm a native Scotsman myself. She is incomparable and we shall never see her like again. Rest in peace, Dame Maggie Smith.

Her depiction of the vain, deluded Jean Brodie was brilliant.

The line which has stayed with me since I first saw the movie was, in her upperclass Edinburgh accent, " "Well, for those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like" about one girl's interest in the Girl Guides. Her role in "The Lady in the Van" both enthralls and, as an old woman with homelessness hanging over my head, also terrifies me.

Dame Maggie Smith - the unforgettable Lady with a Thousand Faces, including those of Aunt Augusta, Constance Trentham, Daphne Castle, Miss Bowers, Miss Brodie, Miss Janet, Miss Shepherd, Lady Bracknell, Lady Hester, Lilly Fox, Lilly Wynn, Reverend Mother, Professor McGonagall … and, of course, the wonderfully acerbic Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, and the supremely irritating and prissy cousin Charlotte Bartlett. We will miss all of them!

To those here who only know Maggie from Potter or Downton, I urge you to look into the rest of her work - she was a phenomenal actress for decades (her first Oscar nomination was 59 _years_ ago!). It would be incredibly sad, and a huge disservice to Maggie’s talents, if she were only remembered for one or two franchise roles. When Sir Alec Guinness passed away in 2000 he was mainly celebrated for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, an enormous success that vexed him in life because his entire career prior to those films was eclipsed. He didn’t want Star Wars alone to be his legacy. Let’s not do the same to Maggie.
