It’s true that Tonya didn’t deserve to be treated the way she was and it’s also true that Nancy didn’t deserve to be attacked. Connie Chung said it best: “Nancy wasn’t all good and Tonya wasn’t all bad”. Dragging details of their personal lives into arguments doesn’t justify what happened to either, professionally.

IMO even if Tonya had actually taken the baton to Nancy's knee herself, the punishment she got and still gets, is WAY harsher than would have been warranted.

I feel like people give more positive comments to Tonya now than the 90s because our society has changed. Nancy and her hi-class good girl image fit with 90s society while Tonya with hard working and self-made money/status is more admired in this era. The informations we know still the same but people want to believe in difference things.

Nancy wasn’t “high class”. Her dad was a welder, and the family was blue collar. If you’re a Tonya fan I get it, but isn’t Tonya enough?... no need to diss Nancy to make Tonya look better. Tonya was a better skater but made some bad decisions and paid heavily. Nothing is going to take away her talent, or make her look better by trashing Nancy.

Actually, Kerrigan was a great skater. She was always praised for her technical merit. She was first and foremost an athlete, as she described herself in this video. Harding was also a great skater/athlete. The main difference between them is that Kerrigan was a dedicated skater, whereas Harding hated practicing and could get lazy. Had Harding applied herself, she wouldn't feel the need to take out the competition.
@queenemma5823
@queenemma5823 7 жыл бұрын
Both were very talented, but Harding had a raw talent that, had she honed by practicing more, would have made her one of the greatest of all time. Kerrigan, while talented in her own right, was more known for being very dedicated and hard-working. Was she talented as well? Yes, but she had to work more for it. Harding had a raw ability that comes once in a lifetime

It also happened the night before the championships to determine who would get to represent the US at the Olympics. No athlete likes to get hurt before the big game, as they say. When Kerrigan was screaming, it was more than just the attack itself. She was also thinking that she wouldn't be able to compete the following evening and her lifelong dream would be over. As it turned out, she couldn't compete, and Harding and Michelle Kwan ended up placing first and second, respectively, qualifying for the US team, as Kerrigan looked on tearfully. Later, Kerrigan replaced Kwan when she got better and felt secure enough, but there were some that thought she should have replaced Harding, instead.

Nancy Kerrigan is a despicable person. She was having an affair with her coach and he left his family and 2 children for her. And the woman still can't land a triple. Its sad what happened to Tonya. Her whole life seems to be a shakespear tragedy. She might've known about it, but I really doubt she helped plan it or was involved to that extent. If someone treated you like crap and looked down their nose at you because you had to make your own outfits, would you really go out of your way to say hey watch your back? I'm not so sure that I would. I would probably tell the men planning it no, don't do that and then never mention it again. Because what would telling the authorities do? get your husband in trouble. Its all kind of fucked up. If you also had your mind focused on skating who is going to borrow that kind of trouble?

Emily Lorenz Amy Adams is a versatile actress but she is in her 40s and cannot portray someone who is a young and troubled figure skater realistically. Margot is 27 and closer to Tonya’s age (24) when she competed at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer.

Ms Rana I’m just stating what the film directors and producers probably had in time. Maggie was one of the producers so she definitely had more influence in the casting (Reese Witherspoon did the same thing and almost weaseled her way into the movie “Gone Girl” but the director decided to cast Rosamund Pike as the lead girl instead). Sadly, older actresses get less opportunities and screen time once they reach a certain age and if they do, they usually get cast in some forgettable mother and grandmother roles (Meryl Streep is one exception). Maggie Gyllenhaal once said that a Hollywood producer considered the 37-year-old her to be “too old” to star as a 55-year-old actor’s romantic interest on screen. It’s baffling.

I remember watching these events. Tonya was a great skater, a powerhouse. Kerrigan was a great skater, but I didn't feel she had any charisma in her performance. And you could tell she was pissed that she came in 2nd at the Olympics. She didn't even try to hide it. I remember things for Tonya just crumbled, at one point she approached the judges crying and showing them her skating boot . . . something had gone wrong. I think after everything, the strain just got to both women and neither brought their A game. I agree with Animotost, Amy Adams would've been great, had she been the right age, to play Harding. Margot Robbie makes her look insane. Like she's portraying perhaps what Harding looks like on the inside . . .
@asiacheetah1010
@asiacheetah1010 7 жыл бұрын
Tonya's boot strap had broken shortly before she was due to take the ice and she had to redo it right before. It broke her concentration so she popped a jump. She approached the judge mid-skate to explain the situation and was allowed time to adjust the laces. She couldn't reskate the whole program though so she finished the SP low in the ranking. In those Olympics, you had to be top 4 in order to have a hope of finishing with Gold. Nancy said some not nice remarks while waiting for the awards ceremony about the Gold medal winner Oksana. It might be a case of poor sportsmanship or heightened emotion, but since the media painted her as a media darling, the comments were the more shocking and took the gleam off her.
@glazgogirl
@glazgogirl 7 жыл бұрын
Indeed. She had such an acceptable, inspirational personal story: All-American girl, blind mom . . . Tonya was trailer trash--in the eyes of the media and public. I think Kerrigan felt like she was owed the gold. That's what it seems when you watch these clips where she's being interviewed and showing the guy the medals people sent her after she got the silver at the Olympics. Even if Harding hadn't had the problems with her skate and earned the gold, I feel they would have found a way to not let her have it. Craziness.
@RaymondHng
@RaymondHng 6 жыл бұрын
Kerrigan did bring her A game. But Baiul won by the slimmest margin possible, 0.1 point by one judge from the former Iron Curtain country of East Germany. Harding, on the other hand, was not able to land a triple axel again in competition after 1991. Her competitive results started to decline after that.

Yeah, she looks like a snooty princess, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't feel bad for her. The reason she reacted so violently is because she was afraid her olympic dream and her skating would be taken away from her. That and the shock and the pain of it all. You missed the fact that Tonya was (prior to incident) a technically more proficient skater being the first American female to ever land a triple axel in competition and still one of only about 19 women in the world to do so (2021). In fact in the film they had to recreate it using special effects because the professionals hired couldn't do one. It involves a forward take off without using the toe pick, three and a half rotations in about one second and landing on the other foot with a force of over 400 pounds. No one will ever take that away from her.

The way I see it, Tonya's punishment was way too harsh. Even if she did know beforehand about what was supposed to happen, I would be scared to tell anyone as well, her husband was ABUSIVE. Tonya said there were multiple occasions where she feared for her life because of him. The fact that her ex-husband and bodyguard got 18 months and she had to go on probation, pay a lot of money, AND couldn't compete anymore is absolutely ridiculous.

Forest Nymph Confessions thanks for proving my point, you literally justified the assult because “it’s not that bad anyways”. First of all, she knew about the attack before it happened, just because she didnt hire the guy herself doesn’t make her not guilty when she knowingly failed to report it to authority. Second of all, if my whole life and career depends on my legs, I’m gonna go crazy when some guy start beating the shit out of them as well. And like Tonya didn’t cry and go all dramatic over a pair of skates not tying properly before. She even stopped competing and cried to the judges about the skates being uncomfortable. Nancy obviously had more dedication for competing with an injured leg, and won fair and square.

Clearly this video was not done by a figure skater.Here's what you NEED to know: 1. Michelle Kwan was ALWAYS the alternate - as there is ALWAYS an alternate. In 1994 we had 2 spots on the Olympic team, the alternate is always sent over as a precaution.2. Figure skating was the MOST WATCHED sporting event that year.3. Kerrigan STILL LOST the gold medal to Oksana Baiul. Tonya came in 6th I think.....4. The first National Senior appearance for Michelle Kwan - and the beginning of her dynasty.5. Everyone knew Tonya was involved.6. Nancy was a bitch. Still is.

So I have many different opinions of my own... First off, I want to hear more from Jeff Gooley and his side of it all. I’m sick of hearing everyone defending Harding because of this brand new movie coming out, which alone was tweaked enough by Hollywood. So of course with such a fan base, everyone now sides with Tonya because she’s played by the beloved Margot Robbie. Robbie herself claims that she is not 100% defending Tonya like false sources have said. She says she has to believe in her character in order to portray her correctly. Which she seems to have done a fantastic job if I may add. But of course now people are calling out Kerrigan for being a cry baby, when not many of you probably realize how serious this was. Stop looking at it as “This whole thing is over just some bruising.” It’s much more than that. The intent of the crime was to break her leg. It doesn’t matter what was carried out successfully, a man was paid to take out the competition. That is a fact no matter how you want to look at it. Secondly, this incident can be overlooked and forgotten by most people who hear about it, but for both Nancy and Tonya this will live in until the day they die. Kerrigan could be traumatized for life. While everyone is taking the time to call her a whining brat, maybe you should stop to consider that Kerrigan could suffer from minor Post Traumatic Stress or even nightmares. Everyone needs to take a step back and look at the big picture before you start calling names. And also before you start pointing fingers. Now this being said, I am not 100% on Kerrigan’s side of it all. I think I need to learn more about this through reliable source rather than this new film. But from my perspective, I’m still trying to understand why Jeff would even want or plan out this attack without Tonya egging him on about it or implying something along the lines. It just seems to unlikely for him to possibly think, “Hey let me take out the competition for my newly wed wife without telling her. It’ll be my little anniversary gift.” Really? I mean come on, it just sounds ridiculous unless he really was psychotic. And at the same time I just feel so bad for Tonya. If she really was innocent to this whole mess than it’s sad to think of how her whole career, her dream was taken from her just like that. And if she is guilty, it also seems that her mother is another to blame. Her verbal and physical abuse is probably what drove her mad in the first place. She pushed her so much, she just broke her. So I guess I have many opposing thoughts, obviously, when it comes to this conspiracy. Like I said before, I just think we need more research and facts before we all jump to further conclusions. And at the end of the day, you never know what really happened behind closed doors.

I agree, I guess we'll never really know. I think it's possible though that the ex was at fault. I mean, if he really was abusive, he could've planned this as revenge, or a sick way of "showing his love" to Tonya. Maybe Tonya knew and was too scared to act, or she was behind it all. I guess its just in the past now.

To show you Kerrigan's true side, Oksana Baiul had won the gold. Kerrigan got silver and Chen Lu got the bronze. While Kerrigan and Lu waited over 20 minutes for Olympic officials to find a copy of the Ukrainian national anthem, someone mistakenly told Kerrigan the delay in the presentation was because Baiul had cried off her make-up and was getting it retouched. Kerrigan, with obvious frustration, was caught on-camera saying "Oh, come on. So she's going to get out here and cry again. What's the difference?" That comment showed people that Kerrigan wasn't necessarily a "good girl" either.

The main reasons I'm willing to doubt that she had prior knowledge of the planned physical attack are 1) her confidence in her own skating and 2) how hard she had to work coming from her working class roots and how that all could have been (and was) so easily compromised with such a dumb plan. She didn’t deserve it & some people go too far. That being said, I think people are starting to see that Tonya is a person, too & had her struggles. I don’t consider myself to be a feminist, but legitimate feminists are taking another look at the treatment of women who were vilified back in the 90’s. Some of that vilification was deserved like in Tonya’s case & Monica Lewinsky, etc., but people were not looking at all of the circumstances surrounding these women. I hate to use the word victim, but a lot of these women were a victim of circumstance. Even Monica Lewinsky could be said to be a victim of a very powerful man. Yes, their relationship was “consensual,” but at the same time girls that age are not mature enough to understand completely what was going on or how it would affect them. Before the Tonya-Nancy scandal broke, people were bashing Lorena Bobbitt, completely ignoring the fact that she claimed to be a victim of abuse & marital rape. It even spilled over to Nancy Kerrigan who was a more obvious victim. I didn’t care for her attitude, but like her parents said, if she has been a man, it would’ve been overlooked which is true of Tonya, as well. If Tonya had been a male figure skater or just a rough around the edges athlete in most other sports, she wouldn’t have been criticized. If she had been a man playing in the NFL & bashed the first string quarterback’s knee so she’d get a chance to play, she probably would’ve been welcomed back with open arms when she finished her sentence. Sorry for the rant. I promise I don’t call myself a feminist, but I can see clearly enough to realize how it works. I was also a young woman, just a few years younger than Tonya & Nancy & a figure skating fan, so I read & saw practically everything the media did.

What was portrayed in the film was that Tonya in the beginning knew about the plan to mail death threat letters to Kerrigan, which was planned by Jeff's delusional friend Shawn with Jeff's funding. (Tonya herself was sent a death threat initially before the whole letter plan, which Jeff later on found out Shawn made the false death threat for some insane reason from his plan.) When things got serious with her preparation for the olympics, she detached herself from the planning, caring less about what they were doing so she could focus on practicing. When it came to the actual attacked, it was portrayed that Jeff and Tonya didn't know that Shawn had planned, along with hired hit man Derrick and his nephew Shane (in the clip), to bash Kerrigan's knee. So most likely, she knew something was up in relation to doing "something" to Kerrigan. Whether she really knew about only the letters or knew something about the attack since the accounts of the participants seem to change.The film gave off a vibe that Jeff's friend Shawn was insecure, delusional, and crazy and that he was the mastermind of the whole thing, but put the blame on Jeff and Tonya was caught in the crossfire and paid a great debt for it. Guilty by association.

Tanya has become a celebrity while Kerrigan is hardly mentioned, accept her association with this ugly incident.

Just because of the way Nancy grew up, or however her attitude was she did not deserve what happened to her period. I will never believe that Tonya did not know about what her HUSBAND was plotting to do for her career.

funny story- my nonna, a 70 year old italian immigrant, was visiting my family and i was watching the 60 minuets about the tonya case. she laughed and mimicked nancy’s crying/screaming. i kept trying to hold off my own laughter at what my nonna was doing.

I honestly believe that her husband (tonya's husband) wanted to distroy her and to do so,he had to hurt her rival in order to make people and police believe she did it ! Just to destroy her image and career.

Question: did the ex husband and bodyguard say it was Tonya who hired them? I'd after being arrested and convicted they never implicated her then why would they lie? Like it would've made them look better if they had admitted to not being the masterminds.

Nancy didn't deserve to get hurt but should be thankful it wasn't worse than it was. Tonya had a hard life and was judged for it which is sad since she was the best being the first American to hit the triple axle at competion. Jeff gooly was not a very good guy and Tonya would of been better off without him. Nancy knew what she was doing wearin the same outfit she was hurt in to mess with Tonya. There were no winners in this tragic situation except for figure skating which that year got ALOT more attention bc of this travesty

I don't get this response at all. A tough childhood excuses nothing. Nancy "knew what she was doing" and???? Why in the world should she believe that Tonya had no idea what HER ex-husband was going to do? Why shouldn't she wear what she wanted to?

It was her ex husband and bodyguard! How did she ended up getting punished the most? No matter what some might say...Tonya harding being someone who effortlessly pulled of multiple Triple axles will always be placed way ahead of Nancy in terms of talent. And if it was me, i would'nt go around accusing someone unless i have proof. its evident from all her interviews that Nancy was deliberately trash talking about Tonya even when she kept saying that she had no prior knowledge of the incident, which seems a bit suspicious...who knows if it wasnt nancy herself who planned the whole thing to get Tonya kicked out of the team? The fact that it was her ex-husband and bodyguard makes it more likely, easily two of the closest yet fairly easy to manipulate sources close to Tonya.

@@FireFist5000 SHE DIDN’T THOUGH THATS THE THING. While she said she overheard Shawn and Jeff, she didn’t know enough and even asked “What the hell are you two on about?” She only heard speaking of “taking someone down” which isn’t enough to tell the FBI prior to a possible assault. I do believe she is guilty of not telling the authorities immediately after it happened though.

Compare 4:22 tonyas casual warm up , perfection .. compared to 4:46 and keep watching.. Nancy's best shot at the same move after tons of trying and rehearsing.. Lol gee I wonder who deserved the gold medal!??? Fuck I would be bitter too if I were Tonya! She's so far more elegant and powerful And skilled it's undeniable. Nancy can't even keep her leg straight at 4:47 lol! Tonya does that so well just before her, again!! Nancy is riding these victim tears even now, but in reality she fucking sucked. The best medal she ever got was the sympathy vote cause she was useless compared to tonya at skating and all the video footage (and anyone can see it, people always knew Nancy kinda sucked she just looked the part!) proves it.
