Unfortunately Matthew Perry hasn’t been sober since 2001. The memoir discusses how he has relapsed 50-60 times over the years, the most recent being 2018 which left him in a coma. He just did a whole press tour about it, it’s a big detail to get incorrect.

Idk if was just me or what. I really didn’t see much to be considered “dark” here. All of this, issues with weight, getting hurt filming, problems dealing with fame, etc… actors have been dealing with since the start of Hollywood. Matthew Perry’s substance abuse issues was a dark thing to deal with because it could be a little more extreme than most drug abuse by actors. I am glad though that he managed to pull through and maintain a successful career.

They say he was “clean” since 2001, but I just read his book (riveting, heartbreaking) and I thought that he never really got clean. He had “2 year periods” (I think a couple) in which he was clean, but he always relapsed. He’s 52 in the book, and I believe he had a relapse maybe two years prior. Did I get that wrong? He was clean from ‘01 - ‘22, 21 years? No, the book is about how he finds it impossible to stay clean. He wasn’t writing about struggling with crippling addiction decades ago, it was a chronic and presiding thing.
