Bruce Willis was not an "unknown actor" going into Die Hard. Granted, his experience in film was limited, with his most notable credit being starring in the middling "Blind Date" with Kim Basinger. Die Hard did show he could be an action hero. But he was already pretty established in TV. having starred in Moonlighting, which was one of the hottest TV shows of the mid 80's.

But he was about to reach his prime. Willis could show his versatility.
@brentage5000Ай бұрын
@@Fixxer315 I think when Ms. Mojo says unknown, they don't mean _literally_ unknown. They just mean that the actor wasn't as well-established or famous as they would one day be. For instance, Brendan Fraser had popularly been in Encino Man and George Of The Jungle and Airheads in the 90s, but when The Mummy came out in 1999, that _really_ kicked his name into the spotlight.

Angelina Jolie's was VERY well known before the 2001 movie 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider'! Her breakout role was 'Girl, Interrupted,' for which she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress 1999. John Travolta wasn't unknown before 'Saturday Night Fever.' He got that role because he was already famous from 'Welcome Back, Kotter.' Johnny Depp's role in 'Nightmare on Elm Street' was very small. Most people still didn't know who he was until he starred in 'Edward Scissorhands' in 1990. As a side note, Pitt's role in 'Thelma & Louise' was also very small...but VERY MEMORABLE!

I think I'd argue that "Speed" for Bullock and "Die Hard" for Willis both did more making them into stars than "Pretty Woman" did for Julia. I think Julia was already on her way to stardom after "Steel Magnolias." But I don't think either Bullock or Willis become what they turned out to without those two movies. It's a tough call as "Pretty Woman" really did push Julia to the top, but I think she would have made it there anyway. I'm not sure the other two would have. I know that with Willis in particular, I always thought of him more as a comedy star than any action hero until "Die Hard" hit the theaters. As a teenage boy at the time, he immediately joined Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Gibson, as stars that would get me to a theater just by putting their name on the movie poster.

I saw Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, & Zack Galifinakis on TV before they started appearing in movies. Brad played a transfer student that Carol (Tracey Gold) Seaver became interested in when things weren't going well for her and her boyfriend, Bobby. Then he played a rock star that Ben (Jeremy Miller) Seaver idolized until he found out what a jerk the guy was. Sandra was in the last of the Bionic Woman & Six Million Dollar TV reunion movies that they did in the 90s. She played a young woman named Kate who had been paralyzed in an accident & given bionic powers. And Zack was a mortician in Tru Calling, a short lived series where Tru Davies (Eliza Dushku) would end up reliving a day to help people that had been brought into the morgue. Zack's character was one of the few people that knew what Tru was going through, besides her brother.

How in the world is matthew mcconaughey not on this list? He was such an unknown when he landed Dazed & Confused that he was originally just a background character. Then during filming Richard Linklater noticed how much charisma he had & how the rest of the cast constantly wanted to hang out with him off set. Therefore the movie was changed so that Waterson became a lead character over Pickford and his gf. The rest is history. This also influenced the way Linklater casted and produced future films like Everybody Wants Some! He took the main cast to a lake house for 3.5 weeks and basically had them become a team so it looked real on camera.

So damn likable. I remember the movie Wrestling Ernest Hemingway. Bullock had a small part as a waitress and it was like make her part bigger. The movie took place in S Florida and starred Robert Duvall (as a nice man Cuban(?) and his competition with his elderly friend portrayed by Richard Harris who may have been/is a womanizer. Lotsa good acting in a simple, small movie. Real good list by Ms Mojo. I was hoping to see Freida Pinta more after playing the love interest in Slumdog Millionaire. The moment I saw her: gorgeous. Appeared in Rise of the Planet of the Apes as James Franco's wife. I looked up Dav Patel and forgot he starred in the true story Hotel Mumbai (2018). Good movie. I need to see it again. I recall it is a bit shocking in its realism. Not for everyone, I'm sure because of the violence.

Difficult to make a selection. Nothing wrong with the people that you guys named here, but it all seems a bit arbitrary to me. People commenting here clearly demonstrate their inability to understand before responding. Yes, some of the actors here were known to some extent before their breakout roles. Yes, while they were known for their tv roles abd other minor movie roles, it was these that catapulted them to true stardom and sealed their fate to become movie stars. Two examples that are not mentioned here (to my surprise) are Morgan Freeman and Samuel L Jackson. Morgan Freeman did quite a few movies some if which he played significant characters, but it was his role in The Shawshank Redemption that reallt catapulted him into mainstream stardom. Like Morgan Freeman, Samuel L Jackson also appeared in many movies, like Coming to America and Jungle Fever that made him known but his breakout role that catapulted him to mainstream stardom was his role in Pulp Fiction.
