I met Ms Rogers back in 1972 i believe, she was still so pretty and very sweet to me! It was some kind of special thing going on in Huntington Beach where I lived, my daughter was 2 months old and Ms Rogers commented on how cute she was. My daughter is now 50! I wish I could remember what was going on, I was just going to the HB Mall to get baby clothes and happened to walk in the entry where they were setting up, I saw the sign, then her, she just looked so beautiful! it’s a nice memory to have.

Yes, I kind of like "Pick Yourself Up" myself. Believe it or not, I first heard that song on "Captain Kangaroo" when I was younger. It was sung by a chorus of men and was accompanied by film footage of birds learning to fly. But I never knew until years later that the tune was originally from an Astaire and Rogers movie.

And I love Ginger's dress in that number--so simple and it moved with as much grace as she did--a beautiful flow.

I’m 30 now and I’m so glad my aunt got me into watching the Fred and Finger movies when I was a little girl. I love the art deco glamour and sweeping drama and beauty of "Never Gonna Dance" in Swing Time and "Face the Music and Dance from Follow the Fleet and, of course "Cheek to Cheek" in Top Hat. But there's something fun and skillful and effortlessly stylish about them "dressed down" with Ginger in trousers...pants.....in "Bouncin' the Blues" in The Barkley's of Broadway, "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket" in Follow the Fleet, and "Isn't It a Lovely Day to Get Caught in the Rain in Top Hat.

Ginger Rogers played the Fairy Godmother to Leslie Ann Warren's Cinderella. I remember my mom telling me as a kid that the godmother was a HUGE star with a long career. Evidently, she was understating.
@labyrinthgirl172 жыл бұрын
Whenever I see these two, all I can think of is a quote my old dancer teacher said, "Sure he (Fred) was great, but don't forget that Ginger Rogers did everything he did…backwards and in high heels." I later learned that this wasn't something original she'd come up with, but a quote from a very, very old comic strip. xD

I agree on both of these! The dance contest features such intricate footwork, and "Pick Yourself Up" just makes me feel so wonderful. I love Ginger's expression in this too--a sort of bemusement mixed with growing exhilaration that this inept student actually can dance, and that dancing with him is such fun!

I’m surprised you missed the Yam song from Carefree. That dance is iconic and one of my fave dances of theirs bc it has a part where there are tables around them and in each one he puts his leg up and then swings her around and land perfectly on each chair. It looked extremely hard to do and amazed me as a kid and still now even at 30.

1. "I'll Be Hard to Handle" (Roberta) is one of the few numbers they did together - the only one? - where their tap-dancing was recorded "live"... which is why you can hear Astaire's impromptu vocal sounds as well. After that, the sound of their tapping would be dubbed later by Hermes Pan. 2. The omission of "Let's Face the Music and Dance" (Follow the Fleet) and "Pick Yourself Up" (Swing Time) is unfortunate.
@courtneykh24 Жыл бұрын
That’s interesting I didn’t know they were dubbed all along after that, so many sequences together though, the true grit and charm they both have individually shines even brighter when they dance together!! I’ll have to go back now and watch that whole scene just to enjoy it more now that I know all this. Thanks for the insight!! 😊👍

I agree with most of these, though I'd drop the "Barkleys of Broadway" numbers in favor of "Pick Yourself Up" {"Swing Time")and the scintillating dance contest number from "Follow the Fleet." And I'm partial to the beautiful dream sequence from "Carefree." As they leap from one giant lily pad to another and he swings her around it's romantic and glamorous and, well, carefree! I"m glad you included as an honorable mention "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket." It's so witty and it must have been so hard to get the "wrong" timing just right. "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" is my no. 1, too.

The best description for Ginger Rogers' talent: She did everything Fred Astaire did - in high heels and backwards. Who else could tap dance with wheels on their feet? Donald O'Connor in 'I Love Melvin' (1953) and Gene Kelly in 'It's Always Fair Weather' (1955), though 'Shall We Dance?' preceded both by quite a bit.

How could you possibly make a list of the greatest dance numbers by Astaire & Rogers and NOT include Pick Yourself Up from Swing Time and Lets Face the Music and Dance from Follow the Fleet? I mean you even left it out in the Honorable Mention section. How ridiculous. Those two numbers are generally regarded by serious dance critics and dance historians, along with Cheek to Cheek, as their three masterpieces. Overall the list was good but without those two additions it wasn't great.
