Rest in peace, Judy Garland. It's heartbreaking that she endured such a tragic life in Hollywood, being forced into show business at a young age, and dying at just 47 years old. 💔

Her mother and MGM made the poor woman into an addict from when she was a child and it ultimately led to her death! Her mother made her take amphetamines to be awake and bouncy then downers so she'd sleep, MGM took over doing the same and the poor woman was never able to break free from the drugs. Absolutely tragic:-/

Maybe it misses the Classic Hollywood Era by a few years but Liza Minnelli singing Cabaret in Cabaret (1972) would otherwise be at least an honorable mention.

I was in choir when I was in school. We used to do some numbers that had choreography but nothing like what you saw on glee. I like the show tunes and the musical numbers too because I used to like when we would do choreography because when it all comes together, it looks fantastic.

Thanks to my grandma who loved Judy garland, and gene Kelly, we used to watch the wizard of Oz and singing in the rain all the time. My grandma is the one who gave me my love for old movies, and those two stand out amongst all ones I watched with her. I miss you gram, every day. Thank you for showing me your love for musical movies. 💗💗

Not surprised by #1. In my opinion, #1 and #2 are pretty interchangeable. You really can’t go wrong with either of them because of how iconic they are. I love that Judy Garland is the most featured in this list. I knew she would be. Judy Garland was and still is undeniable. Judy Garland is a legend and she earned her spot.
@NoelleTakestheSky9 ай бұрын
While I love Gene Kelly and “Singing in the Rain,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” belonged at the top. That song has been an anthem for those who feel out of place where they are for literally almost a century.
@mikkibaker69079 ай бұрын
All good choices, but the Casablanca scene should be #1. None of the other songs influenced the film in such an important way. Given this criteria, I'd put "America" second and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" third. Good to see Judy Garland with (only?) three songs -- you could easily include "The Trolly Song" and several others. I think Judy Garland was the #1 entertainer of the 20th Century. And you could have included "Stormy Weather" sung by Lena Horne while you were at it.
@sifilore94629 ай бұрын
Over The Rainbow takes my mother back to her childhood and a little bit on me. But what takes both of us back is This Used To B My Playground by Madonna in A League Of Their Own. That was made in my childhood. It may not be a Hollywood classic, but the emotional effects of that song is just like OTR .

Glad to see Audrey Hepburn mentioned here. “Funny Face” is my favorite film of hers. I would have liked to see Doris Day here, too, perhaps for “Deadwood Stage” from “Calamity Jane.” “Tonight” is my favorite scene from “West Side Story.”

Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend and America were changed (censored really) for the movies. In the original plays Lorelie Lee is talking about her actual outlook on life (no production number setting) and Anita and the girls destroy Puerto Rico without any men rebutting them. I loved the card showing Dorothy next to Toto on the plow (or whatever it is) with Toto thinking: "Great, a huge storm is coming and she's gonna sing."

I’m honestly glad Julie Andrews did not reprise her role as Eliza Doolittle in the film adaptation of My Fair Lady so she could make her feature film debut as Mary Poppins. I’m sorry, but I cannot imagine anyone else playing the original Mary Poppins but Andrews and whoever would’ve played her if Julie did reprise her role as Eliza Doolittle and make her film debut in that role instead wouldn’t have made Mary Poppins such a pop culture icon as she did.

I'm trying to remember--I think it was 1957, when the movie "South Pacific" came to the theaters, and I believe there was at least one, if not two, musical numbers in it. This movie has absolutely wonderful, catchy, musical numbers whose melodies I still can recall 65+ years later. ( I even have an old 33-and-a-third vinyl record of that movie's soundtrack. ) I really enjoyed this video presentation!

There is a disproportionate focus on Judy Garland and Julie Andrews. Songs from Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, South Pacific and Camelot also come to mind. “O What a Beautiful Morning,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Going Wash That Man Out of My Hair,” and “If I Could Ever Leave You.”

No 1 and 2 songs can easily be interchangeable, depending on the mood of the day. Either song can be an “unlucky” second. However, “Somewhere..” has been around 100 years and it is known to people of all generations and nations (that use English l, even as secondary language), so Judy Garland’s song is undoubtedly No 1. It probably has been played by radio/TV/MP3/YouRube or being sang by people, only second to “Happy Birthday”. People will instantly recognize the song by singing 1 word (2 silyllables).

The top two were absolutely perfect. I think it's dumb that Singin' in the Rain the GREATEST movie musical of all time was brutally SNUBBED at the Oscars it should have received at least 10 nominations including Best Picture. But anyway Singin' in the Rain and The Wizard of Oz will go down in history as the two greatest movie musicals EVER!

Thank you for these wonderful, albeit brief, insights into how these musical numbers have an interesting backstory to them. I am going to ask you, now, to please, please, please stop using the word "iconic"; it's a very tired cliche, and all the presenters of similar videos, that is, those especially focusing on famous or influential people, use this word exclusively to emphasize the accompanying point in the given context. Please go to a thesaurus, that's a book of synonyms, i.e., a book of similar words, and find other descriptors. Listening to your commentary, it is evident that you do have a true sense of language eloquence, so it should be easy for you to drop "iconic" from your vocabulary usage. Thank you. ( One last point: I'll let you keep the term "indelible" this time. )
@jamesmarkscott62028 ай бұрын
a worthy top 10 list, though it's impossible to keep it at just 10 w/so many incredible, memorable musicals on film. 'you'll never walk alone' from carousel comes to mind, a song so powerful it doesn't just happen once in the middle of the movie but it also closes the film in such an emotional, hopeful way. i thought the '02 adaptation of 'chicago' was a modern musical classic w/a number of songs that could have qualified.

At 1:21, you showed a clip from Casablanca of a beautiful young woman tearfully proclaiming "Viva La France!" at the end of La Marseillaise. That woman is Madeleine Lebeau. She played Yvonne, a girl spurned by Humphrey Bogart's Rick Blaine. She doesn't take it very well and later starts dating a Nazi. Madeleine was only 19 when she was in Casablanca, and was the last person with a credited role in the film to die. She passed away in Spain at the age of 92 in 2016. It was only when she passed away that I knew how young she was when Casablanca was released; I thought she was older. She wasn't the youngest cast member, but she outlived her younger castmate, Joy Page.
