How I Met Your Mother is the reason I am reluctant to get sucked in to another series just so the ending ruins another one and makes me feel I wasted my time and emotion.

The finale ruined the show for me. Once Robin and Barney decided to divorce in the first half hour and throw out all the character growth they had, it was over for me. Tracy dying and Robin and Ted getting back together was just the final nail. It was bad story telling after all those years.

Are you sure it was BAD storytelling, and not just not the story you were rooting for? I mean, life tends to not really go as we want it (all the time). I specifically mean that people can find themselves in very different situations compared to what they hoped or expected, once “a little down the road” has arrived.

All they had to do was change the ending to Ted telling the kids how he met their mother because she recently died and Barney and Robin staying together. They could have refilmed the ending with the kids and added a little winky line like, "it feels like you've been telling this story for 9 years."

0:37 sums it up perfectly..."Timing is everything!" Though it's not the ending I would have loved to have seen, it did bring the story full circle. In older Ted's mind, he started the story with how he met Robin because that is where the road to meeting the mother started(no Robin, no Robin and Barney. No Robin and Barney, no wedding. No wedding, no meeting the mother). However, his kids were also right; it was a long, drawn out story confessing his feelings for their Aunt Robin. But there’s a difference between your 'true love' and your 'soul mate'. Ted and Robin were in love at first sight, but weren't ever truly happy together because they wanted different things in life; Ted wanted to settle down and have kids, while Robin wanted to focus on her job and didn't want kids (though she was genuinely sad when she was told she couldn't have any). When Ted met Tracy(the mother), he met his soul mate, the one person who he could truly be his nerdy, quirky self with and have his family with. And with his heart finally able to have the wife and kids he always wanted, his feelings for Robin were pushed to the VERY back of his mind. Once the mother died however, Robin came back into his life more and more often and therefore back into his mind. We see that Robin has an apartment in New York and once again has a mass of dogs, so we can assume that she's stopped traveling for work like she used to. Therefore, it is the perfect time for her and Ted to get together: Ted had his dream of the perfect wife and kids, and Robin had her dream of traveling the world and becoming a famous reporter. Now that they've done the things that were keeping them apart, there's nothing holding them back from being together. They were destined to be together …just not when they first met. ... It's why season 9 is so drawn out; it shows just how perfect Robin and Barney are together...at that time. But when Robin gets the chance to travel for work, she puts her job before her marriage and that ultimately leads to its end. Barney reverted back to his scum-bag ways because that's his safety net; he did it after his and Robin's first go, he did it after Nora broke up with him and then again after he and Quinn broke up. The only thing able to change him for good was his one true love, the birth of his daughter. As for Ted and Tracy, sadly, 'Happily Ever After' isn't always 60, 70, 80 years down the road, and after six years, Ted realizes he is finally able to move on. If he wanted to tell the kids only about how he met Tracy, he could have started the story on the day of Robin and Barney's wedding, but instead started with the day he met Robin. 2030 Ted is retelling his entire story because he is convincing himself that, no matter how deep he buried them so that he could be happy with Tracy, his feelings for Robin are still there. And now that he IS finally able to let go of Tracy(like Tracy was finally able to let go of Max), those feelings are coming back out. Even Penny and Luke say that they've seen the way he and Robin look at each other. And after hearing their father's full story, why wouldn't they want him to finally be happy again? It's not some fairy-tale story where everything works out...it's realistic. And in reality, people revert to their old ways, lose touch with old friends, don't see each other for years at a time. Couples break up, get divorced, become widows....it's not perfect because life isn't perfect.

Pros in season 9. .new set/location that takes place in a new place other than teds apartment/mclarens/robins apartment. .more romantic tone. .new characters such as tracy and daphne. .in addition, daphne feels more like a movie character and it fleshes out great Cons .fresh out of ideas .killing the mother just for ted and robin to happen. .the rushed ending

The ending to how I met your mother is the exact reason I no longer watch sitcoms. I will not invest my time into something to be that disappointed by how it ends. Thank you because I no longer waste my time watching TV. I watch old movies and stuff that has a decent outcome. But I haven't watched regular TV in the last few years. I guess the writers forgot that people grow up carrots grow up that's why we're still attached to shows that were 40 and 50 years old is because they were decent shows that ended with some kind of humanity. I would have rather than put Ted with somebody we didn't even know them with Robin. I wanted Robin with Barney. Wanted them to all still be friends. Because sometimes when you're working and life's going on sometimes TV shows can bring you out of your miseries. No I just don't give him a chance to even try
@cmzf9473 ай бұрын
The answer is actually very simple for fixing the final season of How I Met Your Mother- have the first half of the season lead up to Barney and Robin’s wedding and the second half takes place at certain moments over the years between Barney and Robin’s wedding weekend in 2013 and the day Ted is telling his kids the story in 2030. We could see Marshall and Lily having their daughter Daisy and living in Italy with their parents, Barney and Robin going through marriage life (which could POSSIBLY lead to their divorce) and Ted and Tracey building their life together and raising their kids. Not only would we see what the gang gets up to after the wedding and what happens in their lives during those 17 years, but it would also make time to answer a bunch of unanswered questions that fans are always annoyingly obsessed with like how Lily’s career in Italy went, what happened with Tracey’s band and who the mother of Barney’s daughter is. But of course, the main two problems everyone has with the final season is what happens in the finale- Barney and Robin’s divorce and Tracey’s death. Now am I defending either of these? No I am not but I will explain them a little bit. Let’s talk about them… B & R’s divorce: from the very start, it was clear that Ted and Robin don’t get married and she’s not the mother of his kids. And while they did have some good moments, it was very obvious to why they don’t work as Robin’s main focus is her career and she wants to travel the world while Ted wants to meets the One and settle down. Neither Barney nor Robin are the emotional type and both can be pretty messed up and stubborn but they work so well together. Does it suck that they got divorced? Yes 100% but it sticks with the themes of the show. HIMYM is a show about life and one of the things it does best is that it can be realistic because that’s how life is. We all have to deal with the loss of a loved one eventually no matter how much it hurts. Not everyone gets their dream job. Not every marriage works out. Not everyone can live a long life with their spouse (more on this later). Realism has always been one of the most important aspects of HIMYM which is what helps make it a great show. Barney and Robin getting divorced sort of makes sense because it happens for the same reason as Robin’s other relationships which is her career. She was traveling a lot for her job and it was making them both unhappy. If this had to stay, then at least have a better way of having Barney coping with it instead of just diving back into his old ways and maybe have the “Perfect Month” be a midlife crisis or something. After a lot of thinking, I’ve realised that even after everything in the series, both Ted and Barney grow in their own different ways but Robin mostly stays the same career driven woman she was when she was introduced, putting her job above everything and even after she gets married, that doesn’t change as both Ted and Barney go through a lot of heartbreak because of it. This may be a hot take, but maybe it would’ve been best for Ted and Barney if they didn’t keep going after Robin. Maybe they could’ve been happier earlier. Who knows? Tracey’s death: out of the two big problems that the finale gave, this one is easily the most hated and it’s not hard to see why. After all these years, after everything that happened, after spending the entire season getting to know Tracey, they just kill her off just so Ted can go running back to a girl he simped for for a quarter of a century? Unacceptable. Now I guess there’s a very few amount of people who could say that this also ties into the themes of realism that the show is so well known (which I can sort of see this point) but the fans really think that it ruined so much of the character’s growth. The solution is very simple, DONT KILL TRACEY (Also it probably wouldve been great if Tracey was introduced a season or two earlier and we see her do her own thing while the gang continues in their daily lives). It makes perfect sense as to why the alternative ending happened. REWRITE Here’s how Season 9 could’ve happened to make it better- The first half of the season takes place at Barney and Robin’s wedding weekend so it wouldn’t feel as dragged out. Then the second half goes over the next few years as we see what happens to the gang now that they’re not spending 95% of their time in McClarens and answer some questions that fans would’ve had for a while. I would prefer that Barney and Robin stayed together but if they have to get divorced, so be it. Show Barney process the divorce in a better way than just sleeping with young women but in a way that makes sense to his character, eventually having the “Perfect Month” be a midlife crisis and he gets the last girl pregnant (also we get to at least meet the woman). Continue showing Ted and Tracey’s relationship and why she’s perfect for him. I will admit, I never heard of that deleted scene where Robin tells Ted she still loves him but he says he’s happy, but I’ll admit that would be pretty satisfying to see. As for all those hints of Tracey dying beforehand, maybe say she got really sick and it seemed like she wouldn’t make it, but through some miracle, she did. And then we get the Alternative ending but instead of ending on “and that kids is how I met your mother”, after Ted says that, Penny and Luke can joke about how it felt like a decade since he started. Then Tracey comes into the room and laughed when she realised what was going on there. She then says that it’s time for dinner and that their guests have arrived. In walks Marshall and Lily and their kids, Barney and his daughter Ellie (who’s wearing a suit) and Robin who is back together with one of her better exs (or instead she missed Barney and after how well her career has become, decided to finally put love ahead of work and change for the better, rekindling their romance). The gang and the kids all sit around the dining room table and as the camera pans out to the city they’re all in, we get one last speech from Ted about life. The End.

@tremkl3 ай бұрын
I disagree with so much of this video. For one, most of the episodes of the final season are among my favorites. I’ll agree that you could easily cut the bed time story episode, and a couple other ones would be reasonable cuts, and adding even 1 or 2 extra episodes to that transition at the end would have significant improved the ending. On the other hand, so much of HIMYM played with expectations, setting up one joke and switching to another. The pilot completely convinces you Robin is the mother, then playfully tricks you with “And that’s how I met your Aunt Robin”. It meant that the entire series, the only person confirmed to not be the mother is also the person they’re setting up along the way to also be the person he’s supposed to end up with. Sure, two people falling in love and starting a family is an incredibly natural thing, but one of those people dying before the other is just as natural. Robin wasn’t right for Ted because he wanted a family. Ted wasn’t right for Robin because she wanted to develop her career. Ted and Robin are a much more natural pair for each other when Ted already has a family, and Robin feels like she’s done everything she needs to do with her career, and would like to have someone to come home to other than her dogs. I definitely would have preferred they resolve the wedding an episode or two earlier, and give us more time to make the end of Robin and Barney’s marriage feel natural, or to show more of Ted and Tracy’s marriage, but claiming the Tracy death wasn’t foreshadowed is claiming The Time Travelers hadn’t happened, where they suuuuuuper foreshadowed that the mother was no longer around an entire season before her death.

Alternative ending ideas. 1. Ted telling his kids he (or Tracy) are sick and tell this 9 year overly detailed story was his was of avoid telling them. 2. Robin and Barney are getting divorced and one of them (in this case Robin) isn't coming around as much as she used to, so Ted is trying to explain Robin's feelings. 3. Penny or Luke might want to be a reporter, so ted tells them "Hey, How I met your mother links is connect to How I met your aunt Robin. 4. They have to move into an apartment for whatever reason (I wouldn't put it past ted to say "I need you 2 to go stay with your cousins for a few days.") 5. Maybe Barney ran off and left Ellie with them.

After watching this show and seeing the ending I feel as though the writers did not care what the fans thought. They should have given themselves options on how it would end. Although there are hints that the mom died (having blonde kids and Stella being in the room) and then they also TRASH Barney's character majority of the characters have deep psych issues. Unless they had the characters address them in a better way no way was it ever going to work. Why name the show that if in the end you were going to throw the character out? Season nine was a dumpster fire and the writers knew it.

They should have got the mum in the show for the entire season 9 and ended it at season 10. I always felt the mother looked a bit like a mixture of Lily and Robin. But she was the perfect choice for Ted and they ruined it by her dying, while the kids were still very young as well. The mother dying and having one weekend for the whole season were two of the biggest mistakes

Haven't watch the video yet, but I'm betting they make the show worse. Edit: Watched it. It was trash. The writers clearly have a fundamental misunderstanding of the show and skipped episodes entirely. At least two of the qualms stated in this video were answered in the show, even being the focal point of an entire storyline. The show was written with the intention to depict different ways our lives turn out. One couple grew old together, another divorced, and the third were separated young by death. These are literally what people go through all the time, and that was the point. There is an episode where Robin and Ted talk about chemistry and timing. The entire scene is the two of them discussing how if you have chemistry, you just need timing, and that timing is a bitch. The timing for Robin and Ted didn't happen until 2030, because they both wanted different things in life. Ted wanted to get married and have a family. Robin wanted to focus on her career. They both got exactly what they wanted, and when the time was right, they came back together. There is so much wrong with this video, and it's borderline insulting. Either watch the show so you actually know what you're talking about, or just don't make a video.
