Correction in number 2 - You mentioned that it's Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche as the doomed couple in English Patient, but that is incorrect. Juliette Binoche actually plays the nurse who is in love with Naveen Andrews. The doomed couple is Ralph Fiennes and Kristen Scott Thomas

The book is so beautiful… the story and the writing. i’ve never found a film adaptation to do it justice. I think it would have to be a mini-series with at least three episodes to capture the tale. That said, however, the Juliet Stevenson narration is absolutely beautiful in every way. (She can speak the German, French, sing the songs, read the dialogs and distinguish each character with a stand alone voice. She is perfection as the narrator of what must be a difficult book to read aloud.)

I hate how "Belle" keeps flying under the radar. Not only is it an excellent film concerning racism and classism in 18th century Britain, but it's absolutely gorgeous and the chemistry between the two leads is off the charts. Plus, the male lead, Mr. Davinier, has, in my opinion, some of the most swoon-worthy lines put on film. It's a serious must see.

Another case of rewriting history. The concept of ‘racism’ in 18th century Britain is ridiculous because the average Briton wouldn’t have clapped eyes on anyone of another race in their entire lives. There may have been very rare instances of non-whites coming to the island, but the influx only really happened on any scale in the 20th century when people immigrated from other parts of the empire. Yes, we all know a small number of black servants worked in some extremely wealthy houses, but this was absolutely the exception, not the rule.

I think they picked the wrong Pride and Prejudice for #1! The 2005 version with Keira Knightly is good, but it's presented as if the author of the book were Charlotte Bronte, not Jane Austin. The scene is the rain they clipped here is a good example: confessing one's love in a storm is really "high Romantic," which is not Austen's sensibility (play on words intended) at all. She doesn't go in for such matchy-matchy scenes. At #1 I would instead suggest the BBC Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle from 1995 -- the one that made Colin Firth a major star. Yes, it was made for television and that makes it a 5 1/2 hour movie, but with that time, it is much truer to the book (any 2-hour version has to cut sooo many great scenes) and it is almost perfectly cast (I quibble only with Jane Bennet). If you love romance, Austen, or great adaptations of great books, go watch it and see if you agree!

@@cmm5542 You make a good point, but I still think that considering it a 5 1/2 hour movie helps; the BBC version is true not only to the full narrative of the book (aside from the famous jump in the estate's lake scene), but to the tone of the book as well.

Dangerous Liaisons is definitely a gorgeous period film, but... romantic? From what I can recall, this movie has little to no actual romance. My main complaint about the list, however, is my usual one -- recency bias. Aside from "Gone With the Wind" and "Dr. Zhivago," all the movies featured here are from the 80s onward. Some movies I would argue qualify for the list include: Camille (1937), featuring Greta Garbo (her best performance IMO) and Robert Taylor; That Hamilton Woman (1941), with Laurence Olivier as Lord Nelson and Vivien Leigh as Emma Hamilton; Random Harvest (1943), a Ronald Colman/ Greer Garson tearjerker set in the aftermath of World War I; The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), part comedy, part tragedy, with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney at their charismatic best; The African Queen (1951), a romantic comedy set in Africa during World War I, with gold-standard performances by Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. All the same, I love seeing The Age of Innocence, Sense and Sensibility, and the 1995 Persuasion get the credit they deserve.

While it's not thought of as a romantic movie per se, I always thought Legends of the Fall was such a beautiful love story

I would add Wuthering Heights (1939) with Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier. .. right up there with Jane Eyre (2011) Pride and Prejudice (2005) and the BBC miniseries (1995) with Colin Firth he for me was the original Mr. Darcy, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion but the 2018 version with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry Jones (swoon).

Atonement was the only movie that has ever made me cry my eyes out! It was utterly heartbreaking. Pride and Prejudice (2005) is probably my favorite movie of all time! Is it the best Austen adaptation? probably not, but is still my personal fav!

I like the 1983 Jane Eyre. Six and a half hours long, you get to relive the whole book. And rated a big 8.0 on IMDB by the fans. Zelah Clarke. Timothy Dalton

I completly agree with the number one. Pride and Prejudice it's a beatiful love story and the movie is well adapted. But I don' agree on a couple of things. First, if you include movies like Brokeback Mountain or Atonement an others from the 20th century, I would've had also included Carol. It's beautiful and touching love story and movie in general. Both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara had an amazing chemistry, and did an amazing work. And the period where things happen it's a very important subject of the movie. And second, I would've not included Shakespeare In Love. In my opinion, it's one of the most overrated movies ever. But that's only my opinion, It doesn't mean that I'm right

My fave is 1995's "Pride and Prejudice". The performances of Jennifer Ehle, Colin Firth, and the rest of that cast, imo, stood head and shoulders above all other film and television productions ever made. p.s.: Samantha Morton's 'Jane Eyre' was so much more believable than Mia Wasikowski's.

Good list, thanks for including Remains of the Day, Atonement and Brokeback Mountain all stunning movies I've watched over and over, though I feel you missed a few, and easily replaced Shakespeare in Love (meh) and Titanic (banal)... Maurice, Room with a View, Carol and the best movie ever made, Wong Kar Wai's In the The Mood For Love (glaring omission)
