If you're planning on doing a major paint overhaul, then primer is recommended. Certain paint archetypes don't adhere properly with plain plastic. You can kind of get away with it by using solvent based acrylic, but even then I don't recommend it. If you want to add details without primer, then I recommend rough sanding every surface piece with 800 grit sandpaper and finish with 1000 grit. Wash every piece and let it air dry. Then spray your kit with either primer, matter finish, or Satin Finish. If your doing an overhaul then prime is recommended, but if your painting subtle details go with matte or satin. They have slight rough and semi smooth texture that it will make paint easier to adhere to the kit, and add in that the kit was sanded. Now you have additional support for layering. If you're handbrushing remember the golden principle. Less is always more, 1st layer should be somewhat watery/milky, let the paint self level, and move on to the next part. It's all about brush control with single strokes following the same brush direction. 2nd layer should be milky consistency, and once again layer your paint. Around the 3rd or 4th coat is when you finally start to get results. If you're spray painting I recommend learning how to tape, mask, or use blue tack to cover unwanted paint coverage. If you're airbrushing then you should have an understanding of paint layering, masking, thinning out your paints, and paint foundations for base coats/complimentary tones/contrasting tones. If you want to see the entire process from start to finish with great detail and explanation I recommend learning from the tank model building community. They have advanced techniques that many gunpla builders use, but their have been refined; mainly due to them thinking outside the box. One solid KZbinr I recommend is Jon Buis; look at how he builds gunpla and he literally tells you everything and how he applied everything he's learned to perfect his build processes.

I thought water decals was included in the box 😁 but overall very satisfied with the build results 😤 looks like RG rather than HG now

Still looks a HG; could definitely use some more color separation and added details. It's still a good build, and the kit itself is up there with top tier HG kits.
