'The land of the free' has jumped over the edge and into the abyss of Theocracy. The US is no better than any other theocracy it fights such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan etc. Every Theocracy limits your outlook on life, narrows your views and stifles social interaction to the point that it divides people and communities. Religion is important and enriching when it is CHOSEN instead of force fed. When the separation of state and religion is abandoned, e.g. by mixing religious ideas and education, law and religion, governing and religion, health and religion, personal choices and religion, individuality and freedom of thought, ideas and development suffer. That is why the separation of church and state is so very important. Wikipedia: The separation of church and state is a philosophical and jurisprudential concept for defining political distance in the relationship between religious organizations and the state. Conceptually, the term refers to the creation of a secular state (with or without legally explicit church-state separation) and to disestablishment, the changing of an existing, formal relationship between the church and the state.[1] Although the concept is older, the exact phrase "separation of church and state" is derived from "wall of separation between church and state", a term coined by Thomas Jefferson. The concept was promoted by Enlightenment philosophers such as John Locke.[2]

I worked at a school with a high population of LGBTQ+ youth. The ONLY reason pronouns were discussed was because of that, but even then, it was mostly used in introducing oneself to others. We did NOT have lengthy class discussions about pronouns. Contrary to what most conservative leaders want to think, we spent the majority of the time discussing math, reading, science, etc. If a school with a high population of LGBTQ+ students isn't having discussions about this, I find it hard to believe that any other school is doing it. The little girl in the Reyes family mentions that they don't seem to be emphasizing the horrors suffered by slaves. OK...it would be completely unjustifiable not to bring that into discussion as a teacher. The woman who was there reporting doesn't go after the assertions made in the film but takes issue on the basis of emotions a child of a certain race might feel, such as a black child. Point taken. The fact the Reyes girl already seems to know something about the attendant suffering of black Africans who were enslaved does inform us she has to already know something about this, does it not?

Funny how my comment can be removed but I still get notifications for the thread. Homeschooling is a threat to the idea that all kids should get a good education. Those that opt out prevent their kids from learning about that "dirty" word, tolerance. A number of people who were home-schooled said there was no Black history in their American History studies. Imagine not learning much about slavery, Jim Crow segregation, the Civil Rights movement and so on! A while ago I heard about a religious group (with their own religious schools) that got their members elected to the school board to defund the public schools, which shut down band and extra-curriculars and put some high schoolers in 4 hours of lunch plus "study hall." This was to punish people of different race and religion because the separation of church and state meant they couldn't use tax money to fund their schools. I think they were blocked in court from selling a public school building to their religious organization for pennies on the dollar.

This is such a red herring. Nobody really cares about Prager U. We should be paying attention to the fact that American schools are failing to teach our children - especially non-White & non-Asian children! Despite the fact that we spend more per student than most advanced nations, our educational performance overall is near the bottom of the rankings for industrialized nations. What is worse, American students of color score worse than the average (underperforming) American student. Some of this can be explained by Whites & Asians being more likely to live in good school districts, to hire tutors & to send kids to after school programs teaching math, science and reading. Students who get a High School Diploma find that they are under-educated for the jobs of today - thus they have to go deep into debt to get a College Degree. Note that filing bankruptcy doesn't 'forgive' student loans - that debt follows a person to his or her grave. The fact that non-White & non-Asian students tend to be less prepared for college means they are more likely to wind up with huge debt and no degree. Our school system should be ashamed of itself - it is post-modernist Jim Crow!
