One of my favourite stories about Grant is the time when certain of his rivals went to Lincoln to complain that Grant was a drunkard. Lincoln asked them to find out what brand of whisky Grant drank so he could have a crate of it sent to all his other generals.

😂 😂 😂 Grant after his presidency went on a world tour he stopped of in India to the surprise of the British administration who had invited him for lectures he said India is a beautiful country different landscapes and it should have its independence. 😂 As you probably realise the British administration weren't happy

The South and its sympathizers did their best to build up Lee and the "Lost Cause" and dismiss and downplay Grant. I've never understood that, as someone who grew up in Michigan. The first time I stood in front of Grant's portrait in the National Portrait Gallery in D.C., I teared up, feeling so sorry that we Americans have not given him the credit for saving the Union and fighting to end slavery, instead of Lee doing his best to destroy the Union and continue slavery in the Confederacy.

@magister ludi Well President Grant was actually reluctant to accept the presidential position maybe thanked the president before him. All I know is that the one before him appeased the South and he did tried his best to get rid of corruption and he did squashed the KKK.

I am from the "White Swan" area of Yakima Washington . And part of my family were early settlers in this part of the then Oregon Territories. Ulysses Grant was stationed in White Swan before the Civil War . I would like to know if there is any history about his life and activities while he was billeted there . I remember hearing about a skirmish with the "Yakima's" over the deaths of some settlers (the "Sawyers? or the Parker's?") Was this why Grant was stationed there ? And what was the relationship between the Yakima People and Grant ? I understand that he was also known for smoking the local hemp while billited up in the then Oregon Territories.

Grant’s Memorial on the National Mall, to the rear of the Capitol, is one of the most moving, yet under appreciated pieces in the Mall. By far one of the most complex, interesting, gritty, humane, and even flawed leaders. But his importance can’t be underestimated, especially coming on the heels of a truly vile Andrew Johnson.

When I was in school we knew who Grant was, but were taught he was someone who drank a lot and was known as a butcher. We mostly were taught positive things abt Lincoln and how Lee was our greatest general of all time even tho he fought for the south. I am glad grant history is coming into the light. He deserves this.

Even if the South lost they won the myth and even if President Grant won the war he still lost and was forgotten. With recent events, I do hope that the people should know that Grant is not the three things they were taught in school. The Butcher, Drunk, and Corrupt I'm not American but I think there's this thing called the "Lost Cause" in which the South rewrote the narrative and with that it also affected the role of Grant.

Gen. Grant, in my opinion, was the first overall commander that understood the logistical superiority of the Federal forces in that war. All before him were too timid, too impressed with the pedigree of Southern officers, and.were too quick to stand down and retreat, relinquish the battlefield and campaign initiative to the Confederates. Products of the times they grew up in, most Federal officers thought in terms of states rights and identity. In the aftermath of the battle of Gettysburg, Gen. Meade telegraphed Lincoln with satisfaction reporting that the enemy had been repulsed from our territory and was returning to his own territory in defeat. Lincoln exclaimed, its all our territory! And when am I going to find a General that understands that? Grant was that General. Grant understood that the object was to destroy the Army of Northern Virginia. And the only way to do that was by constant contact of arms to wear down the rebels with the superior force that the Union possessed. To do that meant taking the causalites that were the price in blood to conclude the war as soon as possible. It was harsh and seemingly cruel, but the losses would have been worse if the same old timid and piecemeal tactics had been continued. Gen. Lee realized that Grant was not to be deterred and that was the writing on the wall for the Confederacy.

Agreed. The siege at Vicksburg was decisive because it showed Lee and the Confederates just how tireless and methodical Grant was. Grant’s ability to plan and mobilize the materiel to support wave after wave of assaults made the difference. That he had someone equally tenacious in Sherman only made the Union Army more formidable.

It’s to bad that Grant’s reputation was destroyed by illegitimate myths as part of the “lost cause.” Thankfully, the lost cause is starting to diminish, and hopefully the truth about just how amazing this man truly was will be revived for the first time in over one hundred years. Think about it this man was born with nothing in Ohio, and was never respected for the first part of his life and then managed to save the union twice. As a general, and as a president. It doesn’t get more inspirational, and American than that.

The South had a policy of executing Black Union soldiers who surrendered during battle but sparing White ones who did. Grant complained to Robert E. Lee about this policy and asked that he stop it. Lee did not. Lee was a war criminal by any standard. Anyone who looks at the excesses of Grant in battle should consider this.

Grant showed graciousness to Lee at the end of the war. It's unfortunate that leniency and this kind of graciousness to the South, whose armed rebels were effectively traitors, were returned only with stubborn prejudice and discrimination that was only later exposed and addressed by MLK and that we still have to live with today.

Grant was the only general on either side who was great at penetrating deep into enemy territory and winning. This he probably learned in the prior Mexican American war. Taking part as a supply officer, Grant as well as Lee were part of the US forces penetrating deep into Mexico. Lee, on the other hand, did not seem to learn much from the Mexican American war, as he screwed up badly when he twice penetrated into Northern territory. Lee's forces always seemed to be spending a lot of valuable time ripping off supplies from the locals, instead of attending to the business of war. After the Civil War, Grant penetrated deep into the West in the Plains Indian war, where the greatest Union generals were arrayed against the hapless Native Americans. Grant, as Commander in Chief, and his great generals Sherman, Sheridan, and Custer penetrated deep into the West using their Civil War talents in really an unfair contest.

Grant was a true giant of history,. He not only saved the American Republic, he oppressed the rise of the KKK after the war by posting troops in the South to keep them in line. He got a bad rap because some of his cabinet pulled off some dodgy financial deals which Grant new nothing about. On top of it all, he was modest about his accomplishments. An English diplomat said of him after a meeting with Grant that he had never seen a man who had so much power and yet was so humble.

Sanders, who did a 180 degree pivot on gun control and immigration reform, is hardly consistent. Nor does someone who has pushed for the state to seize all companies, banks and transport, showing compassion. As to competency, the guy has the least number of bills passed into law, of any legislator. He doesn't do his job, he is incompetent. Sanders is just like Trump, a lying demagogue, and a dangerous isolationist.

His magnanimity in the surrender terms, was matched by MOH winner JL Chamberlin's troops salute to the Rebs as they stacked arms for the last time. From such actions a lasting peace and brotherhood can be rebuilt... that was the failure of the Treaty of Versailles that ended WW1.

Surely, Grant was a military genius, but the climate of our times brings people to overrate his generalship. McClellan's strategy based upon building up an invincible army of military might was revisited, during the Gulf War (1990-1991). Just take a look at how America, and its allies, were building up an overwhelming force, prior to actually sweeping forward, irresistibly. Grant's victory at Fort Donelson was as much do to the melt down of the enemy command structure, as it was to his own prowess. Vicksburg was Grant's signature accomplishment and masterpiece beyond anything else he did. Grant actually was winning cheap victories (with the exception of Shiloh), until he faced R E Lee in Virginia; and, from that, he got a reputation as a "butcher", but that had more to do with R E Lee's brilliant generalship, which made Grant pay a huge price, in the end.

Grant may have been a competent general but he was obviously no psychologist. The bending over backwards of the victorious north to appease the racist south caused needless suffering and countless black lives. Just like he said he fired a guy he 'doesn't know' for snooping around his arms deal. BTW under the definition of 'carpetbagger' there is a picture of Donald J Trump. That's what he is.

"One of the most underappreciated generals" is just pure salesmanship to get people interested. He's certainly not forgotten or under appreciated, just pre-world war and therefore less relatable to contemporary American audiences. I doubt the actor's raspy voice is authentic for the era.

I love how easy it is to manipulate Americans. All caught up in fake outrage because Biden said something stupid which is nothing new. Why don't people focus on the fact that Donald Trump is placing corrupt unqualified judges in the Supreme Court with lifetime appointments. Lifetime. Long after you have forgotten about Biden stupid remark the Supreme Court judges will still be in power. So when we elect another con man into office which we will since we haven't done anything to stop it will be worse than Trump because he'll have Trump judges to protect him. At least now the Supreme Court has been protecting us. But let's focus on being Biden and saying stupid things as usual because that's what the popular outrage is now.

I just hope that America ( while not perfect ) is capable of learning from its past.Frankly , I'm not sure we can recover what we've lost these last years. Too much hate and ignorance to overcome.
