One of my favourite stories about Grant is the time when certain of his rivals went to Lincoln to complain that Grant was a drunkard. Lincoln asked them to find out what brand of whisky Grant drank so he could have a crate of it sent to all his other generals.

The South and its sympathizers did their best to build up Lee and the "Lost Cause" and dismiss and downplay Grant. I've never understood that, as someone who grew up in Michigan. The first time I stood in front of Grant's portrait in the National Portrait Gallery in D.C., I teared up, feeling so sorry that we Americans have not given him the credit for saving the Union and fighting to end slavery, instead of Lee doing his best to destroy the Union and continue slavery in the Confederacy.

I am from the "White Swan" area of Yakima Washington . And part of my family were early settlers in this part of the then Oregon Territories. Ulysses Grant was stationed in White Swan before the Civil War . I would like to know if there is any history about his life and activities while he was billeted there . I remember hearing about a skirmish with the "Yakima's" over the deaths of some settlers (the "Sawyers? or the Parker's?") Was this why Grant was stationed there ? And what was the relationship between the Yakima People and Grant ? I understand that he was also known for smoking the local hemp while billited up in the then Oregon Territories.

Even if the South lost they won the myth and even if President Grant won the war he still lost and was forgotten. With recent events, I do hope that the people should know that Grant is not the three things they were taught in school. The Butcher, Drunk, and Corrupt I'm not American but I think there's this thing called the "Lost Cause" in which the South rewrote the narrative and with that it also affected the role of Grant.

Gen. Grant, in my opinion, was the first overall commander that understood the logistical superiority of the Federal forces in that war. All before him were too timid, too impressed with the pedigree of Southern officers, and.were too quick to stand down and retreat, relinquish the battlefield and campaign initiative to the Confederates. Products of the times they grew up in, most Federal officers thought in terms of states rights and identity. In the aftermath of the battle of Gettysburg, Gen. Meade telegraphed Lincoln with satisfaction reporting that the enemy had been repulsed from our territory and was returning to his own territory in defeat. Lincoln exclaimed, its all our territory! And when am I going to find a General that understands that? Grant was that General. Grant understood that the object was to destroy the Army of Northern Virginia. And the only way to do that was by constant contact of arms to wear down the rebels with the superior force that the Union possessed. To do that meant taking the causalites that were the price in blood to conclude the war as soon as possible. It was harsh and seemingly cruel, but the losses would have been worse if the same old timid and piecemeal tactics had been continued. Gen. Lee realized that Grant was not to be deterred and that was the writing on the wall for the Confederacy.
@RichardGrijalva4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The siege at Vicksburg was decisive because it showed Lee and the Confederates just how tireless and methodical Grant was. Grant’s ability to plan and mobilize the materiel to support wave after wave of assaults made the difference. That he had someone equally tenacious in Sherman only made the Union Army more formidable.

It’s to bad that Grant’s reputation was destroyed by illegitimate myths as part of the “lost cause.” Thankfully, the lost cause is starting to diminish, and hopefully the truth about just how amazing this man truly was will be revived for the first time in over one hundred years. Think about it this man was born with nothing in Ohio, and was never respected for the first part of his life and then managed to save the union twice. As a general, and as a president. It doesn’t get more inspirational, and American than that.

The South had a policy of executing Black Union soldiers who surrendered during battle but sparing White ones who did. Grant complained to Robert E. Lee about this policy and asked that he stop it. Grant was the only general on either side who was great at penetrating deep into enemy territory and winning. This he probably learned in the prior Mexican American war. Taking part as a supply officer, Grant as well as Lee were part of the US forces penetrating deep into Mexico. Lee, on the other hand, did not seem to learn much from the Mexican American war, as he screwed up badly when he twice penetrated into Northern territory. Lee's forces always seemed to be spending a lot of valuable time ripping off supplies from the locals, instead of attending to the business of war. After the Civil War, Grant penetrated deep into the West in the Plains Indian war, where the greatest Union generals were arrayed against the hapless Native Americans. Grant, as Commander in Chief, and his great generals Sherman, Sheridan, and Custer penetrated deep into the West using their Civil War talents in really an unfair contest.

Surely, Grant was a military genius, but the climate of our times brings people to overrate his generalship. McClellan's strategy based upon building up an invincible army of military might was revisited, during the Gulf War (1990-1991). Just take a look at how America, and its allies, were building up an overwhelming force, prior to actually sweeping forward, irresistibly. Grant's victory at Fort Donelson was as much do to the melt down of the enemy command structure, as it was to his own prowess. Vicksburg was Grant's signature accomplishment and masterpiece beyond anything else he did. Grant actually was winning cheap victories (with the exception of Shiloh), until he faced R E Lee in Virginia; and, from that, he got a reputation as a "butcher", but that had more to do with R E Lee's brilliant generalship, which made Grant pay a huge price, in the end.
