Yes, that’s what their for. I got 2 in Germany, and they come with bells. But one of mine had the bell missing. They look so pretty. And Agree, use on Pete! 🤗

The thing you called a knife rest is a vajra. It’s part of buddhist and Hindu ritual. The bell is also used as part of the ritual, as far as I know. I’m not familiar with the concepts behind those objects, but I saw vajra in Japan and in Tibetan art.

Prior to home intercoms, when house were more mansions than homes, the bell pull alerted the individual home staff to come to that particular room. Downton Abbey used the bell pull system a lot if you ever watched the show. I love when you and mom get the giggles! So sweet.

Hi Selena and Mom! I have been collecting Asian jackets/robes for years. I literally gasped when I saw the one you found with dragons. The double-dragon design is quite rare. The embroidery technique is called couching, but yours is also padded or pillowed. It is an extraordinary find. (I have two such robes and it took me years to find them.) Probably other people have told you that the needlepoint piece is a bell pull. It is hung on the wall with a bell at the bottom, and used to call servants. The vintage bead necklace you showed at the end looks like wedding cake beads.

Well done mammoth task of garage sales gosh. Mumma would have been worn out. Next time pack a big picnic with a chilli bin and thermos for drinks, wipes, sanitizer. A big cart with wheels be great it could also hold a couple of small light fold down tripod seats. 9 hours is way too long to be on feet but glad you both found lunch though. Loved the fabric Mumma and umbrella. Also loved the cream dragon Kimono that is amazing the shorter one was cool too. Lucky girls great finds.😊 I go to my daughters for baths too she has a giant deep one. Showers aren't the same.

Fun time with your precious mom. My favorite thing was your braided belt with silver hearts. My favorite thing that your mom found was the surf jacket. Those cuffs, especially the bigger one🥰. When my Mom was young ,in the late 1960s , men would bring robes back from overseas military tours. My Moms sat in the box until I grew up and wore it. That red one though!

It's called gold couching or gold work. There are quite a few videos on youtube that show how it's done. I'd bet that piece is from the late 40's early 50's and likely brought back from WW2 as a gift for someone's wife.

My favorite thing is the fun the two of you have together! My mom loved to go to yard sales, she passed about six years ago, then my daughter passed nine months later. I have lost on both ends ! I think it’s great the two of you make time to do the things you love to do together. Plus, who can resist the excitement mom has when she finds a shower curtain for $2.00 or a free surfers jacket. Then there’s always a chance y’all will find a five hundred pound concrete cherub baby water fountain ! Look out now, that thing would be all up in the back of the car, everything else would be in the front seat and mom would be tied to the top ! I love watching the two of you, especially if I am drinking a large margarita while I watch! LOL

Your mom has the cutest snort! Love the Asian robes and jacket! Your long tapestry is probably a bell pull that they had in old mansions. It was how they used to call the servants from another room. The bell wasn’t attached to the pull itself, but it would be in the room where servants worked from, usually a kitchen. I don’t know exactly how it worked, I guess the bell would be attached somehow, but not at the pull (tapestry) end. ✌🏼❤️
