Though not representative of full-size practice I like the simplicity of the oscillating cylinder. A pity that it is often not well executed and gets something of a bad press as a consequence. I had not previously thought of the advantage that, should you get a high pressure in a cylinder due to hydraulic lock, the sprung cylinder assembly will just lift off the valve plate and relieve the pressure.

a thankyou for getting back to me,well i steamed it up a few minutes ago,the O ring on the pull down whisle leaks but worse than that ,where the pipe comes out under the boiler is leaking all the water out,seems like i need to strip it down,,where is the best place for O rings please
@modelenthusiasts77525 жыл бұрын
You should have no need to change any O ring or washer. If you have water coming out from where the pipe comes out under the boiler, you need the reassemble the under the dome. I don't understand your whistle problem. Don't confuse the terms O ring and washer - if you have.

Stripped down the mamod,where the smkoe box screws to the boiler has caused the holes s to leak all the water. Under presure

Hi, I like that you are promoting 16mm scale steam railways but I take issue with you saying that this is the most realistic steam engine possible. Oscillating engines were really only used in marine applications. Also, overfilling the boiler and telling people not to worry about it gives the impression that this can be done with all engines. Doing so with any fixed-cylinder engine will cause water lock which can damage our small engines and can be catastrophic in full-size. Please don't let me put you off creating videos like this but please, for the rest of us, be a little more accurate.

So, I've heard a lot of talk from the garden railway community that says you need to upgrade the bejezus out of this engine for it to be any good. Is this true? I'm considering buying one of these for my garden pike, and I was wondering how they perform stock, i.e without any mods? I'm not expecting it to pull everything and the kitchen sink, but it would have to cope with a couple moderate gradients with a couple light wagons in tow.

yes it may require several upgrades to get to the same build as the current mamod locos

My wife has two, but we haven't laid the track yet.

Time to get her to lay the track then? Great weather for it today here.

Sadly we have to finish the house first, and lay the 5" gauge first.
