Mister John Henry was a little baby boy Sittin' on his mama's knee He picked up a hammer and a little piece of steel This hammers gonna be the death of me lordy lord This hammers gonna be the death of me Mister John Henry went up on the mountain He looked down the other side The mountain was so tall, Johnny was so small He let his hammer down and cried lordy lord He let his hammer down and cried Mister John Henry loved a little woman Her name was Polly Ann Oh Johnny got sick and had to go to bed Polly drove the steel like a man lordy lord Polly drove the steel like a man Mister John Henry said to his captain Lord a man ain't nothing but a man But before I'd let your steam drill beat me down I'll die with a hammer in my hand lordy lord I'll die with a hammer in my hand Mister John Henry said to his shaker Said son I guess you better break Or if I should manage this little piece of steel Tomorrow's gonna be the world day lordy lord Tomorrow's gonna be the world day Sorry if this is incorrect, but it's better than the lyrics another user here posted

Great version of John Henry. Hylo's 1959 live version on Earl Scruggs' Classic Blugrass CD is the best I have ever heard!

They really nail the railroad/machine rhythm on this rendition, I love what it adds to the feel of the story.

Hylo and his wife Betty were good family friends, papaw used to drive him to some of his shows and occasionally played banjo for him. Dad got to meet him unfortunately I was born a year after he died, would have loved to meet him in this life.

I had several nice phone conversations with Hylo in the few years before he died. Basically I called him up and introduced myself as a banjo picker and friend of Earl Scruggs;. He was very polite, told me a lot of stories, and even swapped a few tapes of old shows. Wish I could have met him in person, too!

This song still speaks to the higher human purpose of deep meaning. Why are we here? As we face the growth of AI and other technologies that will replace human labor, I come back to this song again and again.

John Henry was a little baby boy, sitting on the his mama's knee Well he picked up a hammer and little piece of steel Said Hammer's gonna be the death of me, lord, lord Hammer's gonna be the death of me. The captain said to John Henry I'm gonna bring that steam drill around I'm gonna bring that sterm drill out on the job I'm gonna whup that steel on down John Henry told his captain Lord a man ain't nothing but a man But before I'd let your steam drill beat me down I'd die with a hammer in my hand John Henry asid to his shaker Shaker why don't you sing Because I'm swinging thirty pounds from my hips on down Just listen to that cold steel ring Now the captain said to John Henry I believe that mountain's caving in John Henry said right back to the captain Ain't nothing but my hammer sucking wind Now the man that invented the steam drill He thought he was mighty fine But John Henry srove fifteen feet The steam drill only made nine John Henry hammered in the mountains His hammer was striking fire But he worked so hard, it broke his poor heart And he laid down his hammerand he died NOw John Henry had a little woman Her name was polly Anne John Henry took sick and had to go to bed Polly Anne drove steel like a man John Henry had a little baby You could hold him in the palm of your hand And the last words I heard that poor boy say My daddy was a steel driving man So every Monday morning When the blue dirds begin to sing You can hear John Henry a mile or more You can hear John Henry's hammer ring

I love Hylo Brown's falsetto in this song. Is this where he got the "Hylo" name from?

Yes

He was on a radio show in Middletown, Ohio and the host, Smoky Ward, couldn't remember his first name when he introduced him and because of his singing style called him High Low Brown. From that moment on, the guys in his band was calling him High Low. Brown decided to switch to that from Frank spelling it "Hylo". When his first single came out on Capitol records in 1954, it says Hylo Brown on the lable.
