I climbed Mt Barney with a few mates in May 2023. Definitely the hardest hike I'd ever done. Scared myself going off-route on the Southeast Ridge, thought I would need to be rescued at one point. Another section had water running down the rock face, with a massive drop to your death if you slipped and fell over the edge. Loved the video, thanks for the memories!

There were definitely some crazy sections during the climb, even more on some of the other technical routes I've heard about. And easy to go off-route. Makes for some good memories at least haha

I climbed Mount Barney today and boy was it a difficult one. My first mountain, we did the same route as you and going up SE ridge was a mental challenge for sure. Countless times where I had to just put my head down and tell myself I’ve got this. Incredible scenery and met some great people

I had a nightmare experience: I got lost on my way to camp at rum jungle on the southeast entry. Started at 9am got lost somewhere around 2pm. Surprise rain hit hard. Fog came in and couldn’t see 3 meters away from my face. Came 11pm. So cold and tired, I needed to take Shelter for the night on a spot with flat ground. Ended up waking up in the morning realising that I’d camped out on the edge of a shear drop down to death. The view in the morning was incredible and I will never forget. However, with the day light I realised that if I had continued down my chosen path I would have slid down a dirt slop leading to a straight drop. (I threw a rock and counted 7 seconds until clatter)

Please never throw rocks over the edge. You don't know who's below. There are climbing routes up the east face. Even a small rock will kill a climber if you hit them. Have had to dodge rocks thrown by hikers above. Not fun!

@@chats5957 i hear you, but when you feel like you’re in a life or death situation you really don’t give a fuck if about that if you’re doing a safety check. Further, I don’t think you read the message at all… or rather you’ve never been to this location. I wouldn’t have been travelling ALONE, stuck on the side of a mountain due to bad weather if they had been anyone else behind me.

I've had a nightmare experience on Mt Barney. It was not either of those tracks but long story short I lost my trail and couldn't get back on track for a long time due to a cliff face. I had to push through brutal dense bush and steep terrain from hell for a very long time and essentially ran out of water (I had 8L) and became dehydrated. When I finally got back to the track I was completely exhausted, had a long way to go still and not much more light left... I could have tried staying another night and I had plenty of food but no water and no stream to filter either so I was worried because I was already dehydrated. In the end I made the call for help. It hurt my pride and I felt embarrassed to be one of the statistics but I'm thankful to have survived. Even with all the right equipment, plenty of food and double the recommended water, this mountain can be dangerous in parts. Some day I'll come back and maybe try these trails instead but I'll do some more chill stuff for a while to get my nerve back.

Wow, that sounds pretty scary. Good on you calling for help, there isn't any point risking your life due to pride. I haven't been in that situation yet luckily.

Did Barney a few years ago, camped overnight in the Rum Jungle and summitted the next morning. Hardest climb I've ever done. The view was spectacular, very, very worth it. We got lost on the way back down, along with two other groups. Working together we found the trail again but it was dicey for a minute lol

Awesome. Not far from where I grew up. Was always on the radar but never got up it though. It had the reputation of being a bit of a daunting hike. Might have to have another look at it when I get back there. No scrub ticks on your trip?

Nice vid, me and my mates climbed SE ridge and slept on mount barney summit last year and, for most of them, was there first hike. It was also raining while we were ascending - but it was a mission and super fun.

SE Ridge up and down is fine if you’re careful. You also get amazing views on the way down that you didn’t necessarily see on the way up cause you’re facing the view more on the way down.

They don't care about barney because... its an effort to get to it. They only care about the busy popular places that average joe's can walk up in 45 minutes like the rock, warning, glass house mountains etc. If there wasn't a road so far up warning and you had to hike an hour to get to the bottom, they would not care one iota.
