MT WASHINGTON WINTER ASCENT During BLIZZARD with Overnight

Hiking up Mt. Washington during winter 2022. Overnighted it outside of Harvard Cabin at the base of the winter Lion's Head Trail outside of Harvard Cabin.

Great job getting out of your comfort zone. Mt Washington and the Whites in general are no joke, one of the sub peaks of Tripyramid North is called The Fool Killer but that really applies to the Whites in general. I hiked Chocorua in March 2017 on a day when it might have topped out around 5F at the trailhead and wind chills were -40 or below at the summit, under a bluebird sky it was stunningly beautiful but you really have to be careful not to sweat in those temps. The only criticism I have to offer is tighten up that tent when you pitch it so there’s no flapping, and open some vents to help with the condensation.

Ive summited Pierce in the whites and some peaks in the ADK in winter. Washington is my next target this winter.

Two friends and I summitted on January 20th, 2022. I'm pretty sure we were the only ones who did so on the Lion's Head that day. It was cold, of course. Winds were steady in the 50s, and gusting into the 70s.....wind chills as low as -40. We descended the Auto Road....that was brutal, due to being exposed. But it was a magnificently clear day. Good times.

Great video! Glad you got the right gear! I want to get more into winter hiking myself. Love the comment that being the first mountain with “no mountaineering experience” 😂. Just subbed! Maybe I’ll come across you on the trails!

Do i need ice axes and crampons if im going in the winter?

It depends on the route you take. Crampons, yes, it's a good idea. You could possibly get by with Hillsound Trail Crapons or Microspikes if the conditions are perfect, but you'll thank yourself for having proper traction like crampons. It can be very icy. Ice axe is debatable from other approaches; a requirement on the Lion Head Winter Route.
