While full screen doors are probably not possible across the system, we can still do platform screen gates at most stations (similar to how tokyo does it)

For platform screen doors to really work, the trains need uniform sizes so they all line up, or a way to line up different trains. As well, a platform large enough to support them. I think these are a good idea for narrower stations like 103rd st on Lex, or islands like 125th for the ABCD, but the MTA really needs to invest in platform screen doors at some point
@ajs11201
@ajs11201 11 ай бұрын
You're suggesting the ideal solution--and I agree--and you also correctly mentioned that before that could happen, all revenue trains that could ever run on a line must have uniform door positions, so that could be many years ahead.

Actually no. There are now solutions of eurher adjustable screen doos, that were installed a few months ago in Japan JR Osaka station. Another option is veryical screen doors, opening upwards along the whole platform length that was tried in a station of Barcelona Metro and a rail station in France. There are also cheaper versions with a mesh like barier, instead of glss going up.

@@AL5520 That's really interesting..... I hope the MTA investigates some of these solutions--they sound like great ideas that could solve a myriad problems and make travel much safe for a lot of New Yorkers.

The MTA operates a mix of 60 foot and 75 foot long train cars, each with 4 doors per-side, this means the spacing between doors varies wildly, making platform screen doors unlikely until the eventual retirement of the last 75 cars sometime in the next decade (maybe).

I think every MTA Subway station should have yellow barriers on their platforms because it could help reduce the risk of accidents, and prevent some passengers from falling into the train tracks into certain death.

Paris, France along with Cities in Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia have full floor to ceiling and half platform screen doors. These doors are designed with wider lengths as where they open, they do so in a wide enough circumference to accommodate different equipment and/or different length of trains along with how a train when it pulls in aligns with the platform. The wider length of the doors may be able to offer flexibility to accommodate different equipment, train lengths and variations of where a train pulls in in the instance of NYC. The MTA could contract with an architect, engineer or designer to create doors with wide versatility to accommodate rotating equipment and train lengths. Wider doors may be an option of the concerns presented by the narrator, Mystic Transit.

Japan still only mostly have half-height platform screen doors. It's good for MTA to start with those as those are easiest to retrofit onto an older system. The doors you're talking about are also best fit for half-height platform screen doors. Very few places have doors that can accommodate multiple train types and full height platform screen doors. Idk about Korea but after travelling through Japan I've only seen them once at a brand new terminal in Osaka Station (opened in mid-2023), with none in China (I lived in China for 6 years). And I can't imagine the Osaka doors came cheap because they don't even have them installed on every platform there, with some using the old half-height design. 2nd Avenue subway and all future stations should be designed with full-height platform screen doors and standard trains, however.

The rolling stock of the MTA would be an issue though. It varies from IRT to BMT and IND lines and some platforms are shorter while others are longer. It would be a while before we see proper screen doors on the MTA.

The big barrier with true platform edge doors that line up with the train doors is, as mentioned here, a lack of standard door placement and car length in the fleet. It’s especially bad on the B division (lettered lines) as the train cars themselves are actually not the same length throughout the fleet, and will be that way for the next several years at least.

These can't be installed at stations used by both 60 and 75 foot cars. It's a total non-starter. I assume for West 8th Street, only the F platforms are getting them. For IRT stations, I think the door layouts of the R62/A and the R142/A are similar enough to allow the installation of these barriers, but full platform screen doors can't be installed until every train serving a station has the exact same door layout.

I can see where they're coming from, it's for the spaces in between cars when the train is stopped, but fitting the entire system with floor-to-ceiling doors is something we shouldn't be spending money on tbh, there are more important things like tunnel infrastructure, signaling, trackwork, etc.

I actually kinda like how these are nothing more than fences bolted onto the floor. It makes for temporary solutions until, for example, R46s and R68s are ready to be replaced with more new trains. I also think that the door positions are close enough on A division trains that these barriers will work decently at any platform. My bigger concern is stations with columns against the edge, like this one. By the way, what's new with the platform screen door pilot?

People aren’t being logical expecting state of the art platform screen doors on a system that’s hundred years old.. I mean this is not the best but it’s definitely a start. In order for MTA to have proper screen doors they would have rehabilitate and rebuild most of their underground platforms. A lot of the platforms wouldn’t be able to accommodate screen doors for many reasons. PLUS the rolling stock of the MTA isnt all the same. From 7 line using R188s and having 11 cars to 1 line using R62As. Also just putting screen doors on platforms would look odd and weird it would need to be pleasing to the eyes and compliment the station platform aside from being efficient. I definitely think it was a major fail they didn’t implement screen doors during phase 1 of the second avenue subway. I hope phase 2 they really implement it. If there’s any subway line that will get actual platform screen doors it probably would be the L as it’s fully deinterlined as well as it being a busy line.

I don't think the R142 vs. R62 is a big issue, since as far as I know the numbers and spacings of the doors are the same, just where they are relative to the front of the car, so this could be solved by having two different stop markers. But the 60-foot vs. 75-foot car issue is more complicated since the number of doors and their spacings are different.

I think that the platform screen doors will become a reality starting with the L or the 7, which have a unique type of train EXCLUSIVE to the lines (L = R143 and the 7=R188). The MTA will unlikely implement platform screen doors on lines that still have SMEE trains (e.g. Broadway Line and 6 Avenue Line). But I do think that the letter lines will get this new implementation first. The R46s are already being the retired and the R62/A along with the R68/As will begin retirement in 10 years. During those 10 years, CBTC will be implemented on the Crosstown Line as well as 6th Avenue, bringing R160s to the B and D trains. . However, the 8th Avenue Line will get the Platform screen doors only on SELECTED stations. Stations with de-interlining such as Columbus Circle won't get Platform Screen doors since the (B) and (D) will have their stock of R68s still be in use. And probably one station will get platform screen doors each month, making this 20 years long :( - I do hope that the MTA will make this faster since people falling onto the tracks has always been an issue.
