I got used to Camelbaks in the Marine Corps, and I still use them while hiking or riding. I prefer riding without it, but I like not being dehydrated more. If I am doing the local loop when it isn't hot, I can get away with no water, (Or just a bottle on the bike,) but for the long days and the hot climbs, I have to have the water. If you're a park rat or shuttle monkey, maybe you don't need one. For those of us that earn our turns or ride all day, a bottle won't cut it. I also hate mounting extra shit on my bike. On bike storage has improved a lot since the 80s, but I still associate on bike storage with products that scratch up your paint, bounce around, and eventually dump your gear off the side of a trail. I like the hip packs, but they aren't fat kid friendly. I have found that Camelbak's ultra runner packs are more comfy than some of the bike stuff. And if some trendslave endurbroh gets wound up about my choice of gear, that just makes me happier.

Yaaaaay I am not the only 1 who doesn't like strapping stuff to my bike, kinda hard to find these days. I have that Evoc pack and tho I might not be super fat or anything I am still no slim guy by any means and it fits me quite well, but yes it can be a bit annoying at times (excuse my wording here) depending on what roll it is resting on.

I use camelback and the main reason I didn't switch to bottle in races is that bottle likes to get out of cage (i've seen many bottles lost on start of race which is not nice for owners when it is very hot). Bottles used to get dirty more often and it is harder to get to water in bottle when u are riding gnarly trails - camelbacks are a lot of easier and if u put tube in mouth u are not involving hands any more while drinking. But in races most peaople use bottles - maybe they don't like fealing of having sweat on thair backs.

I personally don't like strapping stuff to my bike, I dunno I'd probably damage/puncture or lose it during a crash. I used to use a 16L backpack with a 2L bladder. Then after some back issues and realizing my backpack barely has anything in it and I usually come back with plenty water left in my bladder I switched to a hip pack, that exact evoc pack you showed in the video actually. I LOVE IT! It has plenty space for my essentials (and then some), the 1,5L bladder paired with a 750ml bottle on my bike gives me PLENTY water for a couple hours. The pack for me also sits better than my full backpack, it's less wobbly and leaves my back way less sweaty and sore. At this point I really don't care what people say about my hip pack, it's nice and it makes my bike look nicer not having silly stuff strapped to it.

Hydrate packs not only carry water, tools, pump, supplies and jacket if needed, they also protect your back and some have impact pads. Riding without a pack is lighter and it's nice to have your tools strapped or hidden on your bike but if you have a few bikes that could be complicated. Try putting a tube, tools, Co2 and your phone in a jersey back pocket and hit some rough descents, I think you might change your mind about that. The bottom line, a H-pack is an easy way to have everything you need for a ride in 1 place and ready for riding any of your Mtn bikes.

I bought it because I was racing XC in N.C. and back then the XC course were not built by roadies. So they were tight twisty and had roots, rocks and fallen trees(one race I remember after pre ride the promoter went and cut down a tree as a surprise for us) everywhere . Back to my point there was no time to reach for a bottle . The hose was so much easier and now you can put tools, food, TP and first aid kit in your pack! ARWYP (always ride with your pack)!!

And an insulated 24oz water bottle with Lezyne cage, that has never fallen out. And an IPhone in my pocket for all the instagram clips. But I’m also never afraid to bust out the hip back for longer rides when you need snacks and more water. I strongly believe they’re the best option if you absolutely need a pack, but honestly most people don’t. They just carry too much stuff for an hour or two long ride.

Sounds like a dialed set up. :)

Hydration pack loaded when I’m out for more than 2 hours, scouting new stuff, or doing some trail cleanup. For the usual lunch and after work rides I rely on my backcountry research strap to have my back with the essentials just in case. It’s nice to have the bike ready to go and one less accessory to think about in order to get rolling.

That seems to be the way most of the guys at the shop roll. Thanks for watching! :)

Worldwide Cyclery thanks for the shout! But... should have given backcountry research straps a shout out in the video... they totally rock and lots of knock offs are trying to get in on the action... you know you love them, c’mon!

Henty Enduro Backpack for the win!! 3l of water if you need it. Plenty of room for the essentials and no sweaty back...and you CG kept low on top of it.

Running the All in One multitool and a water bottle, sucks that it’s on the outside of my down tube though. Switched to this setup after using a small Evoc hydration pack for a while, I love the freed up range of motion!

So what I do is I strap all my stuff to the outside of my hydration pack then buckle my hip pack over my face and then I carry my bike up the hill and then I eat my water bottle. that is how I have the best rides.

Ready? He's way ahead of the game! It wouldn't be fair to allow him in the EWS.

Besides carrying water food tools and essentials hydration packs are great for spine protection. Love my EVOC 12L i crashed in sedona and it saved my back in a rocky section. Clown me all u want but I like the protection and ease of use👍

I've been using a camelback bum bag for 2 years now and I absolutely swear by it can carry everything you need for upto a full days ride without any annoying shoulder straps

I do have an Osprey 3L hydration pack and kinda wanted to have a bigger one so that I can put more essentials! Imagine climbing with a little to no H20! Hydration pack plus a bottle cage (in case your buddies forgot theirs or just too lazy to bring one). It’s a life saver!

I've used one for YEARS...not gonna stop any time soon.

hydration pack is always the best option for me

Screw minimalism, I have the tool or spare I need for everything short of a broken frame or rim, *and* get to pull a cold sixer out mid-ride. Hell, one time I surprised my buddies with a box of donuts at the top.

Dehydration is DORKY! I ALWAYS have my slim line small hydro pack on me when riding or even snowboarding after way too many times out riding being cotton mouthed and BONKING due to not enough hydration. Depending on temp and ride time or difficult climbs, I usually carry 1.5-2.5 liters. Also in my pack is a grumpy session worth of TP, crank bros multi tool, 4 short and 3 long zip ties, pump, tube, 4 tire irons & patch kit, spare derailleur hanger, and lightweight tire pressure gauge. I strap the race face pads on for the climbs. I really like being able to grab tube, bite drink and keep on the go, not having to stop, clear the gunk and mud off the bottle, wasting time just to get a drink. Just last week I used my hydro pack to wash some sweat caked dirt off my face and forehead after taking an impromptu "soil sample". Nothing dorky about staying hydrated whatever method you use. I could give a rats butt what "the pros" do. I do what works for me. Happy rolling.

Helped 3 in the last 15 rides or so. And helped myself with zip tie for a snapped hanger to coast back down the hill to the rig.

Dorky? No. Heavy, hot and cumbersome, yes. I’m watching your video to make the transition from a pack, to frame mounted stuff.
@Workhorse-ef8mv6 жыл бұрын
I ll go with Hydration pack because I carry crash gear for the way down and want to stay hydrated, as well as have extra water just in case. It also serves as protection for your back if you head over the handle bars and end up on your back! Ben there, done that, walked/road away. No school like old school.

What's dorky is having to replace all your stuff because people keep stealing it off your bike when you go for burgers and beer after a ride.

Hydration Pack all the way 👍 I'm wearing the osprey raptor 14 (perfect set up for me) 😉
