Wairoa Gorge: Screaming Turtle to Stephen | MTB Trail Magic

We finally got to Wairoa Gorge MTB Park near Nelson, New Zealand. It was built by an American billionaire in 2010, then gifted to the Department of Conservation in 2019, with the Nelson MTB Club to help administer the public access.
We started the morning off with some Grade 4 (Advanced) trails. Screaming Turtle has lots of roots which would be fine in the dry, but after the ridiculous amount of rail the day before, was sketchy at best. At the end of Screaming Turtle is a short stretch of Bermed As (Grade 3) and then on to Stephen, which is a more peddly trail at the start and leads into slippery black rock features. Beautiful surroundings for sure. Trails aren't too shabby either 😄. Can't get a break with the wet stuff though. Seems every time we go on a bike trip is rains heavily. 🤷‍♂️
