I just went from a sb4.5 to trail 429. I wanted to get something new with xtr build instead of the x01 kit on my Yeti. I know it’s a different comparison but I agree with the pedaling efficiency of the yeti, and more planted / less poppy playfulness of the 429. For me, the plushness and confidence when bombing rough downhills on the 429 makes it worth the switch for me.

@@mtbyumyum I think that came through in the video. It's tough to be perfectly articulate and say exactly whats on your mind every single day! When you were talking about how both descend well and resist bottoming it sounded like they're pretty similar and the differences were more apparent when climbing and popping out of corners with the Yeti feeling a little more efficient and slightly firmer in the shock travel.
@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum Жыл бұрын
Bingo. Good! The Ripley is the outlier in a conversation about the yeti, pivot and ibis 120mm bikes... and not in a bad way. The pivot and yeti are just more similar when compared to the ibis.... with the yeti being slightly closer to the ripley in feel and trail manners although the ripley really doesn't feel anything like the pivot where the yeti sort of does. If this hasn't confused you, nothing will. hahaha

Thanks again for another great review. Your reviews are so good and Pivot is such a great company I wouldn't be suprised if they had someone tuned in here to take feedback to Chris. So... despite sounding like a broken record I'm going to say it again.... I think Pivot should marry the Switchblade and 429 and do a 130mm out back and 150 up front. The 150mm up front, IMO gives you a much nice feeling fork in fork in something like a Lyric compared to a Pike or 34 with little weight penalty. Both models fall between XC and enduro so there's a lot of overlap. And to add I think that 429 in silver with its really nice lines is the best looking bike out there. Pivot is so great with customer service and quality of frames to boot. If they had a 130/150 sold as a frame alone it would be my next bike. For my last bike I almost got a Switchblade but could get a frame only option.

You might be onto something. Especially with how capable the mach4 SL is. I always thought that bike punched above its weight. We’ll see what happens. In my experience, the trail 429 and the switchblade are so close and so similar with geometry that I could totally see your point in this idea.

@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's interesting because the Sb100/115 were never in the conversation with the Following or the Tallboy... those are the two 120mm bikes that really blur the lines of bigger more capable trail bikes like the Pivot Switchblade and the Ibis Ripmo. The new SB120 is much more that speed and ability for sure... weight it there too. That said, the geo is just different enough that anyone willing to go up to the 27-28 pound range should be taking a long look at the Following, Tallboy and Ripmo(with fox 36/fox float x)

@MTByumyum Another great video, thanks! You mentioned the Ibis Ripley during the comparison, which I appreciate as it has kind of become your 'control' bike to compare everything to. When you said the Ibis was probably your favorite 120mm trail bike it made me think of the Rocky Mountain Element you had awhile back. You seemed to really love that bike and I was wondering, what happened to it (you haven't mentioned it in a while)? How does it compare to the Yeti and the Pivot?
@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum Жыл бұрын
Great question. I ended up selling the element because it sort of felt like a short travel ibis Ripmo. The reason why I mentioned the Ripmo was because at the time I had sold the Ripley and picked up an Exie to go along with my Ripmo. In situations where I didn’t need a ton of travel, I would rather be on my Exie instead of the element and in times where I needed a bit more bike I would rather be on the Ripmo instead of the element. It was just bad timing with the other bikes that I already had at the time. Overall, it was a very good bike. Had similar support to the Yeti but maybe a little less control. Really fun geo on the Element too if it’s your only bike. I apologize, not everything in these comments will translate through to exactly what I’m saying. Maybe we should do another live stream😆🤦🏻‍♂️

Thanks for your thoughts/comparisons on the Trail 429. I'm 205 lbs, 5' 10", on a large T429 Enduro and I agree with what you say about it being plush and feeling like a bigger, more capable bike. I'm a hardtail lover, but it's fun to have a different experience on the trail and a bike for trips. Although I enjoy riding the 429, my Pipedream Moxie HT is more efficient, responsive, and more fun for the stuff I ride 90% of the time. My local trails in San Diego, out my front door, are very similar to yours and I just love the direct power transfer and feel. I'm surprised you don't try a HT on your trails. I bet you'd like the Ibis DV9. Based on this video and liking HT's, I think I MIGHT prefer the Yeti, BUT I like the trunion mount shock and looks of the Pivot and I'm okay with it not being my most efficient bike. Fun to have options. Thanks for your channel.

A day riding can’t get much better than riding those 3 bikes. I’m on the trail 429 enduro and I ride the rear suspension at the red line which is higher pressure, and stiffer which I love uphill and the 36 is beefy downhill on drops and rock gardens. Not as supple. Very efficient.

It seems that Yeti basically built a Me Too bike trying to compete with the Trail 429 & other great short-travel trail bikes. I'd still choose the Trail429 because you don't have to change the way you ride like you do with Yetis. Supposedly the SB120 is more neutral compared to their other bikes but it's hard to deviate from your DNA too much. For the money, the fit & finish of Pivot is better than Yetis, up there with Santa Cruz. Of all the short-travel trail bikes, the Trail429 is the closest to the plushness/capability of the Tallboy downhill but a faster climber and very maneuverable. If I wanted more speed uphill and am willing to sacrifice that little bit of capability downhill, I'd skip this Yeti and go for the BC40 for that kind of money. It's a lot lighter & more maneuverable.

Yeah, I agree with you. In as much as I really like the SB120 (everyone's making good bikes these days) I would have a really hard time personally skipping out on the T429 or Ibis Ripley with very similar geo. If down hill is more your thing the Tallboy always has slightly more progressive geo then the others listed and is a highly capable and fun bike to ride... The Pivot Trail 429 really is the goldilocks of the short travel trail bikes!!

I would say the sb120 and sb130 both feel more efficient than the T429. But the sb130 is a very different bike from the T429

Thank you for the great video. I'd value your input on my first world conundrum. I have an SB100 and love love love it! I also have the Trail 429 which I like but am not 100% in love with like the SB100. I have an opportunity to pick up an SB120 frame and thought of swapping everything off the 429. My concern is expecting the SB120 to be just like the SB100; fun and poppy. The 429 is great but in a word, I consider it "unassuming". Do you think it would be worth the aggravation of swapping everything or would the SB120 and 429 be similar enough that it's a waste of time? I know it could come down to preference but any insights are appreciated.

Yeah, the SB120 won't give you what you're looking for... I strongly encourage you to look at (and buy) the Ibis Ripley! It will give you everything you love about your SB100 but in a more "trail" worth package... what the sb100 lacks the Ripely has in spades and what you adore about the sb100 the Ripley does even better! I promise you won't be disappointed. Call Chris at Salt Cycles and get hooked up with the current running YUMYUM deal!! 801-943-8502

I know it can be difficult just looking up the geo numbers on different bikes online.... the t429, sb120 and ripley all looks so similar on paper but they're really very different... if you like the sb100... you'll love the ripley! I absolutely loved my sb100 and the ripley was such and easy natural progressing from that bike!

$4,300 for a Yeti frame has to be the highest frame price on planet Earth. As a certified bike snob, that is even too much for me. Pivot stopped selling frames and went to 157mm hubs which for someone who likes to move wheels around between bikes is a non-starter. Back to IBIS I go for reasonable prices and a 148 hub!!!

Yeah, you're not wrong... Ibis still has reasonable pricing and excellent bikes!

I keep thinking that most of these ~120mm rear travel bikes would better with 140mm fork and more progressive geometry. If your already riding a 130mm Fox 34 fork, going for 140mm Fox 34 doesn't seem unreasonable. When it comes to geo, I find a 77* STA and 65* HTA about ideal for all around trail riding.

You're not wrong. I agree to a certain extent... for the non competitive rider looking to do a handful of cx or marathon type races these bikes are still very good options.

But adding a larger fork with shorten the reach, slack the STA and HTA. Geometry trumps suspension design because all these brands have killer stuff.

@@frienduro24 I'm not talking about adding a longer fork to a bike that isn't designed for it. I taking about the bike being specifically design with a 140mm fork, a 77* STA, and 65* HTA. In addition, no bikes geometry is going to be adversely affected by installing a fork that is 10mm shorter or longer than the stock fork. 10mm just isn't that much change. People do this all the time and many report that it improves the bike.

@@frienduro24 Adjust your stack height and saddle. Maybe get some lower rise bars. I went from a 140 mm Fox 34 to a RS Pike 150 on my Stumpjumper. The bike feels better than ever.

@@petedog9581 I always felt that the Stumpy would be a better bike with a 150mm Pike or Fox 36.

This video put me in awkward position. Thought Pivot was far better than Yeti….yeti doesn’t have that annoying superboost, but at least here in Europe far more expensive than Pivot. There is only frame option though, so I can re-use couple of good set of wheels…tough choice

One thing to note: Trail 429 shock tune is medium and Ripley is light. I think that’s why the Ripley feels more playful.
