Do you need any special tools to make the job easier? Like a stubby hex head or a short stubby hex socket?

Pretty much everything I showed you is all you need. I would recommend getting a long socket for the passenger side since the round nipple part pops out so a short socket wouldn't work their but also making sure it's not to thick of a socket since the space there is limited. For the driver side an Allen key worked but if I would do it again maybe finding one that's a bit shorter so you can have more space to turn it.

planning on doing this while changing my transmission fluid. I have the STI short throw as well, did this make a difference on how it feels when shifting?

I noticed shifting gears felt a bit smoother nothing crazy but definitely worth the money.

Getting ready to do the install. Question though: does the shifter springs install effectively eliminate the need to update the shifter itself? Wanting to know if I still need to be adding a short throw shifter like a Billetworks down the road?

The shifter springs won't make your shifts shorter all they do is make the shifting smoother and more precise. I have an STI short shifter in my car.

Won’t eliminate the need but it will make it shift even better. Get the short shifter

This mod is too risky for me. People have had problems with killing the threads and difficulty clearing out threadlock to get the bolt back in.

That's how I felt I had them sitting for 2 months before sending it. As long as you clean the threads good there shouldn't be an issue. That pick tool really helped clean out the threadlocker.
