I was looking for this comment! So good. One time I played a rootborn defenses to save/populate the twins (and some other stuff) from an Akroma's Vengeance... I don't think I've ever seen a table scoop that fast xD... A couple of the new Embalm/Eternalize guys are great in this deck too. Populating an Angel of Sanctions token over and over is quite gross..

Yeah but you have to make it to 10 mana, and then wait a turn to be able to attack with your 10/10's. By this time everyone else should have a pretty intense board state out too and the game may have advanced beyond the point where 10/10 big beaters could really win

Aww I remember when I watched your videos over and over, just daydreaming about getting my tips together to build one of your decks. Today I have 52 built decks and I have played EDH at least weekly nonstop. To this day, Ephara continues to be one of my favorite decks thanks to you. This is a sort of inspiring deck explanation because I don't intend to run a Selesnya deck, but a Naya token deck with Trostani in it. I have seen cards like Enlightened Tutor, Aura Shards, and Growing Ranks. But, the cards, Eldameri's Call, Sterling Grove, and Loxodon Hierarch are mind-blowing. Worthy of consideration! I loved Trostani since it first came out, and built a commander deck around her at the same time. Our lists are very different, as I've focused more on Trostani's Populate ability, and filled the deck with bigger tokens. You still gain a lot of life, but I've found it helps the deck stay proactive, and makes the individual cards more threatening. Good list professor! Love this segment!

Excuse me Professor, but I want to add to your advice to play Archangel oft Thune that there is also a lifegain Combo with it which I also did play for quite a long time. The Combo consists of Archangel of Thune and Spike Feeder. Spike Feder enters the battlefield for 3 mana (double green) and with 2 +1/+1 Counters in it. You can remove one counter to gain 2 life. I think you See where this is going with Archangel of Thune ...

Some great additions: Tornado (a greatly overlooked card for life-gain decks) Séance - Similar to Mimic Vat, but cheaper and can be used each upkeep Rootborn Defenses - Great anti-wrath/ and populate! Phyrexian Rebirth (speaking of wraths) Phyrexian Processor - Spend 40 life an get it all back on the first activation Gargoyle Castle and Wingmate Roc make 3/4 fliers Sylvan Library is a great way to use extra life Terastadon - tokens and removal!

wow this is awesome. I have special love for Trostani Selesnya's Voice, I started playing back in RTR and my first deck was a Selesnya Intro Pack, when I opened my packs my surprise was! A Trostani! dude I love that card. A friend from college also plays Selesnya and everytime we talk he asks me to sell her lol we're from Venezuela so we didn't have a LOT of money to burn on cards, but we had a LOT of kitchen table fun, the sad part is that I did not have the money to buy card sleeves at the time so the card now is kinda damaged, we call her "Trostani The Old Woman" (Trostani La Vieja, in spanish) and the other Trostani i was able to get wich is NM we call her "Trostani The Young" (Trostani La Joven, in spanish), sadly for money issues we could not buy more cards after RTR block rotated out, but up until last year we had great games everytime we joined.

I built a trostani deck a while back and it's slowly becoming my favorite deck so im putting more money into it with a voice of resurgence and a savanna plus the complete mana base. But this did give me some new ideas for my deck So thanks professor :D

This is one of my 2 pet favorite commanders (with Lazav, Dimir Mastermind). I can recall a game in which my board-state consisted of: Trostani, Selesnya's Voice, Intangible Virtue, Luminarch Ascension, and Darien, King of Kjeldor. It was a really sweet "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation (for my opponents).

Great video as always professor! When i see trostani decks like these i always make the same suggestion. Add a Darien and pain lands to your deck, the early life lose from pain lands will be minor since you got trostani all game long and when you hit darien your pain lands gain full value from there on.

Just some fun cards for this to add would be Dragonlord Dromoka, good 6 cost that prevents any opponent from interacting with you on your own turn, with the additional lifelink and flying keywords that really shine in this deck; and sunscorch regent, a solid 5 cost that gets stronger and gains life every spell your opponents cast. Speaking of Dragons, while the preconstructed Ur-dragon was fun I'd like to see a crack at a stronger build if it exists.

Great guide, I especially like the introduction! I like the list a lot actually it has a good mix of answers. The only thing I would try to add is Karmic Justice. It's a great way to prevent people from using mass destruction carelessly. But then again my playgroup is fond of 'mass destruction', so maybe it's not needed.

I built this deck with a few modifications (due to budget). It's very, VERY good, I do recommend. The ramp is fast if you draw well enough, and the ridiculous Wurm token generation plus the lifegain can double your life in no time. Great moves, keep it up, papa Urza bless.

I've been playing with Trostani as my commander for three months and I must admit that Phyrexian Processor in my starting hand + Trostani + Seedborn Muse is absolutely beautiful life gain and creature generation. Add to that a parallel lives or doubling season, aura shards, and an Illusionist's Bracers on Trostani and he becomes absolutely ridiculous.

I have a EDH deck similar to this once. Instead of Trostani, I use Selvala. Selvala is cheaper to play and has a nice effect. It's goes great in mutliplayer EDH games. I do like the "win by life" aspect of this deck. I think I'm going to change my EDH a little bit to include some of the cards mentioned in this video. Thanks for sharing.

I'd love to see an updated version of this deck since cards like Hanweir Militia Captain from Shadows Over Inistrad, Anointed Processions and eternalize cards from Amonkhet, and Growing Rites of Itilimoc from Ixalan came out. On a separate note, I think Llanowar Mentor could make for an honorable mention for a Trostani deck as well because of the low cost for a Llanowar Elves token generator (Paired with Parallel Lives, Anointed Processions, and/or doubling season for 2-8 Llanowar Elves when discarding 1 land). Elixir of Immortality, Crucible of Worlds, Ramunap Excavator, Anhk of Mishra would play well with Llanowar Mentor. Either play lands from your graveyard or punish your opponent for playing lands while you still get a mana rock creature each turn. Exile Llanowar Mentor with Mimic Vat to populate and play multiple Llanowar Elves each turn, meanwhile Elixir of Immortality puts your graveyard back into your library. Because sometimes Selesnya plays a little like Golgari.

Seraph of the Masses? A flying creature with power and toughness equal to the number of creatures you control is absurd in a deck that makes as many tokens as this one does. Seraph also has Convoke -- so she's a free X/X flier. There is also Pennon Blade, an equipment which gives a creature +1/+1 for every creature you control. If equipped to a creature with Trample it wins the game on the spot. Both cards existed at the time this video was published. Today, this deck has cards available like: Evra, Halcyon Witness: With as much life gain as this deck has, Evra can eliminate someone on the spot if they are unable to block her or if she gains trample. She has the ability to trade her power (base is 4) against your life total (which can easily be 100+), while also having Lifelink. If Evra connects while you have a high life total you instantly end the player she connects with. Angelic Exaltation: This enchantment gives any creature that attacks alone +X/+X where X is your creature count. This can be used either with a creature with trample or evasion to hit someone really hard, or it can be used for Trostani herself to attack for instant lethal with commander damage. Divine Visitation: This enchantment makes it so every time you would generate a token, you instead generate a Serra Angel. While this has some anti-synergy with Mimic Vat, Serra Angel is superior to almost every token you would generate. Most token generation creates 1/1, 2/2, or similar size tokens. Visitation makes them become 4/4s with flying and vigilance. March of the Multitudes: March has convoke and costs XWWG to make X 1/1 tokens with lifelink. Nylea, God of the Hunt: All creatures you control have trample. Works very well with Exaltation, Seraph of the Masses (and her similars Crusader of Odric, Shanna, Sisay's Legacy and Worldsoul Colossus), and Evra. Resplendent Angel: Generate a Serra Angel every turn that you gain at least 4 life. If you get someone chumping your exalted creature with Angelic Exaltation, use someone with Lifelink to build a board of Serra Angels. Gideon's Company: A pumped-up version of Ajani's Pridemate. Altar of the Brood: A clever, sneaky way to win the game by making tons of tokens as well as a denial of resources for your opponents.

I would like to see a blue/black zombie EDH Grimgrin deck. Maybe you could focus on zombie token generation or see how much control you can squeeze out of the blue side of the house. You need cathar's crusade. It is a must have for this deck, and a very crazy enchantment to have when you are overwhelming them with tokens. A very key card that would slide easily into this deck.

To keep Felidar Sovereign on the board, I would add a few of the cards from the UW Heroic deck, like Gods Willing, Valorous Stance or Ajani's Presence. Since it's not a creature-light deck, any combination of these cards would probably find multiple uses, depending on what strategy you go for, and they're all low-cost as well, so you can easily throw any one of them into the mix at almost any point during the game without sacrificing much momentum.

I'd like to see a five-color allies deck. Right now I have one with a good set of creatures, all rally-based, and I use cloudshift, parralax wave and other cards like them to trigger rally when I don't have a creature to cast, but with five colors to choose from, I don't know what Support/utility/removal spells I should be putting in. If you could do a five colors allies video, that'd be great!

i've wanted to build a Daretti, scrap savant deck for edh for a while now. obviously the pre-built commander starter deck would be a huge help to getting started, but there are so many artifacts in magic and so many ways of building an artifact deck, even when only mono-red, that it's a little overwhelming, not to mention it can be expensive for some of the best artifacts (even if being mono-colour means the deck is cheaper than most commander decks). i'd like to see what you could do with a Daretti artifact deck professor.

I'm a huge fan of Cathars' Crusade in Tokens, as something like a Martial Coup, Increasing Devotion, Decree of Justice, White Sun Zenith or Conqueror's Pledge makes your board absolutely bananas (Especially if you manage to sneak in a Doubling Season). Another card would have to be Beast Within for it's overall utility (Or making a 3/3 Beast in a pinch).

My favorite interaction with Trostani is phyrexian processor. Not only do you get all the life back as soon as the first token, but you can keep making massive tokens and gaining life.
