I especially agree with the part where he mentioned that mono-red is always a thing in every standard rotation, but blue is not. The only thing keeping blue's head above water (pun intended) is devotion, and even then it doesn't see many tier 1 wins. So what happens when Theros rotates? Meanwhile mono green and mono black devotion see a lot of tier 1 play. Mono red is competitive while still cheap for new players. Mono blue is neither. Notice the problem here?

First off. Blue is without a doubt the most powerful color in legacy. And remains an important color in modern. Treasure cruise was insanely overpowered. It pushed delver to become 20% of the modern format. Right next to pod with an equal share. Cruise was so good it made that jank pile of 12-16 1 or 2 drops and a bunch of bad cantrips into a deck that could compete with pod. And wheres delver now? Practically dead. You CAN counter combos on turn 2. Spell pierce, dispell, mana leak, negate, remand, logic knot, even fringe counters like rune snag. Those are all good cards with varying degrees of play in multiple formats. The absence of a mono blue deck is NOT the absence of a powerful blue deck. If you say modern junk is a GBW deck your wrong. It's a variation of GB midrange that splashes white. Scapeshift and twin are blue combo/control decks that splash for combo pieces and removal. Miracles is an EXTREMELY powerful blue based control deck in legacy. Just because you cant sleeve up at least 16 islands for your mana base doesnt mean it isnt a "true" blue deck. Dont forget either, that burn is rarely mono red in modern. And thats BURN. If burn isnt mono red then of course control isn't mono blue! Even the fringe deck 'skred red' which relies in many ways on a large number of basic mountains often splashes for other colors. The problem isnt that blue is weak, but that fetchlands are insane. Blue doesnt have good creatures. That surprises you? Have you forgotten the color pie? Blue has (with some exceptions) always had the worst creatures. Since the games inception. And in any case they get things (with white) like geist of Saint traft and celestial collonade. Not to mention snapcaster. And to ACTUALLY defend mental misstep. The thing was a disaster. Because almost every deck in legacy and modern ran so many 1 drops, and misstep itself was a 1 drop. Turn 1 devolved into cast a 1-drop and then both players discard all their missteps and take that much damage x2. Maybe the 1 drop was counteted, maybe it wasnt. It was opressive and didnt function properly as a blue spell or a counter. The only ban mentioned that wasnt well founded was dig through time. But in their defense cruise was truly insane and scared the shit outta em. Dig still outta been allowed 2 months to see if it was safe.

Well it is true that a 2 mana blue true counterspell would probably break modern. Remand is very often used and while it is a true counter, it returns it to its owners hand. A simple hardcounter(for 2) would be too much i guess.

Right now WOTC is more concerned with creatures being cast not so much instant and sorcery spells. This can be seen in control decks in Standard right now. One of the most anticipated control cards in Theros Block was, "what is the new four mana wrath going to look like," the format never got that card, so the same question was asked in the KTK/FRF "where is the four mana wrath effect". This is also seen in the recent banning of the card Birthing Pod WOTC stated, "Each year, new powerful options are printed... playing Pod suppresses decks, especially other creature decks", DCI banned list update direct quote. Essentially WOTC is saying they want to print cool powerful creature cards, but are too afraid a card like Birthing Pod will abuse these cards. I would expect to see more powerful creatures in the next couple of sets and less powerful instant and sorcery speed cards while the powerful instant and sorcery spells to be printed in supplement products, for example MM2015 and Duel Decks. MaRo said mill is the main mechanic for blue, if you listen to this podcast he says exactly this media.wizards.com/2014/podcasts/magic/drivetowork185_blueblack.mp3

Good Mono blue creatures I pulled off the top of my head by their CMC. 1:Delver of Secrets, Triton Shorestalker and Flying Man/(Faerie Miscreant) 2:Fog Bank 3:Guard Gomazoa 4:Elite Arcanist 5:(nothing immediately comes to mind, I'm not looking any of these up) 6:Magosi Sphinx 7:Tromokrasis 10: Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur 11: Polar Kraken. Yes, Polar Kraken. I stand by this card being one of the blue beaters that stands the test of time, even when brought in early with things like Show and Tell. The fact that a card that costs 11, and has cumulative upkeep of sac a land still stands so high in my eyes I feel is not an issue on my behalf, but that of the power level of blue creatures, which reinforces this video's point (or at the very least pulls a little truth from the satire).

Ah, great series. (Just some flaws in the content: When was monoblue playable: Well, quite often. Does it have good creatures: Well mostly not, but the Snapcasters and Delvers accumulate in non rotating formats.) Otherwise he is absolutly correct: If we must endure turn 3 combos in modern, we should also be able to handle a counterspell.
@matthewgragg21524 жыл бұрын
He does have a good point about a good blue creature for early game. Other colors have good/decent flying creatures for 3 or less mana, but for blue a flying creature with the same power and toughness seems to always cost more mana for some reason, even with no extra abilities.

I wholeheartedly believe that Jace, the Mind Sculptor should be unbanned in Modern. It is a PERFECTLY balanced Card for the Modern Format, yet people are afraid of how good it was in ZEN Standard, and how good it is in Eternal Formats, but those AREN'T the same as Modern. Also, Bloodbraid Elf, she was banned mostly because of her partner in crime, Deathrite Shaman, without him, she isn't as overpowered and should potentially come off the list as well. And honestly, Counterspell could be reprinted, the double Blue Cost would prevent its splash-ability and use/consistency in 3-Colour Decks, so it'd open up the Meta for some Mono-Blue or Ux Decks.. But then we'd see a lot more Filter Lands in Blue Decks potentially, but I don't see why that's a bad thing. :P I can picture Counterspell being reprinted in Zendikar, maybe even Origins.. Jace tMS and Counterspell would open up a Mono-Blue Deck that ISN'T Tempo or Tron -based in Modern, and bring different kinds of Control Decks into the Format. Worst case, they just ban Counterspell if it proves too powerful. (Jace wouldn't though.)

So many one and two mana removal spells are everywhere in every color but blue. We've got Path, Bolt, Dismember etc. They're everywhere. And think about how powerful all of those cards are. I vote we have a blue counterspell that takes inspiration from one of the most powerful removal spells ever - Abrupt Decay. UU/1U/BU (whatever) - Instant: Counter target spell with converted mana cost 3 or less. It would become a modern staple over night, it's not overpowered, and it's just the kind of thing blue needs in Modern. Come at me Wizards.

While I don't think reprinting Counterspell would break the meta. Making Mono Blue powerful enough in Standard would. There would be two ways to beat it, by outproducing, it and by splashing Blue yourself to have a Counter battle. Most people would be forced to splash blue because outproducing it isn't reliable enough to beat it consistently. It's meta-breaking when they make it too powerful. Blue might not be the one of the best Mono-Colors, but it's one of, if not the, best colors to splash/pair with for a 2 colored deck.
@nelsonchandra61938 жыл бұрын
The problem is that counter spell counters.... everything. A well built blue deck can have at least a fighting chance against any deck without blue hate... unless your counter spells don't fire off early so well. Ah, now blue has a defined weakness: Early board presence. In order to fight off the early game, you hold on to some alternative counter spells, as well as some defensive or conditionally strong 1 and 2 drops. Blue has a defined weakness to fast decks, just like red has trouble getting past midrange. Green hates blue. Turn three is when the cool shit happens, but everything gets countered. Rather than a 2 mana auto counter, a plethora of CONDITIONAL counter spells at least makes it so you have to think about what KINDS of cards you are countering, or what mana curve you are countering against instead of just : Good, I put in counterspell. That handles 99% of cards in magic that could be dropped turn 2.
@χαριελ8 жыл бұрын
Is it really that hard to cast two one drops? Not really. Mono blue has literally nothing to make up for its loss. What can mono blue do to compete with any playable mono deck outside of EDH or pauper? Pretty much nothing, and even if it could make the right adjustments it would probably just get wrecked by the next color. Mono blue doesn't even have much of a chance in a more lenient low drop format like tiny leaders.
@nelsonchandra61938 жыл бұрын
Isn't that what vapor snag Delver of secrets and fog bank are for? You could even play Nivmagus Elemental and have the strongest creature on the board turn 2 at instant speed at the end of the declare blockers step.
@χαριελ8 жыл бұрын
+Nelson Chandra spending mana and spells to pump a creature is not that great for mono blue, but delver can win games. Nivmagus Elemental is technically red and delver tends to run red except for in pauper. None of those cards keep you from falling behind playable mono decks.
@nelsonchandra61938 жыл бұрын
Is the fact that a card COULD be cast with another mana color against the rules of the deck being mono color? Is there mono a format with such restrictions? The power of nivmagus is not that it WILL be pumped, but that it COULD be pumped. If a problem could be solved with either a bounce or a power spike, why not the spike? The counters are permanent until removed. Nivmagus does not DEMAND its use, but rather offers it. Having just one on the board gives a flexibility to approach your problems the traditional blue way or to muscle through by throwing out a bounce spell and unexpectedly flashbacking your think twice.
@χαριελ8 жыл бұрын
+Nelson Chandra I just said it was red, and it is not a great idea to ditch a spell and tap to pump the elemental for mono blue, especially when you are getting the biggest creature on t2 like you said. Mono blue is not very competitive; this is the point I share with this video. I'm not sure you disagree; I think you are just arguing for the sake of arguing.

Delver Snapcaster Mage Flip-Jace Overall 3 viable creatures that I can think of (at the moment) for modern I disagree about 2 mana counters though Negate - counters SOOO MUCH... it deals with everything other then creatures Although true that blue needs other colours to be viable. its because its a support colour - it helps, not wins by itself. 2 mana counter to counter everything - is too much. And by the way blue is my fav colour. But I don't want it to be overpowered because blue is already one of the strongest colours if not the strongest.

5:13 the logic is flowed by using the "making" in the concept of blue as counter spell the thing that is the avatar of not letting creation happen :D Aside this as a fellow star trek fan I completely support the creation of a film for fans :D

Best part of these videos is realizing he (the actor/father) has no clue what he is talking about but still sounds so damn convincing! I love it. It doesn't hurt that the argument being made is not unreasonable, though in fairness there are some counterpoints to be made to parts of it.

Dear Professor, Greetings, I am a big fan I love all of your videos and reviews. Your voice is very soothing and I love listening to you. So on this topic when is the next podcast I have just started listening and I have noticed a large gap and no episode three. Will there be more or is this a cancelled project? Thank you for your time and peace

Having a card that is good against every deck is a strong card. Half of the difficulty of magic is playing the right cards, the other half is drawing the right cards. These are the faces of the coin we call variance. If you don't have to consider these when constructing a deck all the difficulty would be gone. All the sharks would play the one colour which fixes both problems. R&D are trying to fix a genetic fault in magic, the colour we call blue.

It's interesting because having poor mono-blue support could also be considered a failure on a flavour level. Green splashes so well, and it kind of makes sense: life, big, prosperous, nature. Nature is in all environments. Well, for the most part. Blue should be a challenge to splash, considering one of its "traits" is narcissism, and supremacy. Mono-blue, in my opinion, should be supported as a recognizable archetype in all formats and most sets both because of flavour reasons AND to make the game more versatile and fun.

I like Chasm Skulker. It only costs 3 mana and lets you put a +1/+1 counter every time you draw a card.

I agree with this. modern's true control color is black because it gets a lot of support blue was given support for a while but when something does what it is supposed to we can't keep it in modern or legacy... Commander is the only format where blue isn't cut in half by them but by your wallet force of will, commands and the pact are the only cards that I can't afford for my blue deck so they do need to support blue by giving us something just not cancel okay anything that one mana less with an upside like buy back or delve... I don't know but now I want a colorless delve counter....... The control player inside me wants it bad

I have been playing my mono-blue mill deck for the past 2 years now and watching blue be one of the most feared by most (even though I lose with it most of the time). It's a great deck but it's not fast enough and people are afraid of it so much so not many people play against it. I also play izzet and rely heavily on blue so anything that give me big shenanigans aren't from these past couple years of sets. I would like to play more blue but they keep it so pushed down farther than others I just can't find anything really good for it.

If black and white can have a lightning bolt, why am I stuck using Pongify in my blue commander decks? Why can't we have a blue bolt? something like. Unprecedented Waves (U) Instant (uncommon) "Place target creature on the bottom of its owner's library, and if its CMC was 3 or greater, that card's owner gets a 1/1 blue elemental. Threshold: If you have 5 or more instants and or sorceries in your graveyard, create a 1/1 blue elemental"

Hmmm, with Coreset M19 and Dominaria their seems to be a mono blue deck more than possible. Playable blue creature in there: Tempest Djinn.

Blue was always a cool color in my oppinion. It really is sad, that there are not many strong mono-blue decks (devotion and merfolk are all that I can think off). It has become a mere support-color, that does not function well alone.

Blue has been overpowered for 20 years, it doesn't need any more support.

The Yoshi PvP you can play whatever as long as you have the mana, you just have to watch the timing of the spells. Only instants can be played with another spell on the stack (before it resolves, the spell is put on the stack).

The old man should get a raise on his payroll (LOL). I think blue may not be getting as much love as it once did to compensate years and years of getting way too much love (3 out of the 9 cards from the "power 9" are blue), but it still got Delver of Secrets not too long ago, and when theros came out there was a very strong mono blue aggro deck. So, even though R&D refuses to release a functional reprint of Counterspell, I think blue is getting roughly as much love as the other colors. Maybe you professor, as a blue mage at heart feels blue should get much more love than it is getting, and I totally understand that as a green mage at heart, I feel green isn't getting as much love as it deserves. =)

I quit playing when they stopped reprinting counterspell. I dominated for months at LGS with my Rising Waters/Rhytic Study/20+ counterspell deck. That was back when we used to call it type two. Archivist, Patron Wizard, Temporal Adept... We used o call Counterspell "sweet daddy". I just can't believe they banned a cooking card that was such a staple. Blue is slow and weak in the early game, it NEEDS Counterspell.

I love blue, but it is very hard to play nowadays. I have a Kickass mono blue mill commander deck that has Teferi, Temperal Archmage as my general. and uses Sphinx's Tutelage and Teferi's Puzzle Box. A lot of my buddies get mad cause I win most the time. but I always explain to them this; majority of my creature spells are 6 mana plus that gives you all the time in the world to take me down to almost a quarter of my life points or less. problem is they play too conservatively because they are worried I'm going to counter their creatures or send them back their hands and make them put those back into their library with Puzzle box. lol I love my Teferi Puzzle Mill.

Totally agree! They won't even let us have good cantrips! As a modern player I get Serum Visions and Slight of Hand as my best, Which seems fine until you play with Pre-ordain and Ponder, Brainstorm or even Impulse. We don't even really have anything playable for card advantage, 3 mana for two cards at sorcery speed? Hell no! Dig should have cost two blue to cast. that might have made it weak enough to stay in the format. I have to say I really don't like where modern is going at the moment. It used to be legacy (very) light, now it is more and more becoming uber standard which isn't looking like that much fun atm. All us Tempo players are now scratching our heads at how to kill 5 toughness creatures (why isn't there anything playable in the format!!) without our Dismembers dying to Siege Rhino and pinging us for 4. In summary Bring back Preordain!!!

@Asmodeus5559 жыл бұрын
Peter Willems Yeah I'm not convinced that will be amazing. it looks ok, its at instant speed, that is really nice but at two drop isn't so nice. I wish it was a one drop, even at sorcery speed. Will it see play over SoH or Visions, probably not but might see play in a few decks that can need to dig further, combos in with control packages and that sort of thing.

I love blue, I'm a manipulative little bastard. I built a monoblue mill deck. And having done so, I have to find myself nodding at much of this. It's doable. Playable... Well I don't have too many friends to play against and what few I do stay pretty busy. So unfortunately intensive playtesting hasn't been a viable thing. Course I tend to build decks that are more fun than tourny oriented anyway - not a whole lot of 4 of's. My MBM deck is mostly 1-of's and 2-of's. 2 Jace, Memory Adepts.2 Doorkeepers and a handful of walls (fog and frost mostly) to stop aggro decks and mill more cards. I do think however blue/black is a better mill build. I have one of those too.
