The worst part for me is that they've kept many of Ajani's original traits the same, but twisted to serve Phyrexia, because the Ajani we love is still there, and yet he is also gone, and that hurts so much more than killing him or turning him into an evil monster ever could.

I see Ajani got a new Phyrexian upgrade and insight on life, and not only that; Tamiyo is no longer the only Phyrexian planeswalker now either, because she now has her old friend back; win win! 😁

That's the only thing that bothers me. They made a big deal about Tamiyo being the first Phyrexian planeswalker, but with Ajani being revealed as a sleeper agent they've shown that Phyexia can BUILD planeswalkers. What's up with that?

@@BouncingTribbles , I don't quite get what you mean by build. I mean they certainly didn't build a Ajani from the ground up if that's what you getting at. Of course, if you know anything about the compleation process it's safe to say that the integrated phyrexian machine parts into him though, and it's probably safe to say that it was sophisticated enough at that point that it allowed them to have a Ajani maintain his normal demeanor in appearance up until it was time for him to finally make his move. As to how they managed to do it and blend his organic covering with a now mostly machine interior, well; we could probably just say that there was literally more than one way to skin a cat at that point.

@@BloodDracolich sorry, I said sleeper agent like it explained everything. Sleeper agents are built by phyrexia to infiltrate other planes. They are construct creatures that believe themselves to be real boys, only to wake up one day and be fully phyrexian. Ajani wasn't compleated by process, he just had to be activated

@@BouncingTribbles , correction; he's not a willing convert. Part of the Planeswalker compleation process includes some sort of conditioning or hypnosis that allows the Planeswalker to retain their identity and values but otherwise subverts it in service of and for Phyrexia.

What they did to Ajani...it is cruel...makes me sick. So hear me out... So, two months ago my mom was diagnosed with cancer. My mom has already been dealing with the chronic illness of rheumatoid arthritis and acute kidney failure. She already had her two hips replaced. Because of the constant pain her very concept of reality has been warped. My mom is not the same mom that I knew before. Phyrexian oil kind of functions like that. I kind of feel what they did to Ajani is like what my mom is going through and it hurts. He is not the same as what I remembered him by. I feel kind of pathetic caring so much for a fictional character like this. I am probably just shoving all of my anxiety onto a fictional character, and yeah big corp doing it for the $, but it makes me feel more deflated and hopeless for the situation vs hype to get the set. My comment will probably get lost in the void, but the feelings still remain. I guess I kind of need a jump-start to get me excited about playing mtg and the new sets. Maybe return to Lorwyn? Wait....*Ajani was one of first planeswalkers introduced in Lorwyn* ok now I am just gonna go ........ I want my old Ajani. #saveajani

We can do nothing for them now, not Tamayo, not ajani, and not your mother, nothing that is except remember the people they once were and trying to live up to the examples they set for us beforehand. Heroes only die when people stop remembering them after all, and dominaria as well as earth have long memories.

Man, if Ajani had done, like, anything relevant in the past decade or so, this probably would've hit really hard. But the fact that Wizards have continuously sidelined and ignored him for years before bringing him back for the sole purpose of killing him off for shock value makes this hit with all the impact of a single wet noodle. Oh no, this useless background character who never does anything is evil now, this completely changes...nothing.

@Shawn Berg I mean, am I wrong? Has Ajani done anything important in the fourteen odd years since his first, last, and only major role back in Alara? Anything that wasn't immediately swept under the rug? Despite being the modern character with the single most experience directly confronting Nicol Bolas, and Bolas being a major part of his backstory, he contributes absolutely nothing to Bolas's defeat. He joins the main hero team, then they can't even wait for a single set before throwing him to the sidelines again, not even to be mentioned again until the very end of the arc - where he does nothing but fill in the background numbers. He does big work on Theros, spreading propaganda against the gods to weaken them by shaking people's faith. When we return to Theros, not only is he again not even given so much as a brief mention, but his efforts are completely forgotten about - to the extent that they have Elspeth start doing literally the exact same thing that he was doing, except she gets all the glory for it. He also would've been a perfect fit for Strixhaven. His power suite is all about bringing out the best in others - perfect for a school setting. The story calls for someone to teach the young protagonists how to stand against the tyrannical villain - he literally has the title "Mentor of Heroes". They even have a slot for a white planeswalker. So the obvious answer is... to give the mentor role to that amoral necromancer that we're all supposed to pretend is redeemed now. And that white planeswalker slot to a monored planeswalker. I really wish I could feel differently about this. I wish I could be invested enough to actually feel devastated about this. Ajani has such potential as a character - a cool design, a unique power suite, a backstory both sympathetic and badass, an incredibly likeable personality, all reasons he initially became my favourite planeswalker. But potential can only take you so far if you don't actually put it to use, and unfortunately, it's real hard for me to care about the "tragic downfall" of a character whose biggest contribution is being a face for Maro to point at whenever anyone asks about nonhuman planeswalkers.

Last thing I remember Ajani doing was pissing people off by "grinning a leonine grin", so I have to agree. Ajani is a cool character, but this twist could have been done in a lot of better ways.
