When the Apocalypse set was released I was in 5th grade (10 yrs old). I grew up kinda poor because my mom was a single working mother, but she managed to get me and my friends 2 booster boxes to open for my birthday party. Its still one of my fondest memories because I used the set of Desolation Angels I got to make a pretty bad Angel tribal deck that I loved. It was my first actual thematic deck that wasn't just a pile of cards from someone's closet. I think this is one of the reasons I love your thematic deck videos so much. Thanks again LVD you bring a lot of joy to us all.

Angels is such a nice tribal. I, myself, play Angels with a Historic (legendaries and sagas mostly) subtheme. You can go really slow with Birth and ECD, and the deck can afford to include a few wipes and the Karn-Wish-Package. It does very well against a wide variety of decks, grinding out even control decks with a very solid footing against aggro, but I can see that Containment Priest and Lifegain might be a good meta consideration right now.

This is such a cool deck! Angel theme aside; Containment Priest and Linvala put in work in the current metagame. This is a powerful and efficient anti-meta deck and that's so rare to see with the diverse metas in MTG.

Yep, that's why I think cast triggers are a little more balanced than ETB triggers (although I think ETB is more fun to play around with). You still get value from a cast trigger (like ulamog) even if they use a counterspell on it, so you're guaranteed something if it never enters the battlefield.

I've been playing angels a lot in the last months, and I found 1 or 2 divine visitations in the deck to be an insane amount of fun. With priest it basically replaces every dead angel with at least 1 other angel. With several priests it spirals out of control even more. It's incredibly fun to play with, and provides boardwipe immunity =)

I've been interested in Angels for awhile (actually, it seems like 90% of my decks are tribes...), but this video is what got me to finally lay down some Wildcards and give it a spin. Wow, is it fun! It feels a lot more interesting than just standard monowhite lifegain, and the various key parts are so versatile and useful in a wide number of scenarios (just a few minutes ago Linvala completely shut down a Zirda deck). Haven't gotten someone to whiff a Muxus or Transmogrify with the Priest just yet, but I'm looking forward to it! Thanks as always for your insightful and entertaining videos. :)

I've been trying to brew an Angel deck in modern ever since Res Angel got released (obviously not competitive in that format). That's almost the exact same list I've been trying out in Arena after getting Scroll in Jumpstart. When Amonkhet releases we also get Glory-Bound Initiate at the 2 slot. Another thing that is missing is the angel land, but I guess Radiant Fountain is similar.

I've been running this deck almost exactly except I run Dawn of Hope, Birth of Meletis and Banishing Light. Will try to swap in the scroll and the priest but either way this deck is really powerful when you get your key pieces in early.

Same here! I usually don't like pouring wildcards into one deck because as soon as I do there's something else that's shiny and catches my eye. I usually try to spend my wildcards on cards that I know will work in X amount of decks that I like to use.

I play Angel tribal in modern. Sereph sanctuary is very underrated. Resplendent Angel with bishop makes a turn 3 gain 10 life and make a Angel token.

I think you're correct. Baneslayer, Resplendent and Lyra have some synergy. But at that point, the game's probably over anyway. I think divine visitation would be nice with the bishop. Good thing angels are powerhouses on their own.

@@dougcarey2233 i guess divine visitation is more likely to be a disaster draw than to close games you would lose. The setup is pretty heavy for it to be a big factor, 5 mana for something close to a 4/4 indestructible (sometimes a few 4/4 indestructible, i'll admit), the whole thing being conditional to a bishop surviving and something dying soon, imean yeah its an engine but its a bit slow for historic

IMO it's too expensive for a card that will screw you if you draw it in the early game and it doesn't really do much to an established board in the late game. DV belongs in jank decks.

I have found the checklands work well for splashes. I have learned the hard way they can really backfire for three color decks though.

i was considering the same. but since it's double green, you'd basically have to run at least 4 shock lands and 4 check lands. so it's basically going to cost you 2 life in many games, and sometimes give you a mana sink. it's kind of a question of which you feel is more likely to be relevant.... and probably the 2 life of shocking in will cause more problems than it's worth. check lands also might mean you need to run less castles too, which is another potential cost. and even with 8 dual lands, it won't be reliable... but it's absolutely not worth including tapped lands.

How about a Sephara instead of Baneslayer? As a curvetoper it is just 2 mana more, it is an angel and in many late games you will have 4 flyers to pay the alternate cast cost and it gives indestructible to the angels... and combined with Shalai.....

Heliod is better in decks that gain life in small increments, with more cards like Leonin Vanguard and Linden. It will still be decent here, but not at its best.

Feather and Fight As One/Sheltering Light/Adamant Will hold up very well to sweepers. Black has gotten a few good sweepers in Extinction Event and Languish that are tough to deal with, but overall they're not usually a problem for me.

From gatherer: Linvala’s last ability affects only creatures on the battlefield. Activated abilities that work in other zones (such as bloodrush or unearth) can still be activated. Triggered abilities (starting with “when,” “whenever,” or “at”) are unaffected. So the answer is - no, Gempalm Incinerator is cycled from the hand, and therefore it's ability is not prevented from using.

Is there a story behind why most of Magic’s Angel creatures are female? I only see around 2 male angels and around 6 zombie/otherworldly angels.

In 2014 MaRo said it was intentional that angels were female and demons were male. Justification was not given as to why. It has since changed as there are a few male angels, but I'd be curious as to his reasoning back then.

They did say it was intentional but not the reasons why. I would guess personally it is a archetype thing. Focusing on one trait or another gives that tribe a easy to use brand that can be sold to people as a distinct identity.

There is historic event and traditional historic event. May need to click on the play button and see if it pops up. If not you need to click the slider where it talks about Arena Modes. (I think that is what the slider is called.)

Queue up in play mode, it says it's invalid but you can pick the historic deck anyway and it will put you with other historic decks on casual play.

honestly containment priest is ONLY good against reanimator decks, goblin decks run shock and lightning bolt and will just kill it, but reanimator decks get completely shut out by it. though not scarab god or GPG

Mostly easy matchups. Against UW Control or Bant Control with Wrath of Gods and Shatters, there is nearly no chance of winning, because of nearly no extra draw. Vs Life it is nearly impossible with your build to stop the Pridemates or vs Sultai . In general Angels have big problems vs control decks. Its strength comes from aggro-matchups, because its midrange.
