You ever wish they would just make alchemy-legal versions of historic and all on Arena, so you never had to tolerate the same kind of person spamming Heist and all those utterly broken alchemy cards in Historic, because it makes the game trivial for them? Because after losing 35 Historic games in a row to people spamming Alchemy cards...they need to address that crap.

I don't think the reason why we view arena differently is just the rewards. Personally, I think it is because we don't view the enemy as players due to there being no social systems. There is no chat at all during matches, even one with filters. We can't rematch people, friend them, or easily communicate with them after the match. While it has improved some, the challenge system has always been buggy, especially on mobile. All the "gathering" aspect of MTG is non-existent. At the bare minimum, there should be custom player lobby's and a lobby list. That way we can play with randoms with the Intent of making friends.

I play EDH with a real cool group of cats, else I wouldn't care about the game at all. I used to not like proxies back when a mana crypt book promo was $100, pretty much top of the format ramp circa 2010-2012. I sold out, haven't spent money on cards in years except to proxy anything over a $1, and a pre re here and there. Everything else I have has literally been given to me by friends that have extra. The cards only have value if you are using them for fun. Even then, the price now is insane.

When Wizards didn't think about designing cards for EDH. The same is true for Legacy and Extended, etc. Between focusing on Standard as the main competitive format they care about and reeling in the powercreep is the direction wizards needs to move in.

Arena is balls anyway. People playing to grind or playing for battle pass rewards instead of for fun warps the gameplay. People concede or rope way more often, it’s generally much more toxic than paper. Never mind the hand smoothing, arena only cards, arena only errata, and other issues that more directly affect how the games play.

yeah...I used to rope when people play the a$$hole decks like ugin/all removal control, etc...also arena is just broken because it tries to rig you into 50% winrate yet allows degenerate 2-3 win decks to dominate if you stay away from the 'big' chase cards they label as op...its just better to uninstall....you will be a happier person.

That's not entirely the issue, the issue is Arena offers ZERO socializing and gives daily quest which you only complete for winning (usually) so the entire game quickly devolved into a min max situation where people only play to win. MTG is a highly social game but Arena is intentionally designed in a way to eliminate that in order to translate frustration into purchases. It's not a coincidence they have no chat function or social hub area, that shit existed in a starcraft in the 90s. The whole system is designed from the ground up with help of psychologists and gambling experts as to how to maximize profits.

In person can be fun. But, honest to god Duress needs to be banned. It’s better than Thoughtseize, and I am so fed up with running into slime on Arena playing mono-black discard roughly 1 in 4 games. It’s a viable strategy. It’s also cheap as heck and says a ton about the person doing it-none of which is good.

@@theperfectbeing I believe it. What also drives you absolutely nuts is a mill deck. You run a mill deck and suddenly 8/10 of your opponents are running towers. They can say whatever they want--their matchmaking algorithm looks at your deck and finds a foil so you lose more than you win, barring extreme luck. I tried a mono-green survivor deck recently, and it went 1/12 or 1/13 before I deleted it because it felt like every single person I played was running mono-black or black/[other color...but barely] with so much removal it didn't matter if my survivors survived...they still all vanished the second a Cut Down, Shoot the Sheriff, or Go for the Throat materialized out of the ether to wreck my day.

Yeah but the thing about that is you don't know if the deck even has a proper wincon. Playing against that in ranked and I've seen a number of times where the turn cycle bottoms out because their win con was buried and I win off incremental chip damage.

They saw the play rates dropping on arena in real time. That hurts their stock reports and daily revenue even. Nadu was making them money until banned, so incentivized NOT to band. The arena leylines have already been crafted AKA wild cards taken out of the economy, so win for WOTC.

Hey, I commented on the Non Disparaging Agreement thing on the previous video. I am Not a Lawyer, this is Not Legal Advice, its just a fact of US Law on the books that anyone can look up in a Law Library. But my brother works for a local lawfirm and I just talked them all again about this situation last night. They assured me that this Agreement is Not Legally Binding. There is No Judge on the Face of the Earth that would uphold this Agreement in Court as long as the person whom signed it Counter Sue's, sighting Duress. Now they do have to prove it was signed under Duress, but once they do, the Judge will either rule in their favor or throw the case out completely. That's what I was just told by my Brother and his Boss in the last 24 hours. Those Contracts are not worth the paper they are written on and if Wotc tries to sue anyone over them, the Judge will pretty much laugh in their faces, if it even makes it that far. This Pannel has Nothing to worry about, essentially. It's just an Intimidation Tool Corporations use to scare uneducated people with. Infact, if the Pannel Member is a Legal US Citizen, this Agreement is a violation of these people's US Constitutional Rights to free speech and can Sue Wotc in Federal Court for Violation of their 1st Amendment Rights, if they choose to.

As I understand it, as having been told by members of the lawfirm my brother works for, Non Disclosure Agreements also do Not hold up in court, but again this is if the signer counter Sue's sighting Duress, and I stress that from what I understand, they do have to be able to prove that they were forced to sign under Duress. Those are the key elements there. What constitutes Duress is threatening language, intimidation, etc.. which a Non Disclosure or Non Disparaging Agreements are themselves instruments of intimidation. Therefore, as it was explained to me, unless the Entity that issued the Agreement just happens to have a Judge in their back pocket, these will almost never hold up in court. I don't know if a Non Disclosure Agreement infringes upon any Civil Liberies under the Constitution, but I can bring it up the next time I consult my Brother and his Boss. My brother is working as a Legal Aid while he is studying to pass the Bar Exam himself to become a lawyer. So I don't think he'll mind looking it up for me. AGAIN, this is just my own personal understanding of what I was told.

Im not a Lawyer myself, but basically Non Disclosure and Non Disparaging Agreements are just a threat to tie you and your financial assets up in court fighting it for however long it takes for it to go before a judge. Corporations and their lawyers can drag that sort of thing out for months or even years, and they are banking on their employees not fighting back and just bending over and taking it. It's basically just elaborate bluff. You see a Legally Binding Contract depends upon both parties entering into said contract with Willful Consent of their Own Free Will. If one party or the other can prove Duress, then the Contract is Null and Void. Which, is how it was explained to me. It's basically their word against yours and that doesn't usually fly in a civil court. Like I previously stated, the Judge will either throw it out as being frivolous or they will rule in favor of the Party whom was unfairly pressured into signing against their Own Free Will. These are the points that an Actual Lawyer will have to argue on the victims behalf and again, Corporations bank on their employees either not being able to afford adequate legal representation or not being educated enough to adequately represent themselves by filing the appropriate motions and legal paperwork which all cost loads of money, time, and mental stress.

@11:56 I have heard from multiple lead set designers; Standard sets are designed on their own island if you will. This mentality has pros and cons. One this creates themes for a given set and thus two adjoining sets will not feel alike (both for Limited and Standard play). Are there 0% checks made for cross Standard cards (/ across a given year’s Standard’s health?)? I dont think its 0% but its not much. So we do see cards can get ‘out of hand’ - which is probably in part cause of this desire to design for vibes and less about how healthy Standard feels as a whole. (I don think this absolves them from ruining a format. I just don’t play Standard, in part cause how slow WotC has been to react to problems)

Another issue on arena I’ve noticed is I only ever draw one land color for my opening hand. I play Kastral, blue/white, and I will only ever draw all white or all blue and then I have to pray I top deck the opposite color

I got my matches done, quit, restarted cuz I forgot to check the daily deals on the store, and saw the ban announcement in the client. And I don't have a single one. Not going to affect me since I don't play Standard (and I always auto-concede to it in Historic), but I'm still glad it's gone on principle.

I wish the tier system was based on set legality. Brawl was standard, Make a name for Pioneer and Modern legalities. It kinda solves the normal issues we all complain about. I tried creating a 60 card pioneer commander format and allowed Planes walkers as commanders. It was a lot of fun, not as slow as you might think and left so much room to just build fresh ideas and combos.

They banned the card today. It is for sure today. It was a late update because of the banning and problems with the Midweek Magic not giving out prizes during test runs. It happened around 3:30-4pm PT. Normally it would have been much earlier.

My problem with the current state of Magic design is that it feels like almost everything needs to do something cool. Cards do too much, which inherently hurts standard and Commander. When too many cards do too much, you create accidental game-warping synergies. That’s why vanilla and nearly vanilla (one, sometimes two of flying, first strike, double strike, lifelink, vigilance, deathtouch, sometimes trample) are important for the health of the game as a whole. It would take years of WotC scaling back the design to help fix standard, and Commander+Modern can’t be fixed because the damage is already done.

Leyline is combo card not an aggro card. It just so happens that the combo pieces work really well in aggro shell but make no mistake it's a combo enabling machine not a really an aggro one. Turn 2 kills probably shouldn't be a thing in standard regardless of how they happen but that's more of seperate thing on just how agregious of a problem this particular combo is.

The inconsistency added to Mono Red's strategy with Leyline of Resonance definitely made it unpredictable if they could win or not. I've seen a large amount of Mono Red decks gas out after losing one or two creatures due to extra mulligans to find Leyline or drawing Leyline after the opening hand glutting up their hand. It would always be funny if they couldn't win by turn 2 and got trapped. That said... It wasn't fun either way. Winning because they don't pop off is as boring as losing because they did. It's the inconsistent and game warping nature of the card that I hated.

Hey, I'm often with you and your Kritik. That they take their time with commander and think about this a little longer with more people is a good thing though in my opinion. Commander is good as it is and rule zero works... mostly fine. Let them think about how to make it better step by step

I play mono black with 14 spot removal in arena, I'm not really afraid of mono red. Even if they lower my life when they have 0 creature and sheoldred or Archfiend of the Dross are on the table they scoop. I build my decks in the optic of all the players play fast deck, no room for fun but only trying to win

i hope sometime people yell at WotC to stop with this weird "bracket system" and make use of the system they already have. Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Mythic. You wanna play with Mythic cards? go competitive. Wanna play casual? nothing higher than uncommon. Wanna do "power level 7?" No mythics.

So, it occurred to me when a friend told me how he liquidated his Gaia's Cradle, in a world where Dockside caught the ban hammer, why is it still commander legal? Serra Sanctum too, it seems like they get snapped in half WAY easier than a 2 drop goblin, since it cares about your board instead of your opponents...

I would be surprised for cradle to catch a ban. Cradle is very niche by comparison to Dockside. Additionally, Cradle cares only about the stuff on one player's board, the one who played the Cradle, making it more narrow in use and easier to deal with. Dockside, on the other hand, punishes the entire table for daring to play artifacts in Commander, which basically means it punishes people for just playing the game normally. It's way easier to get huge snowballing value out of Dockside in every deck that can run it than it is to get that same level of value out of Cradle.

I feel so disconnected from what is happening in magic right now. My local game store has so many cool promotional events on top of the fact that commander night is so casual and its been nothing but fun. The draft nights are competitive but no one is toxic. But i keep seeing these decisions and news about stuff thats happening within magic and it just doesn't add up. I feel sorry for people who have to deal with whatever BS there seems to be going on elsewhere.

You can just ignore our Commander Rules, but we also created a group of 17 people to make decisions about Commander. Why bother with the Commander group at all? Commander is a casual format, why do they need any of this in the first place?

@13:20, I see there is Magic, the social game that involves humans and we just happen to play with cards. Then there is MTGA which feels like you are playing a bot and can be Very soul sucking. MTGA is NOT Magic. There is no Gathering to MT(g)A. (I dont see emoting as a proper stand in to sharing emotions and having a bloody conversation whilst playing). Imagine if you played Magic (paper) and were given 2.5usd for your first win, 1usd for each following win. And boosters only costed 1usd per booster. I would still choose to play Magic over MTGA, cause Magic is social.

Always said that Wizards shouldn't of ever even got involved with Commander. Should of just stayed a player based format. Now that Wizards somehow has taken control of it, I'm almost scared what they are going to do to it now. And that whole contract thing is just ridiculous, basically censoring anything negative by those foolish enough to sign the dotted line and basically get nothing in return except maybe some early spoilers. No real power to help guide the format at all. Seriously wondering what group of monkeys is running WotC now a day. Must of got them from the same supplier as Konami US...

it's not that Arena has a rewards system, but that it has a garbage one (intended to be so). It makes playing into a job or into a money sink, so then, yeah, you'll want to be efficient or get out (I've went through both situations already), or spend recklessly on the digital goods (surely enough people are doing this and the current economy is great for Wotc at the end of the day).
