I started playing Magic when Khans came out. I remember coming to your 2015 Toolkit video to see if I wanted to get it to start the game, and remember seeing people complain about getting a Maze pack when it rotates after it was released. When I got this kit I complained that Nyx was included because it rotates soon and it hit me, it's been a whole year playing Magic, lol And and it was an incredible time watching every one of your videos, professor! Thank you so much for all your work
@KuiperDesu9 жыл бұрын
One of the things that I think this video neglects to mention is that the large card pool of a toolkit makes it easy to build multiple decks from a single toolkit. Several years ago when I was getting back into Magic after a long hiatus, I bought a toolkit with a friend and we made a Red/Blue deck and a Green/Black deck to play against each other. Then after several games, we scrambled the cards and he made a Green/Red deck while I formed a Blue/White deck. There are lots of different permutations of decks you can try even with just a single card pool. If you're just looking for casual kitchen table play, you can get a lot more mileage out of a single toolkit than you would from buying preconstructed decks.

Based on this vid I bought the Origins toolkit as my first entry into paper Magic (have about 40ish hours on DotP 14). Pulled an Athreos God of Passage and a Goblin Piledriver out of the boosters, so I was stoked right from the start! I have a lot of videos to catch up on this channel, very informative and good atmosphere all around. Built my first deck (black/blue exploit) yesterday evening, can't wait to playtest it!

I actually picked up one of these earlier last week along with my binge buying of Magic cards. I wanted the extra land, as all the land I have is either in my Commander decks (that I don't remove cards from) or all my OLD lands from when I was growing up in the mid-late 90's, so I was def needing some new ones. The Card container while not high quality, is a wonderful temporary storage of all my cards until i can fully sleeve my cards and either deck deck boxes or binders for them (I only buy Dragonhide Legion binders, so not exactly a cheap buy). The icing on top (which is not indicative of the product's typical value) was getting 5 foils from each booster, the crowning jewel was a foil Dragonlord Dromoka. Which I find to be an awesome and beautiful card and interested to include her in a deck/build a deck around her. :p

Personally I love the toolkits more than any product for new and returning players. I get what the professor is saying about it, in that is wont stand up to any precon deck. but I remember when I was getting back in and I bought a deckbuilders toolkit. I got home around noon time. I was with my father buying groceries. I literally spent the rest of the day building decks from just that toolkit. there are enough cards to make 2 multicolored decks! some of the joy of playing magic is deckbuilding. just seeing what goes together. I was so excited after building the decks that I pitted them against each other, myself piloting both decks. This product reignited my spark if you will for playing this game and building decks too! with a respectable pool of cards of each color, and new and returning player can let his imagination fly! AND you get 4 packs and that gets you excited about beefing your decks!

I recently got some work friends into MtG and one of them went out and bought two M15 DBT, one Magic Origins DBT, a Commander deck, two Intro Packs, individual cards from a local shop and an assorted bundle of 100+ cards for .65$. He has constructed four different decks, and is always building more. I suggested he should put some of that money aside and buy individual cards in the future, as the three DBTs alone have given him over 800+ cards, in addition to everything else he's purchased since then. He was incredibly pleased when he pulled a Nissa from his Origins DBT, but otherwise has had to purchase specific cards from the local shop or online. I purchase all my cards individually, as I often build my decks beforehand and select the required cards, but that often costs between 150-300 dollars for a full 60 card deck. More so if I want even more expensive cards. A DBT gives you enough cards to start playing right away and keeps everything on a near even playing field. My Constructed decks usually wipe the floor of the decks amoung the group, even the second most experienced player who semi-buys individual cards can't usually hold a candle to my decks. In that respect I agree that DBTs are an amazing resource for their value and provide a level playing field. As a more experienced MtG player a DBT deck also forces me to play non-Constructed decks, relying on much more skill and intuition than the raw power of the cards themselves. It's good fun and fantastic training to sharpen your skills. I also agree that DBTs should all have boosts from the same set, especially with rotation going up. It's fine for casual play, but a hindrance for other formats.

That was an awesome box... You made your money back on just the origins pack... I have opened more than a box of packs and haven't pulled a walker yet... one of my local shops had a league for a while with packs from just after Khans dropped. I haven't heard anything else about anything like that lately because he couldn't keep up with demand for packs and packs for league also... I prefer playing in a draft over FNM because I can't drop the money on getting a deck together for standard and still keep up with the meta or changing standard sets... I've recently branched out into a modern deck that was considerably more expensive and I think I've come to like playing online but not on MTGO having to buy cards....

Ooh! *Raises hand* will you be talking about the "Wizard's Tower" Limited Format? take the contents of a fat-pack, smash them together, and play a five player free-for-all. the top five cards are revealed, and players can chose to take from that pool, or draw from the top and let fate decide. when the last of the five cards is taken, five more are revealed. it poses an interesting strategy where you sacrifice the top deck for a more selective choice.
@phantomspcmn9 жыл бұрын
It might make prerelease too expensive, but it would make it more flavorful to offer a deckbuilder's-toolkit-ish upgrade to your prerelease kit. You'd still get the same contents as normal, but what if you also got a small storage box like the toolkit, a pack of 40 sleeves unique to your choice, a cardboard deck box, etc. This way all you'd need to bring is a playmat to the tournament.
@SharpCookies9 жыл бұрын
As a casual player who has in the past bought a toolkit, I think for new/casual players it's worth it. When I first bought a toolkit I was SO excited to go through my packs and all of the cards inside of the kit. Being new I didn't know many of the cards so I felt it was expanding my knowledge of the cards in the more recent sets and it was just FUN. I did use a couple of the cards, along with cards I got through buying intro decks and individual packs and such, to build decks (bad ones, but decks nonetheless). When you're new/casual, the thrill of getting more cards, even if it isn't technically the most financially sound decision, is worth it. That sort of excitement kept me playing Magic and kept my interest to learn more about it.
@SharpCookies9 жыл бұрын
Of course, I was also practicing learning how to play by borrowing my friends decks and playing with intro decks/making my own bad kitchen table magic decks. So I don't know if the toolkit is the best way to help new/casual players learn how to play, but still

I know I wont be competitive for a while against my friends who have tweaked their decks for potentially years, but really buying singles, net decking, or getting a competitive premade deck I can't mess with just isn't fun to me. I'm thinking to get back into the game I want to get one of these and maybe a fat pack. I'd rather bust open some boosters, get a few ideas then maybe purchase some singles to round out what I can make at random. I'm also going to encourage them to buy a deck builder's kit and do some friendly wagers of our own. That seems like a great idea to level their card advantage.

You don't have a khans, you have a dragons, and when i opened 2 magic 2015 back in september of last year one has one from each of theros block, and the other had 2 from theros block and one dragon's maze, which was of course at that point a total wash. And from what i've learned there are in 2015 eleven sets of 10 cards (one for each of the color combinations plus mono black devotion for gray merchant) and you get like 4 or 5 of these 11 sets. Plus you get a basic package of the five colors to start with so every kit will contain a certain set and they mostly appear to be similar to the sampler decks you can get. What I'm curious on is how Magic Origins differs from this, I imagine what they want their two colors to do are different, they've changed like black green wants to focus on elves now, and the other one used theros cards to support it, this one will use khans i hope, so if you see any theros cards in this box besides the one booster pack that is disappointing. I'd be disappointed overall. But we are getting rid of core sets, so I wonder how they will handle tool kits and starter samplers and such.

My LGS actually stopped selling these because of the issue with the packs. Kids were getting cards they couldn't use in standard. I think the toolkits would be much more useful if they came with 4 of each card. Keep the same casual mix of commons, uncommons, and bulk rares, but by increasing it from 1-2 to a 3-4 of each card you will get much more enjoyable and playable casual decks.

I'm a new-comer to MTG, so I'm sorry if this feels misplaced or something but I need to ask you something: How can you deal with frustration in this game? See, my brother (who also only recently started) and I are dueling each other frequently. Both of us play with slightly modified clash packs (he plays with the armed and dangerous, I play with power and profit). Since both of us use premade Decks with some changes, I figured our chances should be relatively even, but out of 10 games I lose 7. He mostly uses generic beat-down tactics, while i try to utilise some more creative mechanics but he simply out-paces my deck since he needs far less mana to throw some good creatures on the field. When I try to make my deck better, i just realise that he owns way better low-mana creatures than I do and my current card-pool is very limited, so i can't even beat him at his own game. It is incredibly frustrating, especially because my brother is a terrible winner. How can I even out the odds a bit?

Professor, as a returning player, should I wait for Zendikar to come back and attend the pre-release or start already?

Just for fun i bought a m14 deckbuilder and it had an m13 booster in it... after that i realized why i never picked those up when i was more into standard...

there are also alot of young magic players in the community so i wish they made some thing for them as well like a casual or a new kid just starting or for them to have a choice

I have a radical proposal. Do a Toolkit with each premier set. Have the fixed cards be staples that would have normally appeared in a Core Set. Have the semi random pools be bi colored limited strategies. Top them off with four Play Boosters of the respective set.
