I like that I predicted the #1. I feel it someone should mention that you can turn a card with morph, etc. face up in response to a split second spell. It's a "special action" and not an activated ability. This was relevant when Time Spiral was current as Willbender was reprinted. It was common to see Sudden Death redirected in draft.

This is what I kept thinking during the video

There is one thing you can do against Split Second: Turn a face down creature face up!😉😉 Morph (and similar effects) do not use the stack and so, you can pay to turn a creature face up in response to a split Second spell. This can trigger abilities (in special with cards like "Stratus Dancer") or just help against the spell (maybe now the creature has protection or hexproof or have higher toughness or is not even a creature anymore 🤔)
@JindraAG17 күн бұрын
IIRC there even is a morph creature that counters a spell when turned face up, so they aren't completely immune to counter magic. Just need really specific edge cases.
@TheMagicRat93317 күн бұрын
You can take also take certain other special actions such as discarding Circling Vultures.
@mantissaPuc17 күн бұрын
@@TheMagicRat933 this is a trick one 🤔. Yes it is not an activated ability. But it says "any time you could cast an instant" and you cannot cast instants with a "split second" on the stack 🤔. Morph (and other similar effects) on the other hand says "any time you have priority"
@TheMagicRat93317 күн бұрын
@@mantissaPuc CR 116.2e clarifies Circling Vultures’ ability as “any time you have priority”. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that the “any time you could cast an instant” text printed on the card is just supposed to be a metonym for “any time you have priority”
@mantissaPuc17 күн бұрын
@@TheMagicRat933 You are right 👍 from the "Notes and Rules Information for Circling Vultures" on scryfall: "...Abeyance won’t prevent you from being able to discard it." And Abeyance says "Until end of turn, target player can’t cast instant or sorcery spell..." 😉

@rafaelsousa263317 күн бұрын
This is a mechanic that's pretty high on the storm scale and I never really understood why. Legends of Runeterra had burst and focus spells, which essentially play like split second and were an integral part of the game. You'd cast the spell and it would just happen, without passing priority or your opponent being able to interact. They were careful with it, though. Only spells like cantrips and combat tricks to buff your creatures could have burst. This made combat tricks very viable and important, unlike in magic where you're setting yourself for a 2 for 1. However, if a card could interact with your opponent's creatures, it very rarely could be burst speed. The only effect that comes to mind was giving -X/-0.
@poiri17 күн бұрын
I’d assume the main reason is complexity, since especially for newer players if they see something refer to “the stack” it’s not exactly self explanatory. Especially when a lot of new (or even new-ish) players don’t know how the stack functions to begin with.
@warpdrivefueledbyinsomnia816516 күн бұрын
@@poiri I can also seeing Split Second fading a little bit in the name of fun. Part of the draw of Magic as a game is the ability to instantly interact with an opponent's moves with either spells or abilities (not the only game that does this). This ability shuts that whole part of the game down. It's a great advanced mechanic, but I can see how there would be some dislike from the kitchen table crowd.
@finnpeterson433516 күн бұрын
I think it's cause magic's interaction is kind of based on the stack. It removes one of the most important aspects of the game for not a lot of benefit in my opinion. And in general, not being able to interact with something just kinda sucks and makes the game feel more like a lottery than normal.
@warpdrivefueledbyinsomnia816516 күн бұрын
@@finnpeterson4335 true, but sometimes complete shutdown interaction is necessary. For example, if your opponent combos into a large Walking Ballista, a Split Second card is basically the only way to interact with it if it actually hits the battlefield. I think this may just be a difference of playstyles on my part. In 60-card one-on-one games, I think Split Second is fine, especially in competitive environments. I'm also fine with Stone Raining someone out of playing a game of Magic at all. But, there are very few Split Second cards I'd use in commander. I guess it's really context dependent.
