Descent into Madness was niche, but IIRC, it did come in a block where Black had a sorcery to create 13 Zombie tokens, and an enchantment that created zombie tokens on each of your upkeeps equal to the number of Zombies you controlled. So you could use either of those to fuel Descent into Madness for a long time, resulting in your opponent losing their board and hand while you are losing mostly if not completely Zombie tokens. I always felt like Hellcarver Demon was really built for a deck loaded up on Sorceries and Instants, probably UBR-colored. But I can't imagine that working out well. It's like a twisted one-sided Warp World, but on the wrong side.

Descent into Madness's awfulness shows just how important the option to put the counter on Smokestack is. It's almost the exact same card, but must escalate each turn. But the ability to keep Smokestack going forever is what makes it so good, which Descent into Madness can't do nearly as easily.

I am surprised this doesn't include Lich's Mirror. It's practically useless on it's own and any combos you can come up with it are rather hard to pull or pointless. On the other hand Molten tail masticore is great. It can be used as an alternative win condition in decks that draw many cards, like owling or turbo fog, or those that benefit from discard such as madness. Functionally it transforms every card in your graveyard into a colorless flame javelin, add a couple of training grounds and you will be firing 20 damage per turn in most situations.

I found Erebos's Titan played pretty well in a deck that could keep the field fairly clear, and had ways to reanimate an opponent's creature. The fact that the card allows for both blanking of removal of 2 types (targeted destroy effects, which are reasonably common, and burn) if they have no board state is actually a substantial upside vs some decks. I found it's a decent option for Pox if you don't want to run Rotting Regisaur, or if you actually think the indestructibility is good enough to warrant inclusion (or that the recursion is worth it, which it really can be if you can keep the field clear, because it lacks trample). Not saying it's a top tier card, just that it's better than it looks.

I think it would see sideboard use at 2 or even 3. Consider how many mill decks are in format right now. A lot of times Rogues for example beats other aggro decks by mill pressure. So a lot of white aggro decks would like to have a couple of copies for game two, because it totally tranform the game if you could push it through the counters. In fact, it would be so meta that rogues would have to slow play to avoid it. I'm you are playing rogue and turn six or seven, white plays a card that puts the 30+ cards you've mill back in their library, and gains 60 life. Suddenly all your race conditions are heavily against you, your spell effects are turned off because they no longer have 8 in the graveyard, and you know that you are facing the same reset in your future.

'Descent into Madness' is a jankier, worse Smokestack, but Smokestack is so good that the bad version is still playable. Had one in a Hapatra EDH deck, it always became a 'must destroy' for my enemies as I could just exile tokens or even cards that I'd draw sacking tokens to Skullclamp. And "Hellcarver Demon" has a janky but fun combo that PleasantKenobi played in legacy, where you reanimate it and hit with it in a deck full of extra attack cards, effectively winning on a turn 2. If it's playable-ish in such a high power format, it's hardly deserving of being in a 'worst mythic ever' list, but that's my opinion.

Erebos’s Titan was actually pretty cool at the time because Languish was printed in the same set. So unless you were up against Tasigur/Siege Rhino/Silumgar, you could get the Titan’s indestructible ability active really easily

I once paired up Descent into Madness with Krenko Mob Boss, and some proliferate to speed it up in a Grixis EDH deck and it worked quite nicely

Hellcarver was amazing in the original Zendikar set. It combo'd extremely well with Warp World and with heavy mana ramp, when it was still in Standard. x4 Hellcarver x4 Warp World x4 Bogardan Hellkite x2 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn Won a couple local tournaments with the deck.

I dont think Descent into Madness is that bad. It's basically just a worse Smokestack ... but any deck that really wants Smokestack should probably be running Descent as well.

First mythic I ever pulled was Ulvenwald Hydra. Playing for 4 years at the time I was psyched. Still one of my favorite green cards

Wold of devils breach i uave to say would be badass in Madness as Conspiracy Theorist is a heavily played card in that deck format and it is both less powerful and exiles the card which limits the situations for its use as the card may be gone for good.
@DAsrada3 жыл бұрын
Transcendant Master shows up in 39 Atraxa Decks, where you don't really need to put that much mana into it. You just Proliferate its counters. It does a fine enough job as far as I've seen being a Planeswalker guard dog.

Descent into Madness is more or less a 'fixed' Smokestack, and works with similar strategies. (pump out a lot of tokens to exile, watch the opponent's board vanish.) It's Johnny-tastic, to be sure, but *worst* is stretching it, IMO.

I play the Dragonlord in my Ur-Dragon deck. He's a nice lightning rod creature since either the opponents answer it, wasting resources, and allow an opening for my scarier monsters, or let it get pumped while preparing. Mana is never an issue in that deck, and I often have so much floating around by turn 5 that getting it to be scary is quite easy.
@dylanfarley81362 жыл бұрын
I have it in my Gruul dragon deck. Honestly I think it's nice flavor to have that in there, but gameplay wise most decks with green shouldn't have any issue throwing an extra mana or two at it a turn. Like you said, it either gets removed or pretty quickly starts dishing out some damage along with whatever else you've played.

I tried really hard to make Descent into Madness work in Standard. It didn't really, but it was still pretty fun and I think it's a super flavorful card.

I built a deck around using hellcarver demon back when it was in standard. I had two hellcarver demons and four clone shells and a couple summoning traps. The whole point was to get Emrakul out for free! When it worked, it worked!

I really like the idea of Erebos´s Titan in Marchesa Steal EDH decks. I can trigger it with her by flinging an enemies creature and getting it back with Marchesa.
@The5lacker3 жыл бұрын
Something to note about Erebos's Titan, it's when a card LEAVES, including "being exiled from the graveyard." So you do have SOME control over his recursion. Still bad though.
@demonreaperkit84433 жыл бұрын
Lol I have archangels light in one of my decks and I just use it to make sure I don’t deck out. I don’t have a mana problem for casting it cause I also have green in my deck. I think it’s okay for late game affects or if you’re going up against a mill deck. You have 99 cards in your library if 50 of those get reshuffled into your library that’s100 life gain and depending on what cards you have on board may even win you the game.

Archangel's Light is the entire reason I have a collection of what I call "trap cards". Cards that you remember thinking must be awesome when you were a noob, only to realize years later what hot garbage they are. SHOUT OUT TO SMOLDERING EFREET!!

How much life per card would Archangel's Light have to gain to be broken at it's current mana cost? I think at 5 life per it could be pretty oppressive.

Was it ever revealed the card they originally were going to print instead of Archangel's Light? Or did they just never print it at all? Or maybe it was printed in a more recent set and we're just not aware of it because they didn't say anything?

As soon as i saw Rowdy crew in a booster i opened, my first reaction was that it was not a good mythic. I have a binder with mostly mythics and rares and i dont want it near that. Hahaha
@awoo3002 жыл бұрын
Despite being the top 10 worst mythics, I'll be more than happy to Pack 1 Pick 1 at least the top 6-10 cards on this list. It just goes to show that Mythics are still inherently much more powerful.
@delathenleso57933 жыл бұрын
lmao Kargan Dragonlord is a fantastic levelup card. Yes, it's all Red to level it up, but what makes it good is that it's a mana sink. You get it down early, and pump it up over the next 3-4 turns with the mana you held up for kill spells that ended up not being used. Now. Is it good in a vacuum? No. Is it even particularly good in general? Not especially. But it's flavorful and useful, which puts it ahead of 50% of Mythic cards and shouldn't earn it a spot on this list.

So here's some edh deck styles where those cards are okay: 10 : for any deck trying to get infinite mana it's another staff of domination 9 : wrath tribal ? giant tribal ? okay I'm stumped with this one 8 : well you said it cleric tribal, also it's a great "leftover" mana sink 7 : same as 8 just slightly worse, funny those 2 don't synergize with Zirda while lower rarities one does (Hedron field purist is a must in Zirda) 6 : Well there is 12 madness B/R cards with CMC 5+ so yep good with Falkenrath 5 : With the new pirates in CMRlegend it's hard to justify especially if you also play U, still it's okayish if topdecked in mono-R 4 : Tokens Decks love this Prosh, Thalisse etc... 3 : If you can set up the top of your deck with CMC 7+... DOOMSDAY (evil laugh), I mean the card Doomsday 2 : Ok that's pure unadulterated Jank of Olde, Dredge with Zirda companion ? Memelord ? 1 : Lathiel love this, also a "security" in self mill deck 0 : Also all those cards are CHEAP (づ◔ ͜ʖ◔)づ

Soul of Ravnica does have some reasonable utility in edh, as birthing pod decks can tutor it up after generating infinite mana with perigrine drake in order to win the game on the spot, though that is pretty fringe for a mythic.
