I feel you missed discussing why spirit link is useful - how while it can provide "lifelink" it also effectively prevents an opponents creature from dealing damage if enchanted to it.

This has been my favourite deck for a while, and it's kinda nice to see it in the spotlight !! it holds a place in my heart , and although the raise in awareness might hurt my ability to win with it , it's still nice to see it get attention

How did it do? The first deck I ever built myself (without looking at any guides or any decklists) was basically the deck in this video, but mono-green. Later, having lost that deck (and all my cards) to a real-life flood, I redesigned and rebuilt the deck, making it green/white, and it (by coincidence) turned out to be *very* similar to the deck in this video. Just curious how good my little homebrew deck would fare.

When I made my own version of this deck, I instead turned some playsets of enchantments into three of each, and added a playset of Helm of the Gods, essentially an ethereal armor for one more mana. I also sideboarded some Hardened Scales.

I built a Bogles deck using this video as a general guide. Yes, the deck is fairly simple-minded and non-interactive, but there is a really satisfying feeling when announcing "I'm attacking with my 8/8 Hexproof, First Strike, Trample, Life Link creature. Oh?, you have an edict effect? I'll crack my Windswept Heath, grab a Dryad Arbor and toss that 1/1 to the GY. I don't always win games, but when I do, I feel like a schoolyard bully! It's so satisfying being able to mulligan down to 5 cards and still have a darn good chance of a win.... Also, I traded all my older coronets for the kitties in scarves version

During my time playing the bogles deck over the spring, I've found that really only one temple garden is necessary so you can start a game with two colors. I replaced the other three gardens with the budget-friendly Sunpetal Grove. I've also found that Kor Spiritdancer is a HUGE target, since it's the only creature that actually dies to opponent's removal, they WILL kill it. Thus I only run two mainboard, kind of a thing where if it works its great, if not then you dont lose out on a lot. I replaced the other two with Silhana Ledgewalkers for consistency.

Thanks prof, I love (and need) modern deck techs. A suggestion: It would be very interesting if you reviewed some products that are originally non-intended for Magic use but fit our use. For example, don't you think the Krus Ikea box would be better and cheaper than the ultimate guard box for cube?

I created an ultra budget alternative to this deck using U/W. About 65$ paper and 18$ MTGO. It runs the mainstays of the Slippery Bogle and Ethereal Armor but subs all the really expensive cards with pillow fight enchantments like arrest, pacifism, guard duty and containment membrane to name a few. Alternatives to gladecover scout are Invisible stalker and fiendslayer paladin. It also runs a very smiple mana base of 4 Glacial Fortress, 7 islands and 11 plains. The side board can be a mix of personal wants and needs. I have totem armors in mine for those decks with board wipes.

Great video! I play this deck and I must say this one is the best deck tech video about it. You covered all the options. Spirit Link is great in the deck as a 1-2 of since it allows "double lifelink", it can work almost as removal... Oh, and it's awesome to use it against Eidolon of the Great Revel. If you play this deck at FNM, they will bring all the hate against it for the next ocation, so don't forget to include 2-3 Mana Tithes for the second event. This deck was all except budget before Khans of Tarkir block. Thanks to onslaught fetchlands and the reprint of Daybreak Coronet and Leyline of Sanctity in MM2015, it's a lot cheaper now.Thanks, Wizards. Pd: Sorry for bad english :s

Hi, I been playing Bogles for a long time now and I have some tips for new players. Bogles is a bit better than a budget brew with good results on mtgo online and in paper magic. Bogles is a strong tier 2 deck with a lot of game against the top tier decks. -Don't put a Daybreak Coronet on a Bogle with only one enchantment in a post-board game. You risk getting blown out by an abrupt decay or any enchantment removal as daybreak needs another aura. -Spirit Links can be enchanted on a Eidolon of the Great Revels, neutering the trigger as you don't lose any life. However, Burn is an excellent matchup for Bogles anyways. -The Professor didn't mention it but the one of Dryad Arbor is for sacrifice effects such as Liliana. You can fetch for Dryad in response to Liliana -2 and sac Dryad instead. Sometimes in a grindy game, Dryad can be be suited up and into the red zone. -Gaddock Teeg is excellent against Chalice of the Void, Engineered Explosives and Splinter Twin, all powerful cards against you. Especially as most decks sides out removal games 2 and 3. -Nature's Claim is awesome against Twin and Affinity but can be pretty bad against a resolved Chalice of the Void on one. Consider Unravel the Aether as a 1 or 2 of, test it out. -I know Leyline of Sanctity is fairly pricey but you need them against Junk/Jund which will try to discard your only creature in hand or best enchantment which is crippling. Almost must have -Ethereal Armor gets +1/+1 for the Leyline as well. This is true for any enchantment in the sideboard. -Know when to go ham with Kor Spiritdancer decks like Amulet Bloom or Burn almost cannot kill a 3/5 with totem armor and if you untap with Kor Spiritdancer, you can go off dealing massive damage and draw so many cards. -For Budget players, Burshland is similar to Horizon Canopy. For those with more money remember to keep at least a basic forest and 2 basic plains, blood moon is a thing. -EDIT: Important tip! Almost forgot! Mulligan aggressively! You MUST have a creature in your opening hand and preferably a hexproof dude. Keeping a hand with only a Daybreak and no enchantments is very risky, I won't advise to keep unless you believe in the heart of the cards. Bogles is possibly one of the better decks to win on a mulligan than most modern decks with low base resources and a lot of power in ethereal armor and daybreak. My Deck List 1 Dryad Arbor 1 Forest 2 Horizon Canopy 2 Plains 4 Razorverge Thicket 4 Temple Garden 4 Windswept Heath 2 Wooded Foothills // Creatures 4 Gladecover Scout 4 Kor Spiritdancer 4 Slippery Bogle // Spells 4 Daybreak Coronet 4 Ethereal Armor 4 Hyena Umbra 1 Keen Sense 3 Path to Exile 4 Rancor 4 Spider Umbra 2 Spirit Mantle 2 Unflinching Courage // Sideboard SB: 2 Gaddock Teeg SB: 4 Leyline of Sanctity SB: 3 Nature's Claim SB: 1 Path to Exile SB: 1 Pithing Needle SB: 2 Rest in Peace SB: 2 Stony Silence

Great video! Although I will point out that you switched the prices of the Umbras. Spider is around $1 each, with Hyena being up to $2.50. I love all these budget deck techs you've put up! I believe it was GP Vegas that I told you personally that the original Merfolk deck tech was the one that got me into Modern in the first place! I've seen/heard of so many other people that watched these videos and were inspired to break into Modern, when they realized it wasn't as expensive to enter as they thought.

that is I believe the underlined problem with modern and standard. (also other formats) is price. I know $250 is budget but still pricey. Which brings us to other problem reprints of things is hard for Wizards to do, for fact of collectors. I have spent my share to try and compete. I still can not get to top 8 or above. And my group hates all my builds and don't know why I can't win. Yes learning when to cast and what to cast is one of the problems I have, but competition against the same decks because everyone and their mother are playing it sucks.

I'm playing a blue/white Variant of these, with Aqueous Form instead of Rancor as it allows scry which is very helpful and a great evasion. The choice was mostly because this is what the mana base of my current card-pool allows, but the Blue also enables me to include cards such as the Invisible Stalker and a playset of Mana Leaks against a couple of decks in my Meta that I've had trouble on in early development. The fact that Keen Sight is here in this list makes me wonder whether I should perhaps try out curiosity. Maybe I'll swap it out for green/white (or try bant) with the given time, for that I want the relevant fetch- and checklands first :) For this weeks tournament I wanted to try something a little bold by including a Heliod's Pilgrim as an emergency tutor. Yes it's slow with its 3 Mana Cost, but the biggest threat in my meta are "your opponent sacrifices a creature" and the body it leaves makes a great defense for that. I managed to score 2nd place, which for my casual type of play was a moment to be rather proud of :D

Nice, I didn't know Bogles was the name everyone called this by. I usually just call it a Selesnya Enchantment Deck. In the version I made I have a playest of Silhana Ledgewalker because it sucks topdecking enchantment after enchantment waiting for a creature and It's nice having unblockable most of the time. I also like a pair of both sylvan library and sigil of the empty throne. Sunpetal Grove and Brushland are both nice budget lands options too.

I used to play this deck a lot when I first started playing modern and it was a lot of fun. Also having almost all of your lands tap for both colors is must so instead of replacing horizon canopy with basics I definitely reccomended Brushland instead. They are around 3 dollars a piece and are a great budget alternative, it's what I used to do.

Another thing to mention is Dryad Arbor with Fetchlands against your opponent's sac abilities. It's good to keep a fetch behind on board if your opponent is running something like Lilliana of the Veil, so you can fetch Dryad Arbor in response to her - ability and sac the Arbor instead, :P

Yup. One answer we hate to see players have against this deck, something in a black aggro deck. Probably that two mana instant that causes target player to sac a creature and lose a life. Budget of that could be devour flesh. But since we have seen languish wipe out the tokens and our creatures, these removals can be seen. But yeah. Amazing. And way more amazing because this deck doesn't have to deal with turn 3 batterskull! The bannings of lots of cards have really just influenced the game so well.

I would consider 10-30 $ a budget deck....not 250. Ok, for competetive enviroments sure, where some decks rise up to 1000$ but honnestly, the percentage of players with such decks is rather minimal. Honnestly i would wish for a new setpoint for a new format between modern and standard roughly around the return to ravnica block. Modern is in my opinion at a point where legacy was at the time modern was introduced.

***** $250 is pretty budget for a competitive modern deck. I spent money updating the Modern Event Deck BW Tokens (about ~$250 total) and it still gets stomped by everything. I eventually ditched it all to build something good, and it ended up costing about another $6-700 when all was said and done. Modern IS expensive, and this IS a relatively budget build for a deck that is annoying for many T1 and T2 decks to deal with.

Because sometimrd you want to be able to fetch Dryad Arbor in response to an edict effect. The deck usually relies on a single creature for most turns, and being forced to sacrifice it hurts quite a bit. Taking into account you can play with 3 mana, there's no need to rush the fetchlands, you can leave it in the field and crack it if the opponent uses a "sacrifice one creature" spell/ability.

I've always been a huge fan of Seal of Primordial over the Nature's Claim. It dodges and kills a Chalice of the Void set on 1, and when you need more damage but have nothing useful to cast it on, it will still buff up your Ethereal Armor. Not to mention it doesn't provide 4 life to the guy your trying to kill. Also Rest in Peace can be a good sideboard card.

I personally heavily suggest using Wooded Foothills. Tap that into Temple Garden, tap into Bogle. This is if you don't have a base land in your hand, setting for a Wooded Foothills and a Bogle with some enchantments should help early on. Also, Leylines of Sanctity pisses off burn decks.

I've brewed a completely off the wall version of this deck that focused on Verduran Enchantress and Mesa Enchantress for card draw, Nyxborn Shieldmate and Hopeful Eidolon as blockers that pumped Ethereal Armor and snag more cards. It also had Gladecover Scout as the main body, and Sigil of the Empty Throne as a field flooding bomb. Even with just basic lands, the deck got me pretty far at FNM.

Tolarian Community College this is why i dont play standard unless i can pull or trade what i need. I dont want to put all the money into cards that will most likely devalue once the set rotates out, and then im out a few hundred dollars. I usually play modern, and the only reason my deck is worth anything is because i had all the cards already, Im not a hardcore magic player by any means. Also for the lands for this deck you could also put in Sunpetal grove as they are probably one of the cheapest duel lands out there along with Temple of plenty.

+Tolarian Community College I've made a u/w standard legal mill deck that probably won't cost more than $20. I've yet to see a playable modern deck of that price. Even a simple non-competitive "let's have a fun time" vampire tribal deck for modern i built costed $100 without the mana base. Sure there are decks like Abzan control or Hangarback Abzan that cost a lot, but standard is way more budget friendly then modern is.

Horizon Canopy is the one card I don't have for the deck. I would never pay $60 each for them though. I would rather use Razorverge, Temple Garden, Heath, or even Brushland. Bogles is a great deck though. Definitely worth the cost. I have seen Bogles deck top 8 consistently at decently large modern events around the cities I have lived in. When you consider that my own deck comes out to about $650, and a $250 deck can still beat me (Bogles is actually one of my worst matchups), that adds up to VALUE.

Tolarian Community College There is one very important card that should be in there. What way is there to remove a hexproof creature? That's right if they make you, as a player, sacrifice it. You can bypass this by adding Dryad Arbor (land creature), it counts as a basic land card type. When your opponent wants you to sacrifice a creature, simply use a fetch land and search for the Dryad Arbor, put it into play and sacrifice it. This way you keep your hexproofed boggle powerhouse.
@poisonouslead85
@poisonouslead85 9 жыл бұрын
gerbillgrubb The way around that is a conditional sac that excludes the arbor. Like Celestial Flare on the declare blockers phase when the Bogle (or bogle-like) creature is attacking. Since you can't cheat the arbor into attacking on declare blockers, you have to sac a bogle.

For a solid Modern deck... $250 is quite budget, so inb4 people rant about that. Sure, you can build other decks for cheaper (and the Prof has shown some of them already; and you can check out other youtube channels to see this as well; one I recommend is GatherMagic as they have a "playing on a budget series, that not only shows deck techs, but also game play with the deck). Anyway, this deck makes other budget choices ineffective as well. If lots of people are playing Burn and other red decks, this will likely beat them (especially with the Unflinching Courages/Spirit Link/Daybreak Coronet creating tons of Lifegain to race with). Also, if looking to build this deck, I would recommend buying the Daybreak Coronet's now as they're at they're low due to the supply created by MM2015 reprinting. Due to casual demand though, these will start to tick up soon. Lastly, if you're not a PT/GP grinder, this is a great deck to pickup. First of all, even if you're playing at just your LGS, the deck is cheap(ish - especially compared to other "established" decks in the Modern format) and will allow you to make another cheap deck to switch up (so you don't get "hated out" by your meta... i.e. tons of sacrifice effects (which is why Fetchlands and Dryad Arbor are definitely helpful). Gameplay wise, this deck is highly linear. In other words, you do the same thing basically every game and it's quite easy to play as a beginner (through practice you learn sequencing and what to look out for/play around, but it is quite easy to understand, otherwise). That said, after some time, you may become bored with it, so you may want to look at other cheap decks so you can switch things up from time to time. Moreover, the deck isn't especially interactive (outside of attack/block choices) with your opponent, and some may find that a bit "boring" as well. There were a couple other points I was going to add... but they've slipped my mind.

Do you think Graceblade Artisan is a good replacement for Kor Spiritdancer for an even more budget build?
@Lux_Cygnus
@Lux_Cygnus 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Polson No, because you generally don't ever want to actually put the enchantments on the Kor Spiritdancer unless you absolutely have to. You only use the Kor Spiritdancer because she draws you more cards. Putting enchantments on her is a great way to get blown out; Since she doesn't have hexproof, she becomes a giant target for your opponent's removal.

@notjux
@notjux 9 жыл бұрын
+Khalid Mubarak I wouldn't recommend it in a competitive environment. The deck only runs 19 or 20 lands, so any auras that cost more than one mana need to be really strong. The ordeals are decent, but they're slower and nowhere near as powerful as Daybreak Coronet and Spirit Mantle. If you're playing casually though, I'm sure it's fine.

Hey prof! I was wondering why play unflinching courage when you can play armidillo cloak. Not only does the card not say "lifelink" meaning if you give it lifeline in addition to armidillo cloak, you gain double the life when the creature deals damage, but you can attach it to your opponents big creatures gaining the same amount of life they deal you, if necessary.

My friend used to have this deck (minus the Horizon Canopies), and i can confirm that it is boggling to play against. Against my burn it was 50/50 (if i could stop the lifegain), 8-Rack did a better job shutting it down (Ensnaring Bridge OP). He has Affinity now, and i have Dredgevine now.

Hey Professor, I built Blue Tron (I love control.), and play it at Monday Modern at my LGS. However, I always run into a problem: My meta is VERY aggro-heavy (most recent tournament I played Burn, Infect, Abzan Aggro, and Abzan Midrange) and I get run into the ground before I even get much control magic up. What modification(s) can I make to the deck to reflect the meta? Thanks!

I've built and played this deck ever since I saw Reid Duke play it in worlds. There are some obvious problems with this deck though. No bogles deck does not run the full play set of rancor. And now with shadow's over innistrad being out there's no need for four spirit mantle and there wasn't to begin with. In my version I am only running 1 spirit mantle and in place of the others the 4th rancor, a unflinching courage, and a gryff's boon from shadow's over innistrad.
@SirNarax
@SirNarax 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think Gryff's Boon is really all that good. Yeah it gets flying but flying creatures are not super uncommon in the format, and the recursion it has is just a little too high a manacost I feel. Keep in mind with spirit mantle you can block without doing anything to your creature.
