In this video series I'm going to look at a week's worth of mtgo trophies and try to glean some information about the meta. We are looking at a lot of spice and some condensed power around just a few strategies. Patreon: / kalikaiz

Thanks for the name-drop! Concerning Scholar of Athreos: Valakut Invoker was used for years due to its ability to also kill creatures. The present/recent metagame though, is too fast for that. Scholar has a 1/4 body (that is relevant), its ability is easier to use for EOT mini-pings and it also avoids hydroblast. HydroB (like strands) should actually not be played against walls combo, but ppl was doing it anyways :) The key point of last week lists, though, is the experimental manabase I was using with no dorks, and lots of land-fetch abilities. Keep up the good work!

I think a good feature would be deck recommendations. If affinity, terror, and burn are the top decks, what would you play this week, or what sideboard cards could be useful? If we see a shifting metagame this could be especially useful.
@kalikaiz11 ай бұрын
Alright this is a good consideration I'll try
@suchybobr11 ай бұрын
I think that was a very good video and bunch o great information about whole week champions, would like to see more. The only thing that should be said in my opinion, is that we are looking only at decks that won a trophy. It can give as a specific picture of the online meta, however it should be remembered, it does not take into consideration all population of decks and standings for them. Regardless, great work, keep it up!
@kalikaiz11 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely I should stress it's the "winners metagame" and doesn't really show what the meta is but what is doing well. Given that, if a winners meta is compromised of a large amount of one strategy.... Seems like pauper has a few pillars and everyone else is fighting for scraps sometimes

Great video! As far as glitters, to me it feels much more egregious than swiftspear ever did, when every shell gets to make ridiculously large creatures as early as turn 3, and draw more cards than fair blue decks in most cases. I just don’t understand why it feels like artifact decks consistently get to have everything in this format with the best card draw, biggest creatures, insanely good interaction (on the grixis side) I think it’s self explanatory that affinity has been banned to all hell in this format and as soon as they print a synergistic card like glitters it’s immediately the best thing to be doing. Very legacy delver-esque
@kalikaiz11 ай бұрын
The main reason here is the panel and wotc just never wanted to get rid of the archetype entirely (removing the lands) though to be honest it would probably be sweet to play affinity without the insane land power. IMO unban the affinity payoffs and ban 100% of artifact lands. That would be cool!
@Alex-bb4cr11 ай бұрын
@@kalikaiz I agree, artifacts are so busted in pauper that given a few unbans affinity would absolutely still be a playable archetype if lands are banned. I really do often wonder If they took out either the original or the duals if that would power it down enough - either make the deck BTFO’d by gorilla shaman or force them into a slower game plan with tap lands if they want maximum affinity. Obviously Jeskai wildfire yadda yadda. But overall, I think glitters is just egregiously overpowered in pauper. When I have the AUDACITY to tap out on turn 2, and get swung at for 10 flying damage immediately after I just throw up my hands. Not as bad as getting ponza’d into the dirt on turn 2 but the same ballpark.
@kalikaiz11 ай бұрын
@@Alex-bb4cr yeah I definitely feel that

Ha cool video, was wondering what your opinion on that fams list was. I dunno if I'd be brave enough to cut a bunch of preordain lol. I'm also a fan of looking at list archtypes that functionally do the same thing instead of worrying about breaking apart every iteration of all that glitters ie bw uw wur wr etc. makes it easier to think of proper sideboard strategies. This is something that has always annoyed me from how other analyst's perceive the meta.
@kalikaiz11 ай бұрын
The fams list was quite confusing. You can tell he put a lot of thought into it and it's a play style thing. I tried to do a similar one and it was overwhelming for me. I think it's important to see both the "real" and combined meta. To be honest jeskai glitter vs boros glitter almost doesn't even matter. I think that a macro is useful I'm glad you liked it

Yeah! It’s helpful in a lot of situations. First, it gives you gas in early game. In middle game, it gives you more R mana if you have mono mountain. And when you cascade it, often gives you the chance to play other treats even if are tapped out. I suggest to try it.

So grouping all “ glitters decks” together seems very flawed logic wise, it would be like grouping all decks that used counter spell, or all decks that used bolt. Decks should be grouped by their gameplay not their shared cards, UR control played completely different from UB or Mono U terror decks, but all use terror as a finisher. Glitters as a card is a finisher, but is used differently between the BW, the jeskai and the UW version, let alone the boros deck running it.
@kalikaiz11 ай бұрын
The only deck that played glitters that wasn't the same shell with 2-3 different cards was the boros one. Disagree. If we had a bogles deck I wouldn't have put it there
