This is why I'm glad I gave up on the game when they banned skullclamp and then the rest of Affinity decks between 2004 and 2005. I do pay attention to what is going on, but it's more for nostalgia sake and not for me to actually play competitively anymore. (And yes, I was a decent player, with DCI ratings to outright qualify me for events.) According to interviews and articles from Wizards and Inquest magazines, Garfield and Rosewater did not get along or see eye-to-eye about the direction the game should be going. (Such as the Reserved List, which Garfield disagreed with.) Also according to Garfield, the game has long outlasted it life-cycle. I have no real problems with things like Universes Beyond or the like. But Secret Lairs, draft/collectors packs/boxes and the like have been bad decisions. Dropping the regular printing of a Core Set, was a bad idea. Discarding the 3 set block structure is a terrible decision. There has been basically nothing bad bad decisions since Schneider left. It isn't just Hasbro and its influence over WotC. There has been rot since before Garfield left.

Designers are so bad at this point they can only "return to" or "remaster" sets or go to a universe beyond. Fucking whale investors looking for raised/textured foils and serial cards are gonna keep this shitty ship afloat. I wish LGS' could survive without this shit but they seem like they're stuck.
@Y2KNW2 ай бұрын
The best part about a remaster set is that anyone who was there for it the first time can almost painlessly skip those releases. I'm sure the remaster sets are just there to trick Starcity or Card Kingdom into each buying a seacan of boxes so the set isn't a total flop.
@yurisei67322 ай бұрын
LGS are increasingly surviving without MTG to be fair. One of my locals has dropped their MTG shelf space significantly in favour of stocking Lorcana, One Piece, Dragonballz, and Flesh and Blood. They could have dropped space from Weiss Schwarz or Yugioh, games that sell poorly, or from Pokemon, but they chose to reduce how much MTG they were stocking. Another store swapped some MTG space for some bad indie called Achroma, that's how little MTG is worth on shelves these days.

It's been like this since the beginning of 2024, it's just gimmick set after gimmick set: 1. MTG does detectives - a set for people who specifically like one subgenre of novel. 2. MTG does Fallout - a set for people who specifically like one video game franchise. 3. MTG does cowboys - a set for people who specifically like one video game franchise. 4. MTG does Assassin's Creed - a set for people who specifically like one video game franchise. 5. MTG does furries - a set for people who specifically like one subgenre of novel. 6. MTG does thriller - a set for people who specifically like one subgenre of movie. 7. MTG does mariokart - I don't even know who this is for but it's still not me. 8. MTG does Marvel - a set for people who specifically like one movie franchise. 9. MTG does Star Wars - a set for people who specifically like one subgenre of movie. 10. MTG does Final Fantasy - a set for people who specifically like one video game franchise. 11. MTG does Harry Potter again - a set that pretends a previous gimmick set is nostalgic. The only potentially good sets between 2024 and 2026 are Tarkir and Lorwyn, but as you say, Lorwyn will probably be a gimmick set too, and I personally wasn't into Tarkir, so that means there's no saving grace at all. Part of the reason they dropped the 3-set block structure was because it meant that someone who happened not to like the theme of the block wouldn't be buying new standard product for months, but now they've gone to making sets so aesthetically niche that it has the same effect. The benefit of doing standalone sets is that you can move on quickly. It would normally be OK that I didn't enjoy Tarkir, because during Return to Tarkir, I could be looking forward to the next set. But that doesn't work when every set is this absurdly niche gimmick because it creates a high chance of someone not liking several sets in a row. Then you double down on having niche gimmicks with having intolerable worldbuilding, and that chance goes even higher. So, when you knock out the sets that had bad worldbuilding or unavoidably will have it because they're hard to enjoy regardless of gimmick, which is detectives, cowboys, mariokart, star wars and harry potter, and you knock out the universes beyond sets because they're not MTG, which is fallout, AC, marvel and Final Fantasy, then there are only 4 sets in 2 years that I could even have a chance of enjoying, and those ride on whether I like Redwall, whether I like 90s horror, whether I like one of MTG's previous planes, and then a wildcard in Lorwyn. Anyone who happens not to be a fan of those three very specific things will get nothing out of this entire 2 year plan. It's ridiculous.

I remember when I wasnt playing magic and I was at a store for a tournament and I asked what the weird decorations were for "oh those are cars for magic. Theres cars and your creatures can jump in and drive them" and I thought it was the dumbest thing Id ever heard and that magic had really jumped the shark. But after coming back, i appreciate Kaladesh for the work they did to make it conceptually rich and unique but still feel aesthetically cohesive with mtg. But with post covid mtg, it feels like its just slamming hats on things like its a late 00s Valve game. That being said, I am looking forward to the space opera set because I can see them making that work with like magical robots and space ships and I do love constructs. The Fumori empire and new creature types that arent just [generic word]-folk could be promising. You can explore the concept of what a plane is. Maybe to have "outer space" is actually an inverted plane. A massive sphere thats really the empty space where a plane once was and its like a cavity in the blind eternities with debree and asteroids and constructs to travel and survive in. Instead of walking on a planes surfice, its like walking on the inside of a bubble. Just...dont do "magic powered" ray guns or modern nonsense like New Capenna

I returned to Magic back in 2018. However, whilst I did buy product like Challenger precons and JumpStart, and some old cards for Commander / Cube, I also sold cards worth more than £5 Inc LED. I was a bit premature during COVID and left money on the table (that's ok), but was more than happy to sell because like yourself I had no faith in WotC / Papa Hasbro's stewardship. I did buy a Strixhaven Collector Booster due to the mystical archive. The card quality is night and day compared to older 90s sets. There is NO card quality! WotC have one main job and they cannot do that right! Hence, the only cards I will buy are old cards for a cube. I came back to MTGA for Bloomburrow and am enjoying casual Magic. That's as far as it goes e.g. in paper, JumpStart and Cube. I'm have mixed feelings about never leaning into Magic during the 90s - although I did buy cards - but largely escaped the money pit. I'm 50 and don't play mainly cuz of the continual monetary hikesvandvoutput. And shoddy shops and shady players. Thus year us the first I've played and bought cards in almost 10 years. Go Bloomburg I hope Darkmourn is is at least as good

3 or 4 years ago i updated my two commander decks with every new set, looked at the spoilers, got into the mechanics, thought about synergies, looked daily on cardmarket, sometimes build a new deck to try. At somepoint it just became to much to many new cards that are to powerfull. I have not bought anything for 1/2 a year. Also thinking about selling a lot of my cards (i started to play 20 years ago and never thought about that). I will keep my sisay and Korvold deck, some cards to change or that i just like and the rest just needs to go. Now i spend the money that went into cards on books.

Daily reminder that for the past 3 years, there have been 20+ Commander precons per year. 23 in 2022, 22 in 2023, and 24 in 2024. Let's see if 2025 will push those numbers all the way to 30. Lots of Commander opportunities in the mentioned sets.

The three-set block structure was truly an 'it ain't broke' way of developing paced, proper attachment to a plane/story setting. There's simply no reason to care now because you're not given enough time to do so any more. Good settings and stories get the same 'blink and you'll miss it' treatment as everything else... And I say this as someone who stopped playing actively about 20 years ago and follows the game/lore/buys the odd single now.

I dont really mind more modern tech on some planes if its done well. My big problem with the game is too much new poorly thought out product and only one set per plane. I dont care if they churn out secret lairs,remaster set and universes beyond, but please give us a full story in the cards. Let us stay on Bloomburrow for a little longer. @huddleaw2 ай бұрын
@@person-ol5uf it's different than the original mechanic because you have to track it whether or not you have a day/night card in play or not. It's a pain in the butt to keep track of, especially in commander, to the point where if a card says day/night I immediately cut it. It was a mechanic clearly made for Arena online play and not Parker play.

1-year player here. Here’s my maybe hot take: The “Fortnite-ification” of mtg is definitely for the younger audience to come in and mix the consumer base and I don’t see the issue. They know that to bring them in, having beyond sets and wacky ideas is the best way to get eyes on the game. I can see the casual fun of it and enjoy it to a degree. I’m sure that for the many of yall who have played so long see the issues and frustrations because it’s not the game you used to know, and I get it. But if something never evolves it will never grow. All that to say, the things that should never be glanced over are consistency within stories, quality of product, and ease of access.

I for one actually really dig the whole Neon Dynasty Kamigawa theme, even if it's blurring the lines between magic and technology. Their tech and stuff are based on enchantments and the spirit realm. Incidentally one of my favourite games of all time is Cyber Shadow, a game where you play as a robot ninja and occasionally enter a digital spirit realm for plot reasons or to get an upgrade or unlock a door in the real world.

The only reaching out WOTC is doing for younger folks is also swiftly followed by a hard shove away from the game by destroying standard, and most LGS that im aware of who run FNM for commander are dominated by these multi thousand dollar decks filled with expensive reserve list cards that only a small handful of people can even afford in the first place. Not to mention regular booster packs costing easily twice as much as when most of us older players started with and thats for just set boosters. Wanna crack some packs from "premium" set (because the already high cost of regular booster packs isn't allready high or premium enough)? Get ready to pay double or more the cost of even a normal booster pack. The high cost of sealed product hurts draft. It hurts new players who are trying to build a collection from nothing. Its just all around a bad thing. MTG has the perception that it is super super expensive and especially in these times if WoTC has any chance at all of getting younger people into the game that is a perception they gotta break.

I was both excited and sceptical. WotC or rather the designers, knocked it out of the park! Ok, the power creep (looking at you WAR and ELD - loved, LOVED ELD), but NEO was so much better than I anticipated. Innistrad Remastered? I never thought I hear myself say, "Seriously, this shit AGAIN!?" about Innistrad but here we are ... A return to Strixhaven in 2026!? Seriously? The creative tank is that low? Designers burnt out churning out innumerable Commander Precons and cards. Whilst the latter half of 2024 looks good for Magic (am intrigued at how Foundations will work in Standard), 2025 looks like jumping the shark. If they give the NEO treatment to Lorwyn it might be redeemed. But too much product, too rushed - am fearful that there's not enough creative space / juice left. Wacky Racers and Space Opera? Oof!
@yurisei67322 ай бұрын
Yeah Neon Dynasty was doing gimmick set right. Still very gimmicky, but with a feeling of depth, that they were able to insert via references to Kamigawa's history, plus having a good range of tropes to choose form to create distinct clans. A big part of the failing of Karlov Manor and Thunder Junction is that they feel homogenous - regardless of colour, every character is a detective or a cowboy and has access to all the set's mechanics.

Sad but true. I've got a lot of hours in fallout, probably close to 1k across 3, nv, and 4 and I have never once thought "I need fallout as a magic set!" If I want fallout I will just go play fallout.............. I mean you can't tell me you've done all there is to do in those games when there's a never ending cycle of mod designers pumping out new content. Most players haven't even touched fallout 1 or 2 yet they sit here thinking we need a fallout lore set in a card game that has nothing to do with it? Insanity. Not to mention fallout and bethesda are at an all time low in player confidence from all their own greedy BS and that's the time they pick to crossover. hilarious

@ the OP Good point about the lack of innovation. in my opinion MTG seems to be following the blueprint that the majority of the entertainment industry has used. Aka it’s too risky for Hollywood to create any new stories so they just keep remaking(and ruining in many cases) the existing stories that were popular. What they all fail to realize is greatness is driven by passion not profits in my opinion. Wotc is just setting itself up to be replaced and at that point Hasbro will jettison it like the dead weight it will become.
