Malcs GX Why replace them? Amtrak wastes money & retire their engines too young! Already the Charger engines in one of the videos on You Tube had mechanical problems as they were hooked up to the P42's. Funny the Genesis engines worked 100% fine ... But the Siemens deisels got a 0! 😱

@@haroldalexis4200 Amtrak is forced to retire engines so they can keep making money. Locomotives do start to show age sometimes in their younger years . Obviously Amtrak cannot make money by using locomotives that can't function properly. I wouldn't call it wasting money, that money is put to a good use. Keep in mind, as a 3.4 billion dollar company, things can be tight and difficult.

Malcs GX not all hope is lost Amtrak is currently receiving chargers only for the California the Washington and Midwest services to my knowledge the p42 will still be going strong on the Northeast corridor and all around the lower states

Yuri Barney Ikari It’s horrible in comparison to the horns they used to use on the Genesis locomotives. I have the Veterans unit from the 2017 run and it’s way horn is better than this horn.

Hey, I discovered the quillable horn on this by accident. MTH didn't advertise it, but it is there. If you have the app, you have to double tap (and drag it I think) until the button turns gray, and you can play it like you would on the steam engine. I've had the sound set for a few weeks and didn't know it was there.

Good demo & run on this Genesis engine. My first ride on them on Amtrak when in 1995. Hooked up to The F 40 PH from Toronto Canada to Albany, New York. Was that a surprise ride i didn't see it until the cars was turning on a curve! But one problem i have with many of the audio's of the P 42's they all don't sound at all like the prototype! I noticed this several times on the HO scale versions of them (P 42) GE is more mid low pitched with hiss, GM or EMD is more mid range whining sound. GE, ALCO, sound similar. The U Boats, P 30 CH, The 840 / 840 B Dash all have that low pitched hiss sound! Even in semi quiet low pitch when not fully throttled. EMD is higher pitched in that semi quiet mode. This test very well otherwise glad you presented this well worth watching. 👍✅🚆🚅

In 2015 I had an opportunity to ride the Amtrak from Boston to Chicago and I had never been on a train before other than riding the subway which I only did when I lived in Boston one of the crew members insisted that I go check out the observation car I was thoroughly impressed to see how beautiful the scenery was despite how fast we were moving

Well apart from the fact your train consists of 1970s-era Amtrak cars and that you made your station stop on top of the bridge (hehe, I'll admit, that last one is funny for sure), excellent review Eric! I love the GE Genesis diesel locomotives and the Amtrak Phase V paint scheme like the one you have here is my favorite paint scheme for them. MTH made some nice Premier Line models of them and I'm glad you reviewed one of them here for us to see.

I wonder if models of the new CT Rail engines and cars we have going through Connecticut will come out in the future. Took a ride on one the first weekend when it was free down to New Haven. I like the look of them using a freight engine compared to the Amtraks like the engine shown here that also run through the same line.

I have the bad boy with the phase III scheme. But if I remember correctly. The soundset doesn’t match the bodywork in that the unit numbers are off. Still awesome to run alongside my Alco C420 D&H though

Nice, maybe you can run it with your F40PH. Sadly, where I live Amtrak comes through at the middle of the night but the Genesis is still my favorite engine. I have one by MTH but it’s PS1.

Great Looking Loco ! I have a few of these MTH P42s, one from the last run before this and one from the run before in PS3 .The horn from from the first PS3 Release is the best. But the prime mover sound sets are not that accurate . Believe it or not my P42 with Ps1 has the best GE sound set. Just my personal opinion.....nice review. ( :

Julian Koehler It may be what I think, but it’s an educated guess based upon the number of defective legacy engines I’ve seen. As one example, the shop I work for got in three ES44ACs, brand new. Out of those three, only one worked. One had a dead short which immediately fried the board, and the other was just DOA. As for MTH, we have five engines waiting to go back due to piss poor quality control. It’s sad. Trains just aren’t reliable anymore.
