@@chainsawcharl1e677 You may know about this already, but for those not in the know, the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America has acquired ownership of the 3985 (and 5511) and is well into the process of restoring both to operational condition in their shops in Silvis, IL.

I went and saw 4014 a couple years ago when it came to Omaha NE. What an experience to see Big Boy in person for the first time. The whistle was beautiful.

I own Lionel’s Vision Big Boy #4005. Ever since the beginning of my appreciation for the hobby Lionel has always been my #1 locomotive manufacturer. I love my big boy, but I must admit, I am a little jealous.

I have noticed in this video and the video in JDstucks channel about this last run of the big boys, that both models (from this run) has the chuff sound settings default to what sounds like two chuffs per revolution instead of the usual four. This is a simple fix by going to the DCS settings: Menu-> sound-> Chuff rate-> and press 4 to see a difference. Did anyone else notice this?

That is a good looking engine Eric. The gloss paint really sets everything off nicely. After watching this video and the one where you reviewed the other MTH Big Boy it seems that the restoration Big Boy's smoke unit does not have a fan. Other than that MTH certainly did its best on this engine. I also prefer seeing the gloss black tender rather than what Lionel did. Looks much more prototypical even though UP decided on using 3985's tender since it was already set up for oil and then painted it later on.

If the PFA soundset is the primary reason for spending the big $$$ for a new model, you can just save money by upgrading any existing PS 3.0 Big Boy by loading the updated sound set into the older Big Boy via the DCS system. That being said, all other reasons considered, if you have the money then by all means buy the new model.

Very Nice Eric. I have the older version MTH 4014, 20-3575-1 like you do that was reviewed by you a couple years ago. I actually like the PFA sounds from the older unit, but like this glossy black better than the flat black. Are those UP passenger cars Lionel or Golden Gate? They look really nice. Keep up the good work!

Going off of the video i had taken from the golden spike 150 tour, the locomotive and tender were very shiny anyway. So this one is more accurate to the events than that of Lionel.

This MTH model is just as good as LIONEL's VISION-LINE Big Boy. The only difference I see is the Glossy Black Paint job of the MTH model version, and the "BLOW DOWN SMOKE EFFECT" from the VISION-LINE model. The whistle and sounds of MTH are ON THE MARK. And if you are a bit concerned when it comes to the price, MTH wins that one by a landslide.

Since I have my first grandson I want to start a collection for him. I purchased a Lionel LionChief 2.0 Berkshire (Red & Green Christmas model) and a starter set. I want to start collecting Polar Express rolling stock and accessories and noticed that there must be two level of cars, some are in the $70+ range and others in the $150+ range. What’s the main difference? I’m looking to purchase more higher-end engines and rolling stock and will be purchasing a Legacy Control system. Any advice? Thank you and I very much enjoy your videos. You’re the only one who takes the time to fully explain things.

Hey Eric is the sound system in the body or in the tender and they are a beast both in real life and in the modeling world because I have one myself with sound but DCC functions due to my layout being HO scale and hope tour foot is healing really well

i have one if these but the wireless drawbar set up sucks, it seems to have a really hard time connecting. it randomly gains and loses it’s connection, it only stays constant if i hold up the drawbar against the tender side and i have no clue how to fix it

I think the chuffs per rev need to be doubled on the big boy if I’m hearing that correctly. Other than that it’s an absolute masterpiece 👌🏻

Yeah! Why did MTH think we would not notice there were only 2 chuffs per rev. The staggared chuffs are great, but there should be twice as many. Come on MTH: fix this!

​@chainsawcharl1e677 the chuff rate can be changed from 1 chuff per revolution up to i believe 16 chuffs per revolution, so you can choose how many you want and eric probably didn't feel like changing it or prefers it that way, so mth didn't try to scam us or anything, it probably just shipped with the 2 chuff rate as default
