you are right but VU has always tried to give their students the knowledge of the basics. they try to teach every student in a difficult way so that when there are new advanced ways in future they will not feel hasitant to understand that. means in simple, starting from basics and adding on the latest as a bonus. if you will understand the basics you will know the subject in depth. its like you know how to make a cofee manually and you also know how the coffee maker makes it. both are fine but coffee maker saves you time but it doesnt have the taste of manually made coffee.
