MTN Nigeria 5G Modem Review and Speed Test

I just picked mine up today. The speed at their Abuja office was 500mbps but between 65-110mbps at my home location. For context, my older 4g MTN HynetFlex does between 25-50mbps. I'm hoping the speed gets faster as their coverage expands but 2x speed is better than what I used to get. Honestly, most people wont need the 5g thing, especially if you already get decent speeds. I'm my case, it is really not going to make much difference to my remote work. For gaming, I still use Fiber, which is better but can go off for days when the cables get cut somewhere. I think most of us are really just getting 5g because it's the latest thing. The lark of unlimited "no FUP" plan on MTN makes the upgrade almost not worth it. At least that my case.

Thanks for this video man. I’d like to know, though, if you can select 4G on the router. I did some digging and found that the router supports several 4G bands alongside 5G, so I’m curious. The antennas in there are good enough to give me a boost with even 4G.

Nice that MTN has finally introduced 5G in Africa. I wonder if the network speed is going to be consistent when fully implemented though... And regarding your 4G speeds. Is MTN network just slow in Nigeria or what?! I'm usually able to get pings as low as 25-30ms on my mobile network in Cameroon and am able to download files weighing over 6GB in under 25 mins when the network isn't disturbing. 5-6 mb/s seems really slow to me as even my upload speeds rarely go below 20ms without serious network issues.

What were you doing with 5mbps? That would kill me. I use mtn Hynet and it’s about 25mbps on average. I have a feel of this 5g service because I use gigabit connections on my local network. Moving and streaming files on my local network is a breeze. Can’t wait for the data price list.

youd still get over 100 ping regardless. at best 90 ping. u get those high ping because the game dosent have a server for african players same as other games.

The 5G technology is just good on mobile phone. But when it comes to speed, 5G is still in lower rank to fibre optics. My company has been using this technology before MTN planned on receiving the license.

What do you mean by 5.6mbps is your current internet speed? Valor no dey bobo us. MTN 4G on my phone reaches 175mbps talk less of a more powerful or outdoor router which would get more. Even 3G is faster than 5.6mbps x🤣 Did MTN sponsor this?😏

It all depends on your location. My 4G modem sometimes is slower than 5.6mbps. Other places it's a lot faster. The quality of the network varies from place to place

What's the point of having a faster internet speed when the data plan isn't unlimited. I am waiting for starlink internet by Elon musk which is scheduled to commence services in Nigeria next month. Starlink internet data plan is unlimited with an average internet speed of 100mbps which means you can download files at 12MB/S. For me, that's enough as long as the data plan is truly unlimited. I am sure Elon musk will make starlink internet monthly subscription price affordable. 20k per month is likely going to be the price for Nigerians and I am all in. Edit: Starlink internet router can connect 128 devices so if you are living in a block of flats building, you can even share your data and data subscription payment with your neighbors though this will likely reduce your internet speed since a lot of people will be connected to the router at the same time. The downside of starlink internet is it needs electricity to work. So no electricity, no internet just like the MTN 5g router in this video. I don't recommend it if you don't have an inverter or a means of having 24 hours electricity in your home.
