I love this video and I love flying the MTO as a fixed wing pilot of several hundred hours, the move to Gyros was one of the best decision I've ever made and that doesn't happen often

Hey Randy...Yes I have it on an aluminum flat trailer that I push into the sea at the beach, river or lake. I have here the three options and just drop it and pick it once I finish flying it. If you already fly RC gyros, then you know that you have to pre-rotate. In real ones like these MTO’s, 200 rpms., are the minimum target before pulling mall the way back, so the blades can get the wind while it moves forward to reach more than those 200’s, in order to make it mo ve to gain the blades speed and turn faster and faster until they reach the speed that will lift it from the ground or let it fly and jump out of the water to begin your flight. But after you pull back all the way and p it start running, you must pay attention and send the stick little by little forward, looking for less angle in order to increase rpms. Because if you keep it all the way back, the blades will act as a brake. So once you start moving forward and pull the stick back, start pushing if forward slowly while the gyro is gaining ground speed and try to balance it raising a little bit the nose wheel. One important thing to understand, is that to pre rotate in ground is simple because you use the wheel brakes to hold it, but in the water is different because once you start the engine,. it start moving forward. So you have to be quite prepared to know what you have to do. The good thing is you have a lot of space to move around. I would recommend to learn first on wheels and the on floats. For wheels many can teach you but try to have an MTO experienced pilot. Then the best in the world for teaching you on floats is a guy named Peter Wicander. Now, if you already fly real airplanes, it will be the simplest thing for you to fly it in just few hours. The harder part is the take off from ground or water. The easy one is to land it and easier and softer in water. To fly it is almost like a plane, except for few differences like you can turn it on it self if you learn how. Mine has very few hours and I am selling it with wheels and with the floats, because now I want to by the Cavalon. If you need to know more about about what I have learned and you want me to explain you, please let me know. Regards.

Hey Felix ! Believe it or not, I have NO advice, NO suggestions and NO complaints. I've been a FW pilot for thirty years and don't even have an opinion, other than I love it !. I just want to say great video and thanks for sharing !! This is living the life ! I have been trying to find gyro instruction in my area for three years, with no success, but I HAVE to experience this side of flying. These are amazing aircraft, that don't get the same respect here, as in Europe. I just don't understand that. But, it's growing. Keep the videos coming and safe skies !

Dear Randy...thank you for your words. Yes, it is amazing to fly these wonderful aircrafts. Before buying this Gyro I used to fly a Challeger II and even did fly it on pontoons. By the way, it was a tandem but with floats only one person can fly it. Not with this one, specially if you use the long rotor blades (8.80 mts). After reading and watching so many videos on KZbin, I could see that it was the safest aircraft, because in case of an engine failure, you can land at very low speed and stop in just 20-30 feet. And with a some good wind even in less than that. If you have the chance of giving it a try, do it and try to learn how to fly it. It is a slow enjoyable flight and very stable because it is not a fix wing. Here you are hanging from the main rotor and turbulence does not make you jump around so easy. Mine has a Rotax 914. Regards.

That's great Felix ! I've been watching you later video on floats too. Do you trailer it, or keep it near the water ? Also, did you build yours from a kit ? Here, we have no choice (LSA rules). I can't wait. The closest instructor is several hundred miles from me, so it's just not practical, but I'll get there. I've watched every conceivable video on gyros and even went through a "Gyro Ground School" online. I've even built and flown a couple of R/C gyros. So, I have a good understanding on how they operate and perform. Not as good as your "advisors" in the comments I'm sure, but a fairly good understanding lol! Look forward to your future videos and would love to see yours in person one day. Blue skies my friend !

Well, go and take a close look but if you decide to buy one, keep an eye on the german ones and then look for a good trainer who already knows the MTO or CALIDIUS well. If you already fly, transition is quite simple. There are some diferences and basically related to the way you take off, but once you understand and do it several times, it is quite simple. The fuselage speed is “0” mph ok. Correct but the main blade propeller tip is ( depending of diameter) +/- 320 mph and with correct attack angle. Many people think about girocopter/ helicopter can fly stopped but the propeller is in movement. This is no possibility with fixed wing plane
@felixmalpica4386
@felixmalpica4386 6 жыл бұрын
Yes my friend Darrell. When we say zero speed forward, we refer to zero ground speed. Wind speed and ground speed are two different things. An aircraft can show an air speed of 60 knots and be barely moving forward. When an aircraft is facing a strong wind it keeps flying but can’t move forward fast. Where I live, north winds blow sometimes at 50 miles per hour and I can even fly my gyro backwards. Regards.

IF YOU PAY ATTENTION AT THE VIDEO, WHEN IT BEGINS I WROTE: ZERO SPEED FORWARD. NEVER MENTIONED "ZERO AIR SPEED". OF COURSE AIR SPEED IS NEEDED TO HOVER. IF NOT, THE ROTOR SPEED WOULD SLOW DOWN AND THE GYRO WOULD LOOSE ALTITUD FAST AND THE PILOT WOULD HAVE TO PUSH THE NOSE DOWN TO KEEP THE BLADES TURNING FAST TO KEEP THE GYRO FLYING.
@stol41
@stol41 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for publishing the video. I just have a question about "0 speed": this means that you descend vertically and the airflow meets the rotor blades straight upward. How do they maintain the rotational speed having a slight positive pitch angle?
@felixmalpica4386

Depends on the wind speed blowing in front of you. If it is quite strong, you can even climb or take off vertically like a helicopter. And even fly backwards.

If you turn the gyrocopter into the wind with a high angle of attack While powering back to idle air speed could drop two near zero momentarily but he’s gonna have to pitch down to regain forward momentum to keep air flowing through the main blades but he cannot hold zero speed indefinitely in other words he’s matching forward air speed with incoming Headwinds that will Give you near zero airspeed and it’s actually not zero airspeed it’s what the Peto tube can pick up from the Headwind it’s a very slow controlled flight using the headwind to your advantage to mentain the gyrocopter flying

Yes Alex, I’ll explain you...I am sure you know that normally during the day, the brease or wind always blows from the sea to the ground right? Because the water is cooler than ground, so the cool air always attacks the warm. And why? Because warm air raises and the cool one which is heavier, moves close to ground and tries to fill up the empty space. By the way...at night the brease blows in the oposite way, because ground cools dawn faster than water. I’m sure you know that. Anyhow...beside let me tell you that here in this area there are reefs, very shallow waters and frontal waves which some times are high and turn dangerous, in case one might cover my floats and we don’t want that. So I have to take off NOT facing the wind and NOT facing those waves, So, of course it takes a loooooooonger run for not having the wind in front of my gyro’s nose. And because in the water there is more resistance than in the flat solid floor to move forward. So please understand that one thing is to see someone doing it in a video and another, doing it in real life. Thanks for watching...

YES GUYS...WE, WHO FLY GYROS, DO KNOW THAT OF COURSE WE HAVE TO COMPENSATE HEADING AGAINST WIND INCREASING POWER, SO THEY KEEP FLYING WHEN GROUND SPEED IS "0". THIS COMMENT IS FOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT GYROS ARE. EVEN SOME PILOTS IGNORE THAT AUTOGYROS DO NOT STALL LIKE AIRPLANES. AND YES...THEY SINK AND LOOSE ALTITUD. WHEN I SAW A GYRO FLYING FOR THE FIRST TIME HERE, I DID NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY WERE. GET IT?

YES, ALL THE PEOPLE WHO FLY GYROS KNOW THAT OF COURSE WE HAVE TO FLY THEM FACING OR HEADING AGAINST THE WIND AND USING POWER, TO BE ABLE TO KEEP ALTITUD WHILE FLYING WITH GROUND SPEED "0". WHO KNOW NOTHING DO NOT KNOW IT OR UNDERSTAND THIS. THIS COMMENTS AND VIDEOS ARE FOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT GYROS ARE. EVEN SOME FIX WING PILOTS, IGNORE THAT AUTOGYROS DO NOT STALL THE SAME WAY AS AIRPLANES. AND YES THEY SINK AND YES, THEY LOOSE ALTITUD FOR ONE SIMPLE REASON: GRAVITY. WHEN I SAW A GYRO FLYING FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME, I DID NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY WERE. SO WITH THESE VIDEOS, I TRY TO EXPLAIN IN A SIMPLE WAY TO GUYS WHO DO NOT KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT IT, WHAT IS LIKE TO FLY TYHEM. And what's so amazing about 'no stall'? Gyrocopters are not able to stall, as far as the rotor turns, they just lose height slowly. That's what they are teaching you at school - physics.
@trevorram4
@trevorram4 9 жыл бұрын
Bull Moose The rotor turns only in a headwind, usually created by forward momentum. During flight and then reducing to no forward momentum will cause a slow loss of height until the rotor rpm drops enough, then it will most definitely stall (translated "not enough lift"), and then gyro meets gravity, unless you are high enough to manouver a recovery. I think he may have pointed the nose into a strong headwind in order to try to balance the loss in height with the loss in forward momentum. I have seen video of gyros hovering a few feet off the ground on a runway in strong headwinds with no forward momentum. Mind you, not fully "power off" but still very cool...

HI BULL: NOT AMAZING FOR YOU WHO KNOWS ABOUT IT. BUT FOR THOSE WHO KNOW NOTHING LIKE ME SEVERAL YEARS AGO...AND PERHAPS LIKE YOU A WHILE AGO, IT MEANS A LOT. YOU CAN NOT TEACH A KID ALGEBRA IF YOU DON´T TEACH HIM HOW TO MULTIPLY FIRST. YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THAT SITES LIKE THIS, ARE FOR ALL KIND OF PEOPLE AND NOT ONLY FOR SUPER BRAINS. OF COURSE, ALL YOU SAY IS RIGHT AND GYROS MUST HAVE TO FACE THE WIND TO KEEP THE ROTOR SPINNING. AND YES, WIND MUST BE THERE TO KEEP THE ROTOR TURNING FOR NOT LOOSING ALTITUD. I JUST WANTED TO MARK THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AIRPLANE AND A GYRO FOR TO THOSE (NOT LIKE YOU OF COURSE), WHO DO NOT KNOW THAT THIS AIRCRAFT CAN BE HOLD IN THE AIR FOR SOME TIME WITH ZERO GROUND SPEED, AND FOR AS LONG AS IT GETS THE WIND INTO THE BLADES MAKING THEM BE TURNING WITH ENOUGH SPEED TO GENERATE LIFT. IF YOU FLY GYROS I AM QUITE SURE THAT LIKE MANY OTHER PILOTS, YOU HAVED LANDED AGAINST STRONG WINDS EVEN IN A VERTICAL WAY. AND THAT IS ZERO GROUND SPEED RIGHT? FOR ME (I DON´T KNOW IF FOR YOU) AND I AM SURE THAT FOR SOME GUYS WHO FLY BOTH (AIRPLANES AND GYROS), DO FEEL AND KNOW THAT GYROS LET THE PILOT FORGET A LITTLE ABOUT STALL SPEED. GYROS FORGIVE SPEED MISTAKES MORE THAN FIX WINGS. AND YOU KNOW IT...BECAUSE YOU HAVE THOSE BIG BLADES TURNING WITH A HUGE ENERGY THAT GIVES TIME TO CORRECT, WHILE IN THE FIX WING THERE IS NOTHING. NOW, IF I USE SIMPLE WORDS HERE, IS BECAUSE I AM QUITE SURE AND UNDERSTAND THAT MANY GUYS (LIKE ME SEVERAL YEARS AGO), WHO KNEW NOTHING ABOUT GYROS, MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN KNOWING MORE, COMMING TO THESE PAGES TO READ ABOUT IT. I AM SURE THAT NOT ALL OF THEM ARE SO PROFESIONALS LIKE YOU. THE BLACK PART OF THESE PAGES THAT I DO NOT LIKE AND UNDERSTAND, IS WHY SO MANY GUYS COME HERE JUST LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO CRITICISE, INSTEAD OF DOING SOMETHING POSITIVE TO HELP OTHERS WHO KNOW LITTLE OR NOTHING, TO HELP THEM UNDERSTAND WITH SIMPLE WORDS, TO MAKE THEM GET INVOLVED AND ENJOY THESE WONDERFUL MACHINES. BECAUSE AS I SAID FIRST: YOU CAN NOT TEACH A KIT ALGEBRA, IF HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO MULTIPLY FIRST. REGARDS.

HI, LET ME TELL YOU THAT FIRST, I LEARNED HOW TO FLY REMOTE SMALL CONTROL AIRPLANES THAT MADE ME UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPEN WHEN THE AIRCRAFT FLY AND HOW WIND DO AFFECT THEM. AFTER THAT I LEARNED HOW TO FLY REAL PLANES IN A CESSNA 182. DID NOT ENJOY IT TOO MUCH BECAUSE I DID NOT WANTED TO FLY FROM ONE CITY TO ANOTHER. I JUST WANTED TO ENJOY THE VIEW FLYING LOW AND NOT SO FAST. AND BESIDE, BEING INSIDE OF A CABIN YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO LOOK WELL AROUND YOU. SO I DECIDED TO BUY A SMALL EXPERIMENTAL AND CHOOSED THE CHALLENGER II. NICE BUT EVERY TIME I WAS FLYING I COULD UNDERST THAT IN CASE OF AN ENGINE FAILURE (TWO STROKES ROTAX), LANDING WOULD MAKE ME NEED AND LOOK FOR A LARGE FREE SPACE TO BRING IT TO A FULL STOP. THEN, ONE DAY ON KZbin I SAW A GYRO LANDING IN JUST TEN FEET AND SOME OTHERS EVEN VERTICALLY. FLY IS QUITE A NICE EXPERIENCE AND A WONDEFUL FEELING, BUT TO LAND IN AN EMERGENCY IS SOMETHING TO THINK SERIOUSLY ABOUT. SO I BOUGHT A GYRO NAMED THE COMMANDER, A SIDE BY SIDE THAT COULD FLY QUITE WELL BUT WITH A 2 STROKE ENGINE. I SOLD IT AND FORGOT ABOUT FLYING, UNTIL ONE DAY LOOKING AROUND ON THE INTERNET, SAW A NICE GERMAN MTO. WHAT A DIFFERENCE...STRONG AND WELL MADE AND DESIGNED, MODERN SHAPE AND WITH A FOUR STROKE ROTAX. BOUGHT IT AND ASKED FOR TRAINNING. THAT IS THE ONE I HAVE UNTIL TODAY. JUST LOVE IT. NOW, IF YOU LIVE IN A PLACE WHERE THE WEATHER IS HOT THE MTO IS THE ONE TO LOOK FOR. BUT IF YOUR WEATHER IS COLD, THEN YOU NEED THE ENCLOSED ONE LIKE THE CALIDUS IN TANDEM OR THE SIDE BY SIDE CAVALON. REGARDING UNLOAD THE BLADES IT TAKES SOME TIME BECAUSE THEY CONCENTRATE A LOT OF ENERGY. WHEN YOU LAND, YOU JUST PULL THE STICK ALL THE WAY BACK AND THAT WILL MAKE YOU STOP ALMOST INMEDIATELY. THE ROTOR BLADES ARE LIKE A HUGE FAN THAT WILL PUSH THE AIR FORWARD. IT TURNS INTO A BIG AIR BRAKE. BUT ANYHOW BLADES KEEP TURNING. THEN YOU HAVE IN THE GYRO A PNEUMATIC BRAKE INSTALLED IN THE DISK OF THE MAIN ROTOR HEAD THAT IF YOU SWITCH IT, IT WILL HELP TO SLOW THEM FASTER. IT LETS YOU CHOOSE HOW HARD YOU WANT TO PRESS THE DISK. WHEN I AM NOT IN A RUSH, I JUST DON´T USE IT AND TAXI AROUND, LETTING THEM STOP BY THEM SELVES. SOMETHING IMPORTANT IS TO UNDERSTAND THAT ONCE YOU HAVE LANDED AND PUSHED THE STICK ALL THE WAY BACK TO MAKE THE GYRO NOT TO ROLL IN GROUND OR WATER, YOU MUST PUSH IT BACK FORWARD, BECAUSE ONCE THE BLADES BEGIN TO TURN SLOWER, THEY BEND DOWNWARDS AND WILL HIT THE TAIL OF THE GYRO. THE TIME FOR THE BLADES TO STOP NOT USING THE BRAKE IS ABOUT THREE MINUTES AND WITH THE BRAKE ABOUT ONE. REGARDS.

Neminem Laedit: This is not an airplane. In a gyro the energy in the rotor blades will give the aircraft at that low altitud, the option of landing. And listen to this: when I touch the water, if I pull the stick all the way back, the force and energy kept in the rotary blades which is the aircraft’s round wing, will make it stop in 20 feet. And after stoped even go backwards. This is not an airplane, it’s a gyro. At that altitud to fly safe, if you fly downwind then you have to fly fast. Buy if you fly facing the wind, then you fly it at normal speed and if you turn off the engine, you just push the nose down and land normally. It looks like that you think like an airplane pilot and this is a gyro. Look: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKW7ooqYa5iImrM YOU CAN NOT DO THIS WITH AN AIRPLANE OF COURSE. And look at this other video and tell me if you can do this with a fix wing and if these guys are flying at a deadman’s curve: kzbin.info/www/bejne/omjUeoqfiqyZnLs With all my respect: Try a gyro with a good profesional instructor, and once you can fly it and understand what a gyro is, then you’ll be in the position of giving a good and right opinion. And finally...I had two very good gyro instructors: Michael Burton who trained me on wheels and Peter Wicander who trained me on wheels and with floats. Look in the internet for their names and experience. LOOK HERE: www.auto-gyro.com/en/news/AutoGyro-goes-Philippines_398.html REGARDS.

Felix Malpica - In the UK, we have something called the "500 foot rule" which states that you must not fly within 500ft of any vehicle, vessel, person, or structure (unless landing or taking off). You can fly as low as you like over land or water as long as you don't come within 500ft of anything man-made (think of it like a bubble with a 500ft radius). Some of the things you were doing in this video would certainly be against the regulations in the UK. ... and whilst we are allowed to fly over congested areas, we must still be within range of somewhere safe to land in the event of an engine failure. (I have an MTO Sport, too. I love it)
