Sadly when Eisenhower spoke of the American military industrial complex he was aware that America was funding the French effort who were well aware that Vietnam was a losing proposition. The Vietnam War was never about anything but managing the economy by sending our 19 year old men to use weapons created by a bunch of people who were connected to Washington D.C. A very sad episode in American history. Kerry was right about how the men coming home weren't the same that went over there.

The connection between the vast profits made by Wall Street investors in the military industrial complex (as President Eisenhower called it) can't be ignored. Our elected officials are so dependent on money given to them by corporate lobbyists, it is most probable that Wall Street, and the war industries have undue influence over political, and foreign affairs policy makers (our elected officials). This influence today is far worse than it was during the Vietnam War. Wall Street's mantra, "War is good for business" dominates the "business" of our Republic, turning it into what it is today, a banana republic whose main business is warmongering. Marine Major General Smedley Butler warned us about the unholy alliance of business, and war in his book, "War is a Racket", and General/President Eisenhower reminded us of the misplaced power of the war business in America.

We were not bombing North Vietnam; Hanoi was where the SAM missiles and other armaments were stored. Neither were we bombing or mining Haiphong Harbor, where Soviet munitions were delivered. It was under the leadership of Richard Nixon that the bombing of those two targets forced the communist North Vietnamese to the bargaining table in Paris.

If a soldier is given an order that violates the Constitution, or the uniform code of military justice they are obligated to follow the code, not the errant, aberrant orders of individuals willing to break that code for example Oliver North blindly followed orders breaking the code of military justice. Even in the military, you are not just a robot.
