This 1981 MTV promo was before MTV started airing some reality shows and the music was taken off the air. This was also before Mike Judge's hit adult animated comedy Beavis and Butt-Head premiered on MTV starting in March 1993, when MTV aired the show's first seven seasons, and the show was briefly revived in 2011 for a eighth season. MTV is turning 42 on Tuesday, August 1st!! That's also the same day that MTV first launched!!!! I'll just have to keep watching MTV commercials from the 80s even more!! This is starting to get FANTASTIC and AWESOME!!!! WOO-HOO!!! I really hope MTV keeps running and I'm so glad this channel never gets shut down!!! 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀👏👏👏👏👏

mtv is useless now. They might as well just take the channel away. Is anyone still watching the channel?? I don't think even teenagers are watching anymore! I have fond memories of it from the 90s but its heydey is def over.

Yup...MTV started going from the 90's onwards. The 80's was the best decade...the channel was a hit. I first started watching this channel from the beginning when my dad bought a huge satellite cband mesh dish to watch all those premium movie channels and adult channels..those were the good days. Fond memories

I remember MTV was channel 14 on Storer Cable in our area. I think it pretty much stayed there after the TCI took over in the mid 90s. Then on Warner Cable I think it moved to 25 in the late 90s.

This was before the reality shows began to take over and MTV had to push all the music out the door. MTV sure did launch on August 1, 1981.

lol was so fucking boring and annoying: no internet, no cellphones, all school work was in writing and had to research in the library , no gps, have to use maps and ask for directions to trolls giving wrong directions. I watched a lot of MTV to have some joy.

Read "I Want My MTV" by Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum. It's a great look at the rise and fall of MTV. It'll explain exactly what went wrong by the people who made it, watched it, and saw it happen.

I second this!! It's probably one of the best books about the evolution of music videos and how MTV came to be, as well as how it changed over time. I originally borrowed it from my local library but bought a copy online because it was that interesting.

I really hope MTV turns 42 on Tuesday, August 1st, 2023. MTV has been on the air 41 years ago since the network first launched with its first music video, Video Killed The Video Star by famous band The Buggles on August 1st, 1981. MTV may be one of the longest-running TV networks in American history.

The computer graphics were “cool” back then. I used to make all kinds of graphics on our Apple IIe computers in computer math class. I opened the tutorial books that came with them and started entering code. I’d change number values here n there to see what would come up. My teacher saw me doing stuff on it but none of the course work. He didn’t have a clue so he just gave me a “C” that semester!🤣

I'll do you one better: in 1975 I remember my neighbor getting it when our street first got it. It was a box with a round dial, with something like 10, or so numbers, and letters from A through about L or M.
