Absolutely love this!!! There's a few people on KZbin trying to modernize aikido some terribly but this is how it's done. Loving the training here. Would love to see some resistance sparring from you guys with the gloves out

Great video. Hopefully more people get to see this. I personally think this is a great way see Aikido and any martial as a whole with open eyes.

The clinch technique is off - elbows should be driven into the collarbone and hands not linked around the neck but at the top of the head pulling down. The clincher should put tension through the elbows to pull them together. Controlling the head in this way makes sutemi waza more tricky. That said, most people who would casually throw in this kind of technique are more likely to employ the lazy clinch so it has value.

I think it is great that you are updating aikido to fit into today's world. My only suggestion is to have your attacker wear a T-shirt. Other than that, great video, keep up the good work.

I've been training mma for 3 months ( kickboxing, jujitsu, submission wrestling, and muay thai kickboxing) when I go today and spar I'm going to try this on my partner. I feel like it's bullshit ,but don't knock something till you try it. I wish everyone a blessed life because you only get one.

This video does a nice job introducing the idea of using an armspin to counter the standard Thai-clinch, or even a double-collar tie, but one would need to study the instructional course titled, "Everything About Armspins" to see the complete teaching which emphasizes the critical points required to make the Yoko-sutemi-waza (which is Yoko-wakare) consistently functional. That being said, hey, you have to start somewhere! Great job!

NIKandSi , so pleased you think this sensei who has studied our art for thirty more years than your lifespan is “off to a good start.” There is a right way and a wrong way to self promote. Choose the right way next time to keep respectful relationships in the MA community. The Aikido vocabulary is more than sufficient on its own. Now, get yourselves “off to a good start”and practice instead of messing around on social media.

This is good and can be effective, but the Muay Thai clinch is a bit different than what's shown here. You want to practice it effectively in sparring so you know how to do this when faced with an experienced fighter. When you clinch you want the control point to be at the top of the head and not the bottom of the neck. Otherwise the person could posture up. And you want to scissor your forearms across the sides of his neck and squeeze your elbows together making a vice grip. It's very tight position to be in. And put focus on x blocking the knees. Other than that, really good video. This is a good application of the technique and it's great to see people actually using a bit of force in randori rather than just running at people with their hand stuck out like a lever.

Once Uke was on the ground . He was turning to help you apply the technique. He should be resisting more and allowing you to demonstrate how to handle him. Just an observation.

When the uke's arm is in that position, he's effectively in a shoulder lock; resisting at that point will just result in an injured shoulder, assuming nage doesn't let go.

MUAY THAI CLINCH IS ALWAYS WITH CONSTANT KNEES ATTACK OTHERWISE IT DOESN'T HAVE FULL EFFECT. SO THE SITUATION IN THIS VIDEOS IS JUST HALF OF THE PROBLEM. IF YOU APPLY THIS TECHNIQUE WHEN CLINCHED BY A MUAY THA I, YOU WITH GET HIS KNEES RIGHT IN THE FACE. DON'T DREAM TO DO THIS TO YOURSELF.

Like what y’all are trying to do with modernizing some of the attacks and responses. However , the hand positions and movement in this clinch are really bad . A good Muay Thai guy would clinch a lot different than that. Keep going with this but get better feeders . Get some actual Muay Thai guys to come in and play with it.

The only time the elbow strike felt ok was when my partners head/posture was upright not down like that. I can elbow the back of the head with a downward elbow but not the inside swing that's directed to the jaw. How is it done? thanks

Poorly applied the grip on the head and neck, with that holding technique that is done in Muay Thai and BJJ, this man would hurt his neck and in the projection would break his cervicals. I recommend you not to do it or try it. This Sensei has no experience in real fights, so just suppose, a real fighter, will block his neck and when he tries his projection, due to the position of his body and that of his opponent he will easily fracture! I recommend you be cautious and be careful!

While in the clinch? Kneeing and elbowing at the same time? If you don't block the knees, your body takes them, or your face is destroyed. If you manage to pull off the technique shown, it's done quickly and avoids the knees. Do you suggest taking the knees in the face, instead?

Hahaha! That is not even close to a Muay Thai clinch. Aikido is so funny! How can a black belt, event in Aikido, be so ignorant? I understand the people on YT watching and be amazed, by you, as a blackbelt, don't you fell shame for teaching something so far away from reality? Probably not. Next time, invite a real Muay Thai practitioner and ask him to perform the clinch. Film that and put it on KZbin.
