Swiss F-5s are some of the coolest F-5s out there. I have a scale model of J-3044 featured in this video! The F-18 is also a cool sight in Swiss colors.

These are not F-5. These are F-20 Tiger Sharks.

@@Curtisluu1 only 3 F-20 prototypes were ever built, with 2 being destroyed in crashes. The only one left is on display in the california sience center. These are upgraded F-5E-3 Tiger IIs, which are equipped with the Improved Handling Qualities Package. This changes the LERX from the W4 to the W6, replaces the original pointed nose with a rounded "shark" nose, and adds an automatic flap system.

Its interesting. The F18 was a upgraded model of the F5 you can see the similarities from the rear. Its bigger but the shape an design is similar.

Basically, F-18 is derived from F-5. YF-17, the prototype of F-18 was designed and developed by Northrop which had produced F-5.

@@Curtisluu1 no these are F5s. The F20 never made it to production, only prototypes were made. The F5 has the twin engine while the F20 had a single engine like an F16, that’s the easiest way to tell them apart 👍🏻

The problem with that is the F-5 platform is very much a product of its time. It wasn't really meant to be used in the long term (exceeding 30-40 years in service). They're simple lightweight fighters. Other countries have had to make major modifications to the design, to keep them useable into the 21st century.

Interesting that the Hornets took off in dry thrust only. I guess they try to keep the noise down, and with the light load out it's no problem to get the off the ground in only dry thrust. You're going to need an awfully long strip of tarmac to get the F-5 off the ground in dry thrust haha.

I spent 4 years in a Marine Corps Hornet squadron and an additional 20 years supporting them. I never once observed a a non augmented takeoff.

@@KD10Conqueror I grew up in northern Alberta, Canada about 90 miles from Cold Lake Air Base. That’s 1 of 2 fighter training bases in Canada. Watching our C-F5 Freedom Fighters at air shows was awesome. Even sat in one on a grade 4 field trip! Still one of the “fastest looking while sitting still” jets ever.

Now if Northrop would put them back into production with modern tech they would be a aircraft to be reckoned with. in the role of a light tactical fighter that countries with a budget would again line up to buy.

The US is already doing that with the F-16. No obe wants a second-rate export fighter anymore, everyone wants F-15s, F-16s, Gripens, F-35s, Mirage 2000s, or Hornets. We've moved past the need for dedicated export fighters.
