This is just a quick walk around 12 bikes that I took to The One Show on Tuesday 13/3/18. These are MK1's & Sprints. With a good variety of specs and colours. Feel free to comment, thx guys.

I had 2 older sisters,and we were a bit poverty stricken,so I always got their hand me down bikes,which were used when they got them,so when I became the new owner they were pretty wrecked. One day while riding my very girly bike in the park down our road,to the amusement of the local hard lads. I saw for the very first time one of these wonderful looking Chopper bikes. It was love at first sight,and the kid that owned it,was a school mate of one of my sisters,he was 3 years older than me,but actually let me have a ride on it. I have never forgotten the excitement of riding it,and that was in the summer of 76. I pleaded with my parents to get me one for Christmas and birthday combined,and that i would do all the chores they needed. Christmas came and went,and sadly no Chopper for me that year,nor on my birthday in January. So at the age of 9,I decided that I needed to be extra good,and I started to really make an effort to get in my parents good books. I was forever getting into trouble,I never came home on time,I would be fighting almost every day,and was getting a bit of a reputation as being a little bit wild. I was grounded regularly,but quickly learned to shimmy down the drainpipe just outside the bathroom window. My weekly allowance of 20 pence was constantly under threat of being stopped. I volunteered to peel the potatoes for my mum,and quickly became lighting fast at doing it. I am not going to lie and make out I became an angel,its hard to change your nature,but I did try,and I think that is why on Christmas day 1977 I received the best present in my entire life to this day. It was a purple Raleigh Chopper Mk 2. I rode that beast to death,and over the next 5 years we were inseparable except for the odd occasion it threw me off. I was hospitalised twice,and was seriously concussed both times.I never went anywhere without it. Very happy times indeed. I never realised that there were so many models. I love your collection. I have never stopped riding bikes BTW and commute to work everyday on a road bike,which is quite rare for a builder.

I had a 1970 Orange one for my 7th birthday but always wanted a Yellow one for some reason.

I learned a lot. I own 4 but had to repaint 3 of them because the previous owners had over sprayed them in none original colours. The oldest is a Jan 1970 upturned cleat in Golden Yellow. I got an Horizon Blue Crossover for my 11th birthday in 1972. I was the only one with a square top Sissy Bar. The handlebars were standard Mk1. It cost ￡35 from the Co op!

Golden yellow mk1's are fantastic. In 72 they were using up the mk1 frames fitting them with mk2 parts until the stocks were drained and they could continue with mk2 frames. I think the mk1 looks really nice with a square top sissy.

I had a Raleigh Chopper back in 1972 it was Burgandy Red Had it for about a week when it got stolen off our front porch. Never saw it again I would love to get another one just like it some day This was in Florida

My grandmother shipped a purple 3 speed T shifter, reverse peddle rearbreak, to Melbourne Australia, for me in 1972 . It was bought in the east end of London a large Warehouse , houndsditch warehouse I think. I rode it everywhere, woreout and replaced all the bearings, but even with hard use, I cleaned and polished everyday, so it always looked like new.

Had a 1968 Mk1 10 speed in Singapore, was bought for my Christmas as we had moved there in Oct 68, was red in colour with a cable running through the frame and also a high padded back or head rest that kept slipping down every time we tried to jump monsoon drains. It had red lines going around the tyres which looked great. Mum told me it was one of the first sold in Singapore. Loved that bike and was heart broken when we had to leave it behind. Still have some pictures some where must find them

Had an orange 3spd. one somewhere in the 80's and loved it. Also had a 16'-rearwheel chopperbike, as far as i remember it wasn't a Raleigh tho. I also had the blue X with the 3spd Sturmey-hub somewhere in the 80's. Abt. 15 yrs ago i had 2 Mk3's as well, and i can't remember where they ended up sadly... If i get the change i'll buy myself another Mk3👍🏽🤗

I still have my 1969 eaton glider fastback 100....yes it was a difficult one to pedal ...i remember thinking that when i just got it....but that evaporated once i got used to it and started to fall in love with it. Thanks Paul, Always liked the Bronco. Mk3's are good in the respect that they are light, if you changed it to look like a mk2 then even better. Really that's how Raleigh should have built them but health and safety got in the way of that.

Love your collection brother and your knowledge of the bikes shows there in good hands for a longtime to come, your dads original is awesome, I wouldn't do a single thing to that bike, as it stands right now it's a two wheeled photo album every scratch and mark will have a time and place, restoring it will only make it like all the other hundreds of resto's out there, as it is the bike has a lot of stories to tell. 👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧

I had a MkII new circa 75 in New Zealand... eventually I converted it to Pantha mags front & rear (Made the forks fit at 10yo)... Unfortunately I learned about triangulation and how a square rear frame was weak on jumps. In its original form it was great 'no hands' and wheelies were so easy but due to geometry, you just sat with the wheel about 1 ft off the ground. The pedals were only held on with c-clips and would pop off taking your shoe's instep and a bit of flesh with it.

You're right, only in the export market though. In the UK it was just the basic tyres, over in the states, Canada etc. They had the herringbone slicks with red line.

Raleigh Ireland 1967 New machiney had been installed, These machines had the capibility to increase production by 300%, new electro static paint guns were also installed… But as with the times, because Union Jack symbols were etched into these machines some workers refused to opperate them. As a result the plant became expensive to run and eventually closed permanently in 1980, All 540 staff lost their jobs. The Raleigh Plant in Nottingham was at that time so efficient that 1 weeks output would sustain the Irish market for a whole year. The Raleigh plant in Nottingham went into decine in the late 1990’s as it became more cost effective to produce Bicycles in Asia and India. By 2002 it was little more than a sales and marketing HQ. The factory closed in 2005 and was later demolished. Little of this historic factory remains. Today the Raleigh brand is still fondly remembered, but all of the production takes place in China, Vietnam and India.

Back in 72-3 i had a Raleigh Chipper when i out grew it i was given a red mk1 had that for years and years till it was pinched outside a shop i was devastated been meaning to get a project but i have 3 moultons 1 nearly finished and 2 that need everything restored but i will get one great video

One of my friends sadly passed away just before Christmas, he`s left me & another friend his collection of 6 restored Choppers, & parts, including 2 frames. We are going to keep one each & sell the rest (I`ll be keeping a black Mk2 Prizzy, as that's what I had as a kid!), as we just don't have the room to keep them. I`ve got no idea how to value them though, the prices seem to vary wildly.

@@Mudbrothers Thanks, it was unexpected, so is a shock. Thanks for your offer of help too. I remember him talking about them, but I don't really remember what he said now sadly. I know one of the Mk1`s in an "over-cleat", I remember him talking about high & low rise frames, I know at least one is a 5 speed, & there is a chrome framed Mk2 that doesn't seem to be a Jubilee model, but that's it. I might be digging them out today, so I`ll try to get pics.

@@MrPabsUk If the mk1 is a over cleat or utc as we call them it would have been made from around jan 1970 - middle of 1970. So its a fairly early and probably quite desirable depending on condition. 5 speeds are always worth good money whether its a mk1 or mk2. The chrome bike, well they never made a chrome mk2 so as such only good to someone who really wants a bit of bling. Not for a purist. Still a cool bike to have but wouldn't be worth much to a collector. The jubilee is sprayed silver and would be worth good money too. Shame it isn't one of them.

@@Mudbrothers The chrome one looked very "right" & felt like it was aged correctly for what would have been its period, I guess it would have been done a long time ago! Of the 6, I took 3, the Mk1 tall frame, the MK1 5 speed & the Mk2 Prizzy.. The tall frame is in very nice condition, I`m not sure how original it is, I know its got the "wrong" colour graphics on it, but the rest of it looks right to me! The 5 speed was originally lime green, its now black. It needed a repair to the rear brake mounting as it was cracking away from the tubes (I`ve been restoring cars for 30 odd years, so welding it back was easy enough, & the previously missing brake stays have now been fitted, so that shouldn't happen again). It also had chrome graphics & a white seat strap when I got it, they`ve now been changed to the correct (with black) orange. The Mk2 Prizzy which I`m keeping needs a repair to the seat "cleat", as the welds have parted company with both top tubes, I`ve not got round to that yet, theres no hurry as I`ll be keeping it. I also have another prizzy frame, but one of the top tubes has parted company with the front handlebar post, so another repair in order! I may do a custom build with that later, maybe a direct replica of the one I had as a kid (which got more & more custom as I owned it!). I want to sell the tall frame & 5 speed Mk1`s, I reckon £4k the pair is about right?

My local Halfords had a couple of Choppers in silver with black (I think) writing/pin striping to celebrate the Queens Silver Jubilee. I also think it might have had posh alloy wheels but not sure. It was a cracking looking bike.

There was also a chrome Mk1. There was one for sale in my local bike shop in 1971 for ￡38 and it had an orange seat strap which looked odd. The lettering was black.

Do you remember where this bike shop was? My father always said he saw a chrome one in 1970, I didn't believe it at first but I have since found a original chrome mk1 and other stories stating similar things relating to it. Perhaps there was more than one made.

@@Mudbrothers Yes, it was Jack Carter & Son in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. It is now a Tattoo Parlour. My friends also remember it. We used to go and drool over it. I wish we had phone camera's back then! I never saw anyone local riding round on it locally. Even thought it looked great we even knew then that with the British weather it would be difficult to keep it rust free!

At Jack Carters the standard Mk1 was £36 and to save money they went to the local Co-op and paid £35! Mine was the first cross-over I ever saw. I only remember seeing one other cross-over around that time.

The Chopper you show at the 4:12 mark is the closest one to the one I owned. Mine was a lighter green and had a round shift knob. BUT the king of Choppers to me was an all black 5 speed with red lettering and a high back seat rest.

Hello, the one in the video is called flamboyant green, they also did a apple green from 71 for a short while. Lovely colour. Through 69 the shifter looked like the one in video as a T bar, then in 70 changed to a round knob like what you had. Then from early to mid 72 Raleigh brought out the mk2 chopper and changed back to the T bar shifter. Do you have any pics of your old bike?

Mine was like an apple green. Must have been 69 or 70 because we (my parents) bought our home in 1970 and I had the bike before we moved there. I remember some kids telling me my chopper sucked because it had the peddle brake and one hand brake for the front wheel. At 9 years old I didn't know sucked meant a negative and foot brakes was the only thing I knew up until that point. I don't have any pics with me, but I think one or two may be at my mom's (me mum's for you) house in one of those double snap hard cases. I can't remember what they're called. I really wish a company reintroduced the choppers to the market with some reasonably larger. Comfortable beyond compare to other bikes. Smooth like riding on a cloud. Easy transition shifting. They truly were the best bikes ever. Sorry for the rant. A question if I may, is it pronounced Rally or Rawly?

If you look closely at that green bike again and compare it to the yellow one next to it. You will notice the frame on the green bike is taller in the head tube than the yellow. Both are mk1's. This means the green one is a 69. The yellow happens to be a 70. If you find any pictures take a look at that part, it will help dating it. The green bike is also the same as you describe, pedal backwards for the back brake and it has 1x lever on the bars to operate the front brake. Called a TCW (Tri Coaster Wide). I plan on building some adult size choppers soon so keep an eye out. With regards to name, its pronounced Rally but obviously spelt Raleigh.

I never knew there were so many variants. As a kid I had a purple Mk2 and later was also gifted an orange Mk1 but neither survive sadly. What was the black one with prismatic decals called? Was that a sprint too? I seem to remember it being one of the last to appear back in the day.

The black one was called the Prismatic, I've seen some as late as 82 on the hub. They were some of the last ones made, you're correct. The Sprints were earlier and had their own frame design different to the rest of the choppers. They were out in 72/73.

There were plenty more of those purple choppers made than just 3- I saw at least 2 on the road in Australia back in the mid 70's. I had one of those tcw jobs that my mum bought fairly cheaply second hand in NZ in 75 ($30 NZ IN 75) and then she shipped it to AUS for me as I was into Evil Knievel and hanna barberra cartoons where cats rode chopper motorcycles. It was a good bike but sourcing parts for the sturmey archer gears in Australia in 77 was quite hard then.

The purple chopper is a sprint so its a different frame size to normal. The regular purple mk2, yes they made thousands of them. A lot of frames were shipped to Aus, then parts from Taiwan, Japan etc were used to assemble them. The Aus bikes are pretty smart as most are slightly different to each other. Malvern Star, Speedwell all made the chopper bikes under license in Aus. Sounded good times back then!

I knew a guy who worked at the Raleigh factory in the late 80s/early 90s. He was part of a group who basically destroyed hundreds of them, along with Tomahawks, Chippers, Budgies, Grifters, Strikers and Boxers. No one was buying them so they just destroyed the lot.

I just found a MK1 ten speed (orange). needs a front wheel and chain guard. Hard to find parts here in the states. Any ideas as to where to find replacement parts. Not a lot of ebay UK people want to ship to states?

Sounds a great find. As luck would have it the 10 speed was the only chopper than didn't have a chainguard. Front wheel, you just need to look for a dimpled one. They do come up quite often. If I find one i'll send you the link. Any pics of your find?

That's why I enjoy riding Iverson dragstrippers and TT dragsters as they are bigger and feel comfortable to ride. We have some frames in the pipeline that are scaled up copies of the original MK1. Some new videos will be coming soon

Hi great collection,thing is I got a mk3 chopper,but it looks tiny I was thinking about putting maybe a bigger wheel on back either 24 or a 26 inch and maybe a 20 on front as I want to ebike it,have you tried this with any of yours of if not have you any advice on how to make it bit bigger?thank you

I did have a 5 speed a while ago with a 20" front wheel. I'm currently building a 24" rear with a 20" front, you could do the same, but you would need to modify the frame. An E bike conversion would be simple enough if you kept the same wheel size, its big enough for an adult as standard just you wouldn't want to go too fast with the standard 16" front wheel. If cost is an issue just fit a motor to the front standard wheel, however if budget allows then cut the frame up and build a larger version with larger wheels.

The last one I did used grifter front forks so a 20” front could be fitted but that was on a mk2. 26” rear will need the frame modifying. Can be done easily just depends on your budget

One bike that I’ve had on the back burner for a while is using a cycle master back wheel/engine. It’s only 25cc in size but it allows a larger wheel to be used and the engine is neat inside the rear wheel. If your using big wheels then a motor in the rear wheel will be straightforward

Thx pal, Mike Hughes was selling the best repro ones but I believe he only sells them through Martyn Green Cycles in London now. Apart from those I can't really recommend anyone else, as you say most are not correct.

Sorry buddy for asking the questions but you're the man to go to Anyway I'm wondering do you have any mk2 front wheels because the bearings are fucked or how to fix them plz

If its just the bearings easiest thing to do is change them. Just make sure you put the axle back in the correct way round. Otherwise the bearings will tighten and you could go over the bars. I'll do a vid of that soon too. Use the same grease as you would on the bottom bracket. I guarantee if you get another wheel, the bearings will be knackered anyway. Or badly adjusted.

If you look at where the back wheel bolts on, there is a series of numbers stamped in the frame. Let me know the numbers and I'll tell you what date it is

@@davidnetherway4734 If it's the same Carmine red it's a very desirable colour. If the paint is in good condition, it would be best to leave original paint. Obviously if the sun has roached it then you can't do much other than re paint.
