Hi, just popped over after Danny's chat tonight. I just set up my first tower wormery (preloved wormcity) so will definitely be watching more of your videos for more tips and advice. Happy 2024 and all the best, Jane

It all seems very over complicated to me Nigel. I had a similar wormery 2 years ago but it was too much work to manage the conditions given it’s small size. I now just use a standard darlek compost bin for my food scraps and ripped up amazon packaging. It’s always heaving with worms and I just shovel the resulting worm casts out of the bottom once a year. I never think about it from one year to the next, just fill and shovel. I understand I’m not getting the tea, but it seems to me I could get that by adding a few handfuls of the castings to a bucket, leaving and straining. Am I missing something. Very nice review though: all the best - Steve

Hello Steve, the main object of this model is although this will not produce a huge bulk of compost, but it that it can be located indoors or near to the house for convenience. I used Dalek bins my first year on the plot and found that they encouraged rats 😱. I considered fitting a mesh base but it was too much of a pain, so I quickly donated my 3 to other plot holders 😉. The yellow wheelie bins (240 ltr) that I now use for wormeries on the plot are vermin proof. The down side is they need to be tipped over to empty, but the plus side, you can wheel them to the required location first. Cheers...Nigel😀

MuddyBootz that’s a great idea, I’ve definitely noticed a few rat holes in a few of my compost bins over the years. We do have rat traps all over our site, but it’s a battle we will never win. I’ve never had rats in my Darlek bins, only my big hot composting area

HI Steven, although this will not produce a huge bulk of compost, the main feature is that it can be located indoors or near to the house 👍. My main wormeries are converted wheelie bins on the plot. More people should join us in keeping worms 👍

Handy to keep by the back door mate 👍.....at the moment. I tend to let the kitchen waste build up and wait for a week to feed the big bins. at least now I won't have to store it for so long.😀

Hi mate, great product review. Looks like you have a healthy colony of worms to start with. Looks like a decent system. Will be interesting to see how they produce worm compost for you. Take care. Nick

Hi Nick, I was surprised at the bulk of worms supplied in the kit. This will help me a lot since I store my kitchen scraps on the plot to feed the large bins once a week. Now I can offload some of that into the urbalive 👍

Be good to see how you get on with it Nigel. I use one from VidaXl - very very very similar in all but the shape, size and most importantly maybe, price. Had it a few years and it has produced buckets full of vermicompost. Steve

You lucky man you :-) looks good Nigel. I got a freebie last year from Freecycle of similar design and as soon as I have the cash I'll be getting a supply of worms delivered to get cracking so i can have my own worm casts for my compost :-)

Hi Phil, do any of you neighbours have wormeries? If so, I am sure that they would donate a few worms to get you started....it is amazing how quickly that they multiply 👍. Hope you get set up soon 😀
@philwhiteley47046 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel- sadly not - they're allquite old school and they are not bithered for stuff like wormeries etc. I think they have done things the same way for so long they stick with that. So I'll get some ordered when I can afford and get my own compost going too as I learn loads of channels like yours and a few others
@tracyvernon24266 жыл бұрын
Well that was really interesting.Iv'e seen quite a few people taking theses wormerie's on,be good to see how things are progressing with it later on mate.

I have been "farming" worms now for a number of years. They procreate at an alarming rate, look like a huge plate of spaghetti and escape in hundreds. My question is, when they go rummaging in the vegetable garden do they eat the growing vegetable roots?
@MuddyBootz6 жыл бұрын
A very good question and something that I have never considered! I would assume that they feed on decaying matter so your plant roots should be fine. Earthworms eat dirt and fungi 😀
