Mudlarks participated in the excavation of the amphitheatre and made some important discoveries.
Prior to the start of construction work on the new Guildhall Art Gallery in 1988, archaeologists were expecting a fairly routine excavation.
However, they made one of the most significant archaeological
finds in London for over a century - the discovery of the Roman Amphitheatre.
Mudlarks played an important role in working alongside the archaeologists, and they made some incredible discoveries.
In this lecture, Andrew Lane (Education and Engagement Officer, Destination City - Heritage, City of London Corporation) and John Dunford (Society of Thames Mudlarks) tell us about the archaeological
excavations and history of the site through a selection of artefacts recovered from the ancient amphitheatre.
