Part of the point is that Scott and Ramona are both toxic. Ramona cheats on and runs away from and mistreats her exes, Scott cheats on his gfs and is a lousy partner and friend and possibly pedo as well as an all round cunt. The other characters are just normal people with regular flaws, but Scott and Ramona are both toxic and deserve each other.

i think my favorite part of the scott pilgrim comic and basically my favorite part in any comic i've read so far has to be the paneling during the first call with Envy. MAN! The brilliant use of small panels to not only emphasize just how claustrophobic Scott feels at that particular moment, but it also breaks the fourth wall and subconsciously influences YOU the reader due to the fact that our eyes subconsciously read small and narrow panels very quickly because they are meant to represent a small moment in time. so the ultimate effect is a reading experience that feels tense and disorienting for all parties involved. bro, that was gold.

Scott Pilgrim has similarly been in my life since I was young. My dad showed me the movie when I was 11 and borrowed the comics from the library for me to read. I read it again at 15 and reread recently in December I believe? Now as an 18 year old. It’s so fascinating how this series has changed for me over time, as my perception of the characters and the world is informed by my own life experience. Rereading it recently, I felt it was the first time I ever felt like I saw my fears around emotional vulnerability outside of myself. It’s an alienating thing to be scared of the world, love, and your own feelings, but Bryan so beautifully humanises his characters that it felt like having a friend right there who understood me. It’s seriously such a special story-and it really reminds us to be kind to ourselves and the people around us as we grow and evolve with our changing selves and world.

37 now, I'll say one thing about surviving my 20s. Two shows, two characters that are the epitome of a 20 something year old f'up. Scott and Mordecai from Regular Show. Those two character couldn't have been anymore perfect for representing 20 something years with no direction in life.
@cultreader975123 күн бұрын
Out of curiosity, did you eventually find direction? I'm also a former directionless 20-something, so I'm not asking for advice, I'm just curious.
@KevinSkye123 күн бұрын
@cultreader9751 Yeah, I did. Had to stop prioritizing what felt good in the moment and started moving moves for the future me to enjoy instead of paying for it. Dr K mentioned something procrastination, that being, doing something the version of you today can do so in your next life/player since he was referencing gaming(can focus on other more important things). Around that time, it was my independence, I put way too much stock into pleasing friends instead of building a foundation for myself.

Scott pilgrim is a tale of a guy who recognises that he was an asshole, came to terms with his shadow self to save the girl of his dreams from her issues by fixing himself ❤ scott is anyone who strives to be better
@zadock637010 ай бұрын
I love how the anime creates a dark reflection of scott. when ramona said that scott is just another evil ex waiting to happen, the anime took that literally. A version of scott pilgrim (future scott) ended up being the most evil and powerful of ramona's exes to the point that he was willing to kill everyone related to scott, and soloed all 7 exes at once and then some. future scott is what would have happened if scott and ramona would never have overcome and acknowledged their flaws. this is why I love that future scott was the villain all along. it shows a possible path of scott and how he could have potentially become worse than every evil ex combined, and it even makes sense.
@mugenbop10 ай бұрын
I think that is one thing that can be missed with the evil scott in the comics if you never read it, the movie brushes upon it and the show lets people know how much Scott like all people can go down the same path and reject the past. Just like how even older scott wants to destroy it or stop it from even happening. :)

Wow, that's deep. I was really exited to see the anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim and how it's different from the movie and comic. Now I'm even more eager to read the last one! Becoming older means your obsession over a silly nerd guy turns to understanding the exs and how he isn't actually the best guy in the world (both as a friend and as a partner). Regardless, he is still relatable, because you struggle with being adult yourself.
@MarvinPowell110 ай бұрын
I agree with everything you said here and I'll add this: Almost every single person I've ever heard call Scott Pilgrim "an asshole" was almost entirely projecting. How can you imply an idiot in their 20s is such an awful person when it's clear that 1) he never meant to do bad things to others and 2) the whole point of his character arc is to grow up and mature. I can't stand the perpetually-online Twitter crowd who like to use Scott Pilgrim as an excuse to project their own insecurities and flaws onto others, cause it shows they fundamentally do not get Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

Scott himself isn't a saint, but neither are the people around him everyone in that series has done questionable things they're not proud of. I also dig Scott and Ramona's character growth in the comics they try to do better instead of regressing. It's very well written and tackles life in a realistic way.

this title really hits home. I feel like specially, even compared to other watchers/readers, i relate to scott on most every detail. his situation with knives i had (minus the terrible age gap though she is a couple years younger), his situation with kim when he was moving i had, and even scotts feelings with ramona and how she influences his lifestyle (especially after leaving him), it all just hits too close to home. i carry the same traits as him, same coping mechanisms, same revisiting of video games, genuinly everything. Hell, his actor looks like a whiter me. that is to say, i think this video in specifically brought something out in my to spark genuine thought and put my own life into perspective. its like- because scott and I are so similar, the video was essentially speaking to me specifically. Im not afraid to say this video is probably going to make me think a whole lot- and probably try to change toxic traits of mine. very cool video, very cool title.

When I first heard about Scott Pilgrim, I thought it was the same as Napoleon Dynamite because it came out around the same time. But now in 2024, I got to watch the anime and I loved it.

The video is nice, but it seems that for some reason you didn't talk about Gideon's use of the 'Glow'. We don't know when Scott got it, but most likely it was very, very early, my personal guess would be the beginning of the first volume. Gideon modified his memories and made him forget many things using it. Just remember how early Patel found out about Scott or how often Gideon was mentioned in the first volume. The 'Glow' didn't make him someone he wasn't before, but it amplified his 'foolishness'. The same goes for Ramona - her need to run was so strong, that she struggled to stay in Toronto, and ultimately left, even though Scott expressed his love for her so sincerely. Then she struggled to come back even that she wanted to. And of course she tried to run because of it in the middle of the final fight. Ramona didn't learn from her past mistakes did or confront Nega Ramona like Scott did. That's why Scott tells her Wallace's words in the elevator, when she feels unsure about restarting their relationship. The League's purpose was to control Ramona's love life and Gideon was doing it the whole time, not just in the final fight. We can't ignore it, because it is a very important part of the story.

I just didn’t include it because I would have had to have this segment in the video and it just didn’t flow well in the script, plus for readers who had never read it and went past spoilers I wanted to keep some of the major last chapter reveals undisclosed. Of course the glow is cool symbolism and important in the story just felt this video did not need that exposition dump
