Looks Ali never left those few years, but then the rust showed up next against Bonavena

Wrong. Ali intentionally fought Bonavena in a different type of style. It's not that he was rusty or slow. You have to understand that Ali was a smart fighter who changed styles based on his opponent. Look at his follow up match with Jimmy Ellis and you'll see he is back to his fast, dancing style. I get so annoyed by ignorant critics trying to judge Ali. You don't know what you're saying.

@Demonizer5134 dude I'm going on what Ali himself said to Cosell after the fight, that the layoff bothered him and missed a lot of punches. He's right though, Ali looked sloppy and sluggish, but the 15th round knockout was so dramatic people forget the previous 14 rounds. Ali lost his next fight against Frazier but overall looked tons better than the Bonavena fight. Then yes, Ellis was his former sparring partner so Ali pretty much duplicated their sparring sessions by his move and box strategy.

I think you are both right. Before the Quarry fight, there were a lot of doubts about if he would have the same speed, cardio...etc. Ali wanted to prove a point so he tried to fight like before. But he realised in this fight and probably even before in sparring that he couldn't last 15 rounds with his dancing style like before. So yes he intentionally fought Bonavena with a different style but it wasn't only to adapt to him. He did had rust and knew he was not the same. He also knew Bonavena had never been stopped even against Frazier twice. So not being a big puncher, he knew the fight would probably last 15 rounds. He had to find a way to pace himself. The Bonavena fight was him trying new ways of fighting to last 15 rounds without dancing, that's why he did some weird stuff he never reproduced again. I also think he was kind of trying stuff against Bonavena to see if it could work in his upcoming Frazier fight, Frazier being a more difficult opponent than Bonavena with great cardio, undefeated so with a big chance to go to the distance. Well that's just my opinion, no need to get angry if you don't agree.

@@youtoo2233 Ali still won the majority of the rounds before the knockout, at least by my scoring. I'm saying that even though he wasn't dancing it doesn't necessarily mean he couldn't dance, which is why I pointed out the Jimmy Ellis fight which proves that he still could. I don't dispute that the layoff bothered him, of course it would have, but I'm saying he was such a smart fighter who not only could adjust to different styles but could also still prove that he could move and dance if he wanted to. Cheers.

Did Jerry really think he would win after barely beating Thad Spencer by late KO and losing to Jimmy Ellis for the WBA crown?

Jerry Quarry was simply no match for the great Muhammad Ali. He never stood a chance.

Wish I could turn the announcers voice off so I don't have to hear him call Ali, Clay.

ALI looked good after 3yrs but Quarry couldn't handle his size, speed, reach very little workout for ALI, Some layoff did show in Bonavenia fight but got good workout I always thought 3rd tune up fight against chuvalo or Patterson and ALI would have been ready and have beaten Frazier in fight of the century
