I was 15 when Ali was allowed to fight again after being stripped of his title and not allowed to fight for 3 years for refusing to go and fight in the Vietnam war. I was an Ali boxing fanatic. And I wept when he lost in his first Frazier fight in March 1971. I was devastated. I was in shock when he lost in the first Norton fight. But there was great joy and celebration when he fought Foreman and through much experience he went through, he won with a knockout and got his title back. There will never be another boxer like Ali!!!!!!

That last uppercut and hook were pure technique. The snap he had on those punches were incredible. Ali didn’t even look like he put any power into them and they still looked like they were gonna take Quarry’s head off. His jabs were insane too. Shit Ali was an amazing fighter…..

Jerry Quarry is one of those fighters who had the misfortune to fight in the wrong era. He was a solid fighter but in the same era as Ali, Foreman, Frazier, etc etc. Great video and thanks for posting but the music was very distracting. Volume should have been lower if not off.

This fight was in 1972. Quarry retired in 1975. Quarry made his first comeback in 1977, and even that early, he was already showing cognitive decline due to "dementia pugilistica". And he was still fairly young. You look at this fight and you know why immediately - Quarry (198 pounds) is more than willing to take 3 or 4 hard shots from Ali (218 pounds) in order to deliver one. Very tough, but not so smart. By 1995, he could no longer feed or dress himself. He died of a heart attack (he was suffering from severe pneumonia at the time) at age 53 in 1997.

Jerry initiated a strategy that was obviously not working and never changed is spite of it. A lot of pressure here but he should have prepared for a counterpunching plan where he was usually very efficient. Ali of course was a very skilled man in the Ring.

Jerry Quarry died of a heart attack in 1999 at age 53. He had serious brain damage for years. He fought many good fights, but he had little defense and was no match for the best fighters. His face (near his eyes) cut and bled far too easily.
