Such a lovely film! They build their ships exactly the same way the Dutch built their ships in the 17th century: Shell first. It makes me wonder did they get it from the Dutch or did the Dutch get it from them? They even use the same tools! Frame first apparently popped up in the Mediterranean around 800 a.d. and then found its way around the Spanish peninsular and up the coast northwards. King Henry VIII hired Venitian shipbuilders so the Brits were already building frame first in the early 16th century (The Mary Rose 1511). The Dutch were still building shell first in Amsterdamin the 1660s but at that they were supreme! Incredible craftmanship! They didn't even work with plans! Even the Vasa (1628) in Stockholm was built shell first, just like these guys here build their ships! Absolutely superb!

According to a book I am reading "A short history of seafaring" Indonesians are the first boat builders known to discover Islands far away from mainland, in pacific. They were much advanced before Europeans building boats according to the book, so if there is a knowledge transfer, I think it was from Indonesian to Dutch.

Like all culture-technological exchanges it went back and forth. I'm sure, the Dutch were influenced by the previous maritime powers of Europe (Portuguese and Spanish). And the Bugis honed their craft in the most active maritime culture in the world at that time, learning from so many different culture. Not only about the technological craftsmanship, but the spirituality aspect, the human aspect, etc.

I wish I could sit there for a whole year with Djafar, as well as with all my short stories, (sometimes it could take 3 to 4 years to exhaust a topic, depending on the project), but I do not have the people and the means (lack of budget and a proper producer). I get bugged when people, especially engineers often say how impossible tasks would be without modern tools or their massive education. And i see ancient techniques prevail all the time. They dont build this boat staring at google all day. They often have plenty of time and a strong will and in my opinion most people are way less educated than 100 years ago.

Those skills are helpful don't get me wrong. They don't however estimate how long this boat should remain at work, not they guarantee a certain weight these boats can handle or if they can even cross the Atlantic for example. Certain tasks needs computer because of the precision, and virtual stimulations. Keep in mind this is a 40ft wooden boat. You can't construct an aircraft carrier or a commercial shipping rig in one spot. Multiple parts has to come from different sources. Precision and planing are to the multimeters in error.

These boats are built to navigate the banda seas and do need constant care since they are made mostly of organic material, but they do last for a good 30 to 40 years.

Pagan worship other creations beside God, if you noticed he is wearing a Songkok a traditional Muslim wear so for sure they are Worshipping One God. However, their actions were taken from their ancestors so there might be good reasons for this(or not) so I'd have to actually ask them directly which I have no access to. Sacrificing an Animal usually means celebration and they share the meat with the community in hoping the boat would be blessed by God while making prayers to Him. Also you can see them reading from the Quran at the later parts. The part where they smear blood, that part is I'm unsure of.
