Islam claims that Allah gave the miraculous revelation of Islam, the “final religion” to an illiterate man. The word used to define Muhammad as an illiterate individual is “ummi.” This word however has two meanings. The older of which precedes Islam and means “someone without a book of God.” This definition was a common nickname for Arabs at the time of Muhammad while Jews and Christians were called “people of the book.” Muhammad could read and write. It could be possible to compare the apostles of Christ as being unlettered men too. Acts 4: 13 makes for interesting reading: "Now seeing the boldness of Peter and of John, and having understood that they are unschooled and ordinary men, they were astonished. And they recognized them, that they had been with Jesus." In my view this is another Christian story that Islamic reciters have changed over time to suite their culture.

My own ancestors were tremendously successful merchants and yet, none knew how to read or write. They were Arab traders and they had their own ways of keeping records. One other reason why Muslims claims that Muhammed was illiterate is to also try and force a prophesy from the Bible into a mould to validate Muhammed as supposedly having being prophesied in the Bible..... "Then the book is delivered to one who is illiterate, saying, “Read this, please.” And he says, “I am not literate.” ( Isaiah 29: 12 )

Further proof that Muhammad was not illiterate: Narrated 'Urwa: The Prophet (ﷺ) wrote the (marriage contract) with `Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (ie till his death). Sahih Bukhari 5158 How does he write the marriage contract if he was illiterate? It doesn't say it was written for him, HE WROTE. 96:1 Iqra biismi rabbika allathee khalaqa Why would a deity ask Muhammad to "IQRA" if the deity knew Muhammad was illiterate? Taking into consideration of the context of the Qur’anic verses, the Arabic word Ummi means illiterate- in a sense that the person doesn’t have any knowledge of the divine Scripture. It is not that he doesn’t know reading and writing, as is popularly believed, the verse below confirms the same: “And there are among them unlettered people (أُمِّيُّونَ) who have no real knowledge of the Scriptures, knowing only their own wishful thinking and following only conjecture.” -( Al-Qur'an 2:78) Let us ponder over some historical facts as below: Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), was hired by Khadija, a wealthy Quraish lady as her business manager. So, one could fairly assume that she must have hired the most qualified person - literate up to the standard - knows reading writing, and to calculate, so that he could run her business smoothly. He developed his business acumen from his frequent business trips abroad with his beloved uncle Abu Talib - mostly to Syria. Abu Talib was educated, and a great poet too. Dewan - E- Abu Talib published from Saudi Arabia is a collection of thousands of his poetry. Abu Talib was rich and a community leader. So it is quite obvious that he must have given his children proper education, and of course to his nephew Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) too, who was raised in his household; educating children makes the community leader more dignified in the society. Ali bin Abu Talib was educated and famous for his outstanding scholarship. First revelation, and the first commandment in the Qur'an is said to be IQRA- meaning read- educate yourself. So, it is not rationale that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) preached others to read, while he himself chose to remain illiterate. Hence meaning of ‘Ummi’ taken as ‘unlettered’ is not a correct choice; correct translation would be the one who is not enlightened with any Scriptural knowledge, which is further confirmed in the verse 2:78, below: “And there are among them UMMIYUNA (أُمِّيُّونَ) who have no real knowledge of the scripture, [following] only wishful beliefs and depending on nothing but conjecture.” -( Al Qur'an 2:78) The word 'ummi' has been used in the Quran in a number of verses. The following verse is one example: "Those who follow the Messenger, the Unlettered (ummi) Prophet, whom they find mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel in their possession. He directs them to righteousness, and deters them from evil, and allows for them all good things, and prohibits for them wickedness, and unloads the burdens and the shackles that are upon them. Those who believe in him, and respect him, and support him, and follow the light that came down with him- these are the successful." -(Al Qur'an 7:157) Many translations of the Qur'an have wrongly translated the word 'ummi' as illiterate. With a quick analysis of various Qur'anic verses where the word 'ummi' is used, it can be verified that this word does not mean illiterate. The correct meaning is gentile or someone who has not received a Scripture. Let us read the following verse: Say to those who were given the Scripture, as well as the 'ummiyoon', "Have you submitted?" -(Al Qur'an 3:20) In this verse, God commanded Muhammad to invite those who received a Scripture (the Jews and Christians) as well as the ummiyoon (plural of ummi) to submit to God. If we use the wrong interpretation used by Muslims interpreters today of the word 'ummi' of the one who cannot read or write, we would have the following translation: "Proclaim to those who received a Scripture as well as those who cannot read or write to submit" It is clear that this is an inaccurate translation for the following reasons: 1- The opposite of 'those who received a Scripture' is 'those who did not receive a Scripture' and not those who cannot read or write! 2- If we assume that the word 'ummi' means illiterate then is God commanding Prophet Muhammad to call to submission those who received a Scripture and only the illiterate among the rest? Once again, this is very irrational and does not make any sense. Also, let us read : "It is He who sent among the unlettered a messenger from themselves; reciting His revelations to them, and purifying them, and teaching them the Scripture and wisdom; although they were in obvious error before that." -(Al Qur'an 62:2) Once again, if we assume that the word 'ummi' means illiterate then that would mean that God has in fact sent Muhammad only to those who cannot read or write! It is quite obvious that God would send a messenger with a Scripture to all who did not receive a Scripture, and not only to those who cannot read and write! Indeed, Prophet Muhammad was sent to those who never received a messenger before him as confirmed in the following words: "Or do they say, "He fabricated it"? Rather, it is the truth from your Lord so that you would warn a people to whom no warner has come before you so that they may be guided." -(Al Qur'an 32:3) Now let us read the following verses where we are given more conclusive evidence that the word 'ummi' does not mean illiterate: "And among them are 'ummiyoon' who do not know the Scripture except through hearsay, they are merely guessing. Therefore, woe to those who write the Scripture with their own hands, then say, "This is from God" in order to purchase a cheap gain. Therefore woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they have gained." -(Al Qur'an 2:78-79) 1- The word 'ummiyoon' is immediately followed by the words 'who do not know the Scripture', which confirms the definition of the word 'ummi' as, and it is exactly as the words say: The one who never received a messenger and thus does not know the Scripture. 2- In verse 79 God warns the 'ummiyoon' not to write distorted versions of the Scripture 'with their own hands'. How can these 'ummiyoon' write distorted versions if they cannot read or write? Once again, this gives us confirmation that 'ummiyoon' does not mean illiterate. It means gentiles who have not received any Scripture. To conclude, the correct meaning of the word 'ummi' in the Quran is a gentile; one who has not received a Scripture. We can also conclude the question you have all been asking. Was our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) unable to read or write, or illiterate in a general sense? Of course not, as we have read and understood from above. Ummi does not indicate that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was illiterate, but that he had no knowledge of the scripture before it had come to him. May Allah guide us in His straight path

When he prayed in the cave of Hira an angel appeared to him, pressed him hard and asked him to read 3 times, but each time Muhammad replied: I do not know how to read. What do you think about this? Has he learned to read later in his life?

Muhammad's family and some caretakers died, and he was bounced between a few relatives. He spent time with I believe migratory tribes in the desert. Then, as an adult, he married a rich women 15 years his senior Khadija. At some point, I'm sure he picked up a variety or snippets of education, but it would likely have been focused on his career, instead of a broad education as we might assume others to have. Lots of speculation on my part here.

The argument here is then the prophet was asking for writing materials to write something for them, so he must have been literate to do this. It is not uncommon to say something like, "the president wrote to so and so" meaning he ordered someone to do so. For example, the prophet wrote messages to kings and the narrations use the term wrote (كتب) but the Prophet certainly appointed writers for this job who wrote them on his behalf. (Tafseer al-Qurtubi, Vol. 13, p. 352) This is supported by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's observation that in the normal course of events, the Prophet (saw) appointed writers to write the revelation, messages to kings and contracts. It would be unusual to say he wanted to write himself in his last death throes. (Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Vol. 7, pp. 504-505) There is no narration saying he actually wrote anything whilst there are many narrations where he would ask others to write for him - this leaves this interpretation as highly doubtful. Furthermore, the Prophet (saw) was extremely ill as Aisha (ra) said: دَخَلَ عَلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ وَهُوَ بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ وَرِجْلاَهُ تَخُطَّانِ بِالأَرْضِ "The Messenger of Allah (saw) entered upon me, (supported) between two men, with his feet making lines along the ground." (Ibn Majah Hadith 1686) In such a state, even if he could write, he would not have been able to write. This would suggest what he meant was 'he would ask someone to write.' The Prophet (saw) wrote part of the Hudaybiyyah Treaty It was narrated regarding the Hudaybiyyah treaty: فَلَمَّا كَتَبُوا الْكِتَابَ كَتَبُوا، هَذَا مَا قَاضَى عَلَيْهِ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ‏.‏ قَالُوا لاَ نُقِرُّ بِهَذَا، لَوْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مَا مَنَعْنَاكَ شَيْئًا، وَلَكِنْ أَنْتَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ أَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، وَأَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ ‏"‏ امْحُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ لاَ وَاللَّهِ لاَ أَمْحُوكَ أَبَدًا‏.‏ فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْكِتَابَ، وَلَيْسَ يُحْسِنُ يَكْتُبُ، فَكَتَبَ هَذَا مَا قَاضَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ "When the agreement was being written, the Muslims wrote: "This is the peace treaty, which Muhammad, Apostle of Allah, has concluded." The infidels said to him, "We do not agree with you on this, for if we knew that you are Apostle of Allah, we would not have prevented you from anything (i.e. entering Mecca, etc.), but you are Muhammad, the son of Abdullah." Then he said to Ali, "Erase Apostle of Allah'." Ali said, "No, by Allah, I will never erase you (i.e. your name)." Then Allah's Messenger (saw) took the writing sheet, and he did not know a better writing, and he wrote the following: 'This is the peace treaty which Muhammad, the son of Abdullah…'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 4251) The argument here is this demonstrates the Prophet (saw) could write. This however does not give the full picture as it ignores other evidences that elaborate this event in further detail. Scholars however argue the term 'wrote' (كتب) that appears in this hadith has to be understood in light of other narrations, as narrations explain one another. They say he ordered Ali to write and others state he did not know the place of the written line. It is narrated in al-Bukhari: فَقَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ ‏"‏ امْحُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ وَاللَّهِ لاَ أَمْحَاهُ أَبَدًا‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَأَرِنِيهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ فَأَرَاهُ إِيَّاهُ، فَمَحَاهُ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِيَدِهِ "He (the Prophet) asked Ali to erase the expression of Apostle of Allah. On that Ali said, 'By Allah, I will never erase it.' Allah's Apostle said (to Ali), 'Let me see the phrase. When Ali showed him the phrase, the Prophet (saw) erased the expression with his own hand." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3184) In the narration of Muslim, it says: فَأَمَرَ عَلِيًّا أَنْ يَمْحَاهَا فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لاَ وَاللَّهِ لاَ أَمْحَاهَا ‏.‏ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ أَرِنِي مَكَانَهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَأَرَاهُ مَكَانَهَا فَمَحَاهَا وَكَتَبَ ‏"‏ ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏"‏ ‏. "He (the Prophet) told Ali to strike out the words. Ali said: No, by Allah, I will not strike them out. The Messenger of Allah (may Peace be upon him) said: Show me their place (on the parchment). So Ali showed him their place and the Prophet struck them out; and Ali wrote: Ibn Abdullah." (Sahih Muslim 1783 c) In the previous two narrations, the prophet could not recognize the written line and asked Ali to show him the words. In light of this narration, scholars argue the sentence in the first hadith, "Then Allah's Messenger (saw) took the writing sheet" refers to the sentence in the other two clarifying narrations: "he (the Prophet) struck them out," then Ali "he wrote" the rest. (al-Qurtubi, Ibn Hajar and Ibn Kathir) Conclusion Both narrations, when reviewed in detail and contextualised, do not suggest the literacy of the Prophet. In fact they show the converse - the prophet's illiteracy.

He(saww) asked for writing material in final illness on thursday as this incident is mainly refered as the clamity of Thursday. And it was Umam Ibn Khattab who raised the voice over this issue and the Prophet(saww) was not given a pen and a paper to write the will. At that point Umar said: Allah(swt)’s book is enough for us. It can be found in Islamic books in many places as much as it has claimed Tawattur and can not be denied to have been existed. And yes even Sahih Bukhari saves the incident in it. Now the Question arises that how was Prophet(saww) supposed to write? He(saww) even if had never been to a teacher knew how to read and write. No one disagrees with the fact that Prophet(saww) wrote letters to the kings and rulers of the neighboring regions. No one at that time asks how was he able to read and write. The best and full explanation can be found in the book ‘The Unschooled Prophet’ By Murtaza Mutahiri. The Prophet(saww) didn’t had any teacher because then His Teacher would had been more respectful to muslims than the prophet(saww) himself, that is why Allah(swt) had not provided a teacher for Prophet(saww) and instead gave him knowledge by revelations.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) did not learn to read or write; neither before or during, the revelation of the Holy Qur’ān. Allāh Azzawajal chose Muhammad (ﷺ) because in his illiteracy, the Prophet (ﷺ) could not boast or take any credit for the eloquence of the Holy Qur’ān. Even the critics of Islām confirm the illiteracy of the Prophet (ﷺ). They state that family or friends of such, wrote the Holy Qur’ān for him, or that he simply memorised stories from the Bible. In addition to this, the illiteracy of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also kept the temptation of peer pressure to alter the words of Qur’ān at bay, so as not to distort the purity of the Message before its compilation. His sole purpose was to speak the words that Allāh Azzawajal inspired him to say, and guide humanity towards a productive, and fulfilling way of life: “The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; (…) I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto me, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.” (Deuteronomy 18:15,18) “(…) The [last] Apostle, the unlettered prophet whom they shall find described in the Torah that is with them, and [later on] in the Gospel: [the Prophet] who will enjoin upon them the doing of what is right and forbid them the doing of what is wrong, and make lawful to them the good things of life and forbid them the bad things, and lift from them their burdens and the shackles that were upon them [aforetime.]” (Qur’ān 29:48) “And none could knowingly reject Our messages unless it be such as would deny [an obvious] truth: for, [O Muhammad,] thou hast never been able to recite any divine writ ere this one [was revealed], nor didst thou ever transcribe one with thine own hand - or else, they who try to disprove the truth [of thy revelation] might indeed have had cause to doubt it.” (Qur’ān 29:47-48)

The Meaning of `Ummi Allah said, وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ (And there are among them Ummyyun people) meaning, among the People of the Book, as Mujahid stated. Ummyyun, is plural for Ummi, that is, a person who does not write, as Abu Al-`Aliyah, Ar-Rabi`, Qatadah, Ibrahim An-Nakha`i and others said. This meaning is clarified by Allah's statement, لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ الْكِتَـبَ (Who know not the Book) meaning, are they not aware of what is in it. Ummi was one of the descriptions of the Prophet because he was unlettered. For instance, Allah said, وَمَا كُنتَ تَتْلُو مِن قَبْلِهِ مِن كِتَـبٍ وَلاَ تَخُطُّهُ بِيَمِينِكَ إِذاً لاَّرْتَـبَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ (Neither did you (O Muhammad ) read any book before it (this Qur'an) nor did you write any book (whatsoever) with your right hand. In that case, indeed, the followers of falsehood might have doubted) (29:48). Also, the Prophet said, This Hadith stated that Muslims do not need to rely on books, or calculations to decide the timings of their acts of worship. Allah also said, هُوَ الَّذِى بَعَثَ فِى الأُمِّيِّينَ رَسُولاً مِّنْهُمْ (He it is Who sent among the Ummiyyin ones a Messenger (Muhammad ) from among themselves) (62:2).

The Arabic word Ummi in the Quran does not refer to someone illiterate or incapable of reading or writing. In the verse below, God describes an Ummi as someone ignorant of the Scripture and His revelations: “And there are among them Ummiyuna-أُمِّيُّونَ who have no real knowledge of the Scriptures, knowing only their wishful thinking and following only conjecture.” ( Al Quran # 2:78) The verse that follows should also be considered while understanding the meaning of Ummi: "He it is Who raised amongst Al-Ummiyyun a Messenger from among themselves. He recites unto them His Ayaat, purifies them and teaches the knowledge of Al-Kitab and Al-Hikmah even if they remained in manifest error before." ( Al Quran# 62:2) Verse 62:2 makes sense only if you take Ummyina to mean "those who do not know the previous Scriptures," as it is in verse 2:78. It would then mean that God raised a messenger (Prophet Muhammad) among those people who were ignorant of the previous Scriptures; god gave him the knowledge so that he could teach them the Book and purify them. Now let us take a typical translation of verse 62:2 as the one below: "He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism), and teaching them the Book (this Qur'an, Islamic laws and Islamic jurisprudence) and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah: legal ways, orders, acts of worship, etc. of Prophet Muhammad SAW). And verily, they had been before in manifest error. " ( Al Quran 62:2 # Translation-Muhsin Khan & Hilali). The verse is meaningless if you interpret Ummyina to imply someone illiterate ( who does not know reading and writing) because in that case, you would understand that God produced a messenger from among the illiterate people only to teach them the Book. Thus, Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, is referred to in the Quran as Ummi since, before the revelation, he was not familiar with the Scriptures. But after the revelation as stated in the verse below, God provided him the knowledge-the Book: “And He found you lost (ضَالًّ), and He guided you.” ('Dhall'- ضَالًّ = Wandering = Looking for guidance = Straying). (Al Quran # 93:7) The first commandment in the Quran is IQRA, which means study - learn, read, research, etc., which the Prophet had preached. However, it may be inferred that the Prophet wouldn't advocate for something he didn't personally accomplish. EDIT: Some people quote verse 29:48 and claim that here god says that the Prophet could not read or write. Here is the verse: "And you used not to recite any Book before it and nor you used to write anything with your hand, in that case, the followers of falsehood would have doubted." ( Ahmed Reza Khan) God is stating in this verse that the Prophet had not read any books, i.e., any of the earlier scriptures, and that is why God has called him Ummi-not because he was illiterate or unable to read or write. And the phrase "nor you used to write anything with your hand" implies that he has not authored any book. A book, article, or other written work is said to be "authored" if someone wrote it or created it. The Book Prophet preached was the Quran which is god’s word, not the Prophet’s own ideas. The verse addresses the unbeliever's untrue assertion that the Prophet read the Torah and the Bible before writing the Quran. God makes it clear that this is untrue, and that the Quran is, in fact, God's word. That is the verse's crucial message, it is not to provide proof for the Prophet's inability to read or write. The same message is reflected in the following verses, too: "Those who deny the truth say, This is only a forgery of his own invention in which others have helped him. What they say is unjust and false." ( Al Quran # 25:4) "They say, It is just fables of the ancients, which he has had written down. They are dictated to him morning and evening ( Al Quran# 25:5) "Say to them, It has been revealed by Him who knows every secret that is in the heavens and on the earth. Truly, He is most forgiving and most merciful ( Al Quran# 25:6)

In Gabriel Said Reynolds "Emergence of Islam" - says that there were Hanifs, these were people who were either non-trinitarian Christians or Christians outright but Arabs. They were sharing pre-Islamic lectionaries. In "It's All About Muhammad: A Biography of the World's Most Notorious Prophet" by F. W. Burleigh (an admittedly unflattering narrative based upon the traditional Islamic sources) before Mohammed started preaching Islam, he hung out with a Hanif who may have had copies of the Pre-Islamic Koran/Lectionaries by the name of Zaid/of/Zayid (or some such thing). Zayid was unable to convert anyone but perhaps, Mohammed. It was only after Zayid died that Mohammed started to spin his tale of Islam. If Zayid left behind his pre-Islamic Koran/Lectionaries. If Mohammed could read then he had a cheat sheet for spinning his own Koran with a depth of sophistication which it acquired overtime as the accumulation of lectionaries over time. The motive for creating Islam is to relieve Mohammed from being on the bottom of society. I've always assumed that he was a psychopath, and psychopaths are always view human relationships as being vertically oriented (top dog/bottom dog and they must always be the top). But being an orphan without kin in a vendetta society, meaning he was legally at the bottom of society (and could be murdered without being avenged by kin) and being a psychopath meant that he would always be plotting how to reverse his status in society - probably the marraige to a 40 year old widow was massive humiliation for him, which he completely reacted against once she died, and betrothed a 6 year old. As a psychopath he'd have no problem lying unflinchingly about Islam, and would have craved people submitting to being underneath him, which is why he called his religion "submission". At the time in Arabia, status was conferred upon 1-heads of clans/tribes, 2-custodian of idol sects, 3-poets (for disemmination of thought in a mostly illiterate society). Mohammed's invention was to create a new tribe based upon religion with him as the head, and liberal use of poetry (extracted from the text Zayid left behind). I generally think the Standard Islamic Narrative is basically correct as to events, but not as to geography - they moved the locations later.
